NOTE: This page is in desperate need of revision and expansion. In the meantime, I suggest you use Rationalwiki’s Manosphere Glossary.
For newcomers to this blog, here’s a handy guide to some of the strange acronyms and lingo you’ll encounter here and in the “manosphere” in general. (For a definition of that term, see below.) I will update this entry periodically as needed.
First, the acronyms you’ll see most often here:
MRA: Men’s Rights Activist
MRM: Men’s Rights Movement
MGTOW: Men Going Their Own Way MGHOW: Man Going His Own Way.
Ok, so what do those terms mean?
MRM: The Men’s Rights Movement: A loosely defined, but largely retrograde, collection of activists and internet talkers who fight for what they see as “men’s rights.” Unlike the original Men’s Movement, which was inspired by and heavily influenced by feminism, the self-described Men’s Rights Movement is largely a reactionary movement; with few exceptions, Men’s Rights Activists (or MRAs) are pretty rabidly antifeminist, and many are frankly and sometimes proudly misogynistic. Those who oppose the MRM are generally not against men’s rights per se; they are opposed to those who’ve turned those two words into a synonym for some pretty backwards notions.
MGTOW: Men Going Their Own Way: As the name suggests, MGTOW is a lot like lesbian separatism, but for straight dudes. MGTOW often talk vaguely about seeking “independence” from western and/or consumer culture, and a few MGTOW try to live that sort of zen existence. But most of those who embrace the term have a deep hostility towards and/or profound distrust of feminists and women in general. Many MGTOW refuse to date “western women” and some try to avoid women altogether. I think the Man Going His Own Way acronym MGHOW adds another layer of confusion to an already awkward acronym, so I use MGTOWer instead.
Some other terms and acronyms you’ll run across here:
Anglosphere: Countries in which English is the primary language, or, more narrowly, those countries that used to be British colonies. They are full of evil Western Women (see below).
Incel: Involuntarily Celibate. A term, and identity, adopted by some dateless guys (as well as some women, but it’s the men we’ll focus on here). While there is nothing shameful about being dateless, or a virgin, or having a really long dry spell sexually — most of us have been there at some point — the term “involuntarily celibate” seems to suggest that the world owes incels sex, and that women who turn down incel men for dates or sex are somehow oppressing them. For those (male, straight) incels who are genuinely socially awkward or phobic, this can be a self-defeating stance that can lead to bitterness towards women. And often does.
Mangina: Derogatory term used by MRAs, MGTOW, etc. to describe guys who disagree with them — e.g., me. You can figure out the various connotations of this term yourself.
The Manosphere: The loose collection of blogs, message boards, and other sites run by and/or read by MRAs, MGTOW, and assorted friendly Pick-up Artists. The primary source of material for this blog.
NAWALT: Not All Women Are Like That. Dudes in the manosphere make so many ridiculous and untrue generalizations about women that they’ve come up with their own little acronym to describe the most common reaction to their nonsense: “not all women are like that.” Remarkably, many seem to think that making a reference to NAWALT is actually some sort of clever rebuttal of their critics.
PUA: Pick-up Artist. PUAs are obsessed with mastering what they see as the ultimate set of techniques and attitudes — known as “Game” — that will enable them to quickly seduce almost any woman they want. There is a vast literature on “game” online, though PUA (insofar as it is not complete bullshit) is at its essence simply a male version of the age-old ploy of “playing hard to get.”
Western Women: Also known as WW. Evil harpies, at least according to many in the manosphere. Contrasted with “foreign women,” a term that (in the manosphere, at least) sometimes refers to all women outside the Anglosphere, but often refers to a subset of these women from poor and/or Eastern countries, mostly Asian, who are regarded as more pliable and thus more desirable to haters of “Ameriskanks” and other WW.
No way, Conservapedia is hilarious! It’s like the platonic ideal of what happens if you get the world’s most out-of-touch conservatives all together in one place. Reading about the constant infighting and blocking that lead to the whole thing being written by five or six people, and the incredibly dedicated trolls who actually worked themselves all the way into that inner circle to vandalize it…it’s a thing of beauty. It’s like a Reddit Island that actually exists.
*lights cigarette, waves it in Fedora’s direction* trying to smoke out the straw feminists, that’s all.
Aaliyah, you made me twitch! How in the world can matrix math have a liberal bias?! It’s pure numbers! I mean, there aren’t even X or Y or Z or + or = (ok, negative numbers // subtraction does get – )
@TBF
Um, pretty much all feminists would be just fine with a boy reading poetry, so I don’t know who you’re arguing against.
@Argenti – “How in the world can matrix math have a liberal bias?! ”
Because of the Blue Pill. Obviously.
I can only think of one person who doubted boys’ equal ability to read poetry…
Ah, that was a fun thread, batting around Dr
FrahnkensteenPell.Wasn’t that the good doctor Pell?
Utterly tangentially, if there’s an EA wiki, I need to know! (I was going to make a joke about Pell being Stockhill but I have no link to explain it!)
Kitteh — of course, silly me.
Dafuq people? http://emilieautumn.wikia.com/wiki/Emilie_Autumn_Wiki
That’s it?! I may need to learn how to wiki, this is pathetic.
I think I’ve figured out the problem – our troll friend’s hat is haunted by the spirits of Andrea StrawDworkin and Mary HatesPoetryDaly. What he needs is an exorcist.
Not black, but this seems a likely portrait of trolly:

His new name is The Faded, Somewhat Moth-Eaten Hat. Seems appropriate.

Um, I can’t prove it or anything, but one of my first intros into running my HS’s GSA was in 11th grade when I sat in on the principal’s and GSA’s president’s meeting on that Day of Truth idiocy. Granted, our fools called it Day of Loudness and were just generally bigots, but yeah, that was 2002 (we were offended suspending them under hate speech rules, prez said not to do it, that would just give them more fuel, they got 3 days because they were slamming their stickers on people and that one is a mandatory suspension, no slapping people!)
Also, the trans* series is, so far, excellent. Spare on everything besides transsexuals, GRS, medical issues with transition and 101 stuff, but what is there is “these myths are wrong” and proper 101 stuff, like — http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Cisgender
Now, I need to steel(e) my nerves for the article on Brennan.
Faded, Somewhat Moth-Eaten and Sweaty.
Ewww.
@ Aai
Yes. Strangely many feminists would be OK with this- verbally. Yet they generally oppose single sex education or any forum by which men get together and discuss such things. All self expression is mistaken for patriarchy. The result? Silent men and boys who kill themselves far too often.
whut
I think tatty hat’s been snorting far too many mothballs.
Well… yes? I mean. If you are arguing for a state of affairs that imply that gender and sex differences are less crucial to a persons development than their personality, you would, in fact, argue against single sex education.
You see, if you… enforce single sex education, you could (not are, not will, could) be indicating or inferring, implying or stating out right that you are doing this because this sex is better than that sex, or needs to study alone to not get distracted or needs special things as opposed to the other, different sexes.
So… that would be why. There’s nothing inherently wrong with single sex education, as such, but it often side steps into less “focus on this” and more “since those other sexes are so icky / stupid / distracting / foolish / dumb / silly, we will now be studying alone. Forever. And this also avoids any of that nasty-wasty birds-and-bees stuff!”.
Seriously, what? I don’t even understand where you’re coming from here.
Of course if feminists did try to stop men from getting together to discuss “such things”, you’d have a point. But that’s not even the same thing. This is so confusing.
Tatty mothball hat thinks “MRAs saying women should be raped and beaten” or “misogynists generally posting pro-rape, pro-violence ‘jokes'” are the same as “men talking about real life concerns amongst themselves”. Also, freeze peach.
Hey Black Hat. How’s being a racist and a misogynist working for you? Making a lot of racist, misogynistic friends? Do you all sit around on a Saturday, telling each other what Asian women are like and the various ways they please your boners?
Could you do me a quick favour and fuck off forever?
Boys can’t read poetry?
So just exactly who was it writing poetry about their experiences in WWI? Secret male impersonators, or unmanly men, or has there been some massive genetic change in the male of our species in just a handful of generations?
I’m perfectly willing to entertain a discussion about the anti-intellectualism of modern English speaking countries – where the “too cool for school” attitude is either laughed off or actively encouraged, to the detriment of both boys and girls. But this is not just about poetry, it discourages proper attention to maths and science and every other non-sporting, non-entertainment activity.
See, I see the problem you have there, Black-Hat.
You’re all ‘boys need to learn to be sensitive and appreciate poetry without being held down by toxic roles.’
Yes, we say!
So give me a female-free place to get it, you say!
Dead silence.
Your ignorance of what happens in real-world male-only educational institutions is staggering. Do you not understand how those were used as tools to create and instill those toxic roles?
LEARN TO HISTORY.
@mildlymagnificent: Flander’s Field? This must be one of those sissy poems about flowers. It has a field, right?
Howard: “do you not understand” is the question about Motheaten Haberdassery’s whole existence, and the answer only needs the first two words reversed. Wilful cluenessness in troll form.
@ Howard
I am fortunate to have spent some of my childhood in a single sex school and fortunate to have met many men who have spent longer. Of course it is quite easy to imagine male only schools that are worse than what e have now- but I have heard more good than bad.
@ Fib
You are an example of the problem. Yes. I am advocating this from a male perspective but benefiting boys does not disadvantage girls except in a relative sense. It may even benefit them too.
