WTF is a MGTOW? A Glossary

On this blog, MRA does not stand for Magnetic Resonance Angiography

NOTE: This page is in desperate need of revision and expansion. In the meantime, I suggest you use Rationalwiki’s Manosphere Glossary.

For newcomers to this blog, here’s a handy guide to some of the strange acronyms and lingo you’ll encounter here and in the “manosphere” in general. (For a definition of that term, see below.) I will update this entry periodically as needed.

First, the acronyms you’ll see most often here:

MRA: Men’s Rights Activist
MRM: Men’s Rights Movement

MGTOW: Men Going Their Own Way MGHOW: Man Going His Own Way.

Ok, so what do those terms mean?

MRM: The Men’s Rights Movement: A loosely defined, but largely retrograde, collection of activists and internet talkers who fight for what they see as “men’s rights.” Unlike the original Men’s Movement, which was inspired by and heavily influenced by feminism, the self-described Men’s Rights Movement is largely a reactionary movement; with few exceptions, Men’s Rights Activists (or MRAs) are pretty rabidly antifeminist, and many are frankly and sometimes proudly misogynistic. Those who oppose the MRM are generally not against men’s rights per se; they are opposed to those who’ve turned those two words into a synonym for some pretty backwards notions.

MGTOW: Men Going Their Own Way: As the name suggests, MGTOW is a lot like lesbian separatism, but for straight dudes. MGTOW often talk vaguely about seeking “independence” from western and/or consumer culture, and a few MGTOW try to live that sort of zen existence. But most of those who embrace the term have a deep hostility towards and/or profound distrust of feminists and women in general. Many MGTOW refuse to date “western women” and some try to avoid women altogether.  I think the Man Going His Own Way acronym MGHOW adds another layer of confusion to an already awkward acronym, so I use MGTOWer instead.

Some other terms and acronyms you’ll run across here:

Anglosphere: Countries in which English is the primary language, or, more narrowly, those countries that used to be British colonies. They are full of evil Western Women (see below).

Incel: Involuntarily Celibate. A term, and identity, adopted by some dateless guys (as well as some women, but it’s the men we’ll focus on here). While there is nothing shameful about being dateless, or a virgin, or having a really long dry spell sexually — most of us have been there at some point — the term “involuntarily celibate” seems to suggest that the world owes incels sex, and that women who turn down incel men for dates or sex are somehow oppressing them. For those (male, straight) incels who are genuinely socially awkward or phobic, this can be a self-defeating stance that can lead to bitterness towards women. And often does.

Mangina: Derogatory term used by MRAs, MGTOW, etc. to describe guys who disagree with them — e.g., me. You can figure out the various connotations of this term yourself.

The Manosphere: The loose collection of blogs, message boards, and other sites run by and/or read by MRAs, MGTOW, and assorted friendly Pick-up Artists. The primary source of material for this blog.

NAWALT: Not All Women Are Like That. Dudes in the manosphere make so many ridiculous and untrue generalizations about women that they’ve come up with their own little acronym to describe the most common reaction to their nonsense: “not all women are like that.” Remarkably, many seem to think that making a reference to NAWALT is actually some sort of clever rebuttal of their critics.

PUA: Pick-up Artist. PUAs are obsessed with mastering what they see as the ultimate set of techniques and attitudes — known as “Game” — that will enable them to quickly seduce almost any woman they want. There is a vast literature on “game” online, though PUA (insofar as it is not complete bullshit) is at its essence simply a male version of the age-old ploy of “playing hard to get.”

Western Women: Also known as WW. Evil harpies, at least according to many in the manosphere. Contrasted with “foreign women,” a term that (in the manosphere, at least) sometimes refers to all women outside the Anglosphere, but often refers to a subset of these women from poor and/or Eastern countries, mostly Asian, who are regarded as more pliable and thus more desirable to haters of “Ameriskanks” and other WW.

Sorry if I sounded like I was complaining about the comment being deleted. I wasn’t. I was more musing about one of my character flaws. I just can’t stand missing anything. I’m sure getting rid of it was the right call.

Nah, WWTH. I don’t think you were complaining. I understand how you feel, I get that way when I miss some trolls too.

Don’t worry, WWTH, I didn’t read it as a complaint. There is a question with these things of whether it’s better to let it stand and show how horrible the troll in question is, but I made that call this time ‘cos it was gross, and I wondered if it would be triggering for some people coming in and seeingn it. Yeah, I know this isn’t a safe space and we can expect dreadful shit (damn you, Steele, you made the word VILE almost unusable here), but sometimes … blech.

Good news: The Dark Lord has exercised the mighty powers of ferretcatdom and banned the troll.

He went off about how we are apparently “just as bad as MTGOWs”, and then started spouting some really graphic sex stuff about how most of the sex he gets is from approaching women on the street (he referred to them as “bitches”), and how they love his “respect” and then went on to say they love it when he has sex with them in graphic terms.

Ugh. File under “Never happened, because if it did, it sure as hell wasn’t consensual”. Because neither I nor any woman I’ve ever known has gone out with a man who approached us at random on the street, much less dispensed sex to him for his “respect”. All of us have quite functional creepdars and don’t need it mansplained away from us, thankyouverymuch.

But yeah, his very first paragraph was a dead giveaway. Anyone who thinks that MGTOWs have a lick of sense when they get pissy over a video clearly showing street harassment in its pseudo-polite form is bound to be on the wrong side of the issue, even when he goes on to seemingly agree with you in the next sentence. Sexism and hypocrisy both stink from a mile away, just like harassers…

Maybe he is talking about the way he treats prostituted women.

More than likely, thebewilderness.

Assuming he isn’t just having a ragewank about what he’d like to do, of course.

I love how fucking delicate these bros’ feels are. They say a bunch of gross shit that people disagree with vehemently, people say so and then “How DARE you call me a troll! That is VERY offensive!” You’re not allowed to have an opinion about their conduct but when they piss on your rug and you tell them to clean it up they LOSE THEIR SHIT. Zero insight.

Makes you wonder how they manage with the actual frustrations of life, day to day.

Oh, wait, if they’re around other men, they know better than to try that shit, because they might actually have to pay a price.

Speaking of the harassment stuff, I just remembered that this guy started an AWESOME hashtag called #DudesGreetingDudes in the wake of that video, and it made me laugh so hard and smile so much.

Wow! Glad I went to bed when I did, and missed the rapey bits. Also, ashamed that I tried to give d00d the benefit of the doubt.

There is such a thing as vibes? Next dudes are going to start claiming that they could see how much we wanted to bone them because our auras were red with green stripes or some shit like that.

grumpyoldnurse

Casandrakitty – I thought they already did that? Like, they assume all HB10’s are DTF, no matter what they say or do. Also, the rest of us should be so grateful for any male attention that we should get DTF when they deign to acknowledge us? (since they seem to think feeeemales are NPC’s this actually makes a certain sick sense)

@grumpyoldnurse

OMG they DO! Females as NPCs is an absolutely brilliant way to sum up their attitude.

Entitlement = thinking you’re the protagonist in the game and everyone else is there to provide you with quests, items and power ups. That’s why they get so pissy about girls in gaming – the girls are supposed to be the computers, so wtf is this shit?

PENDRAGON: MRA’s, & MGTOW’s are not our problem, they are their own problem and have no valid points. There have always been women who are against feminism, cause misery loves company, I came to this site after checking out women against feminism where I came up against a host of MEN and women, but mainly MEN, it’s just the same old shit, different day. I would never take responsibility for you. I don’t even know your language!

Obviously biased. A small percentage of these guys may have entitlement issues; but all of them are fighting against definite female entitlement issues. Capiche? Your atemp to downplay the movement is transparent, unobjective and not very usefull apart from defining the acronyms themselves.

MGTOW are like a reverse Turing test: when they post, it’s impossible to tell if they’re real people or just bots spewing a random assortment of talking points.

“Female entitlement! You are biased! [Misspelled word]!” Convincing, right?

It’s really telling that attempts to get female equality are seen as us having entitlement issues.

We know they’re not spambots because the occasional one of those David lets through is more interesting.
