NOTE: This page is in desperate need of revision and expansion. In the meantime, I suggest you use Rationalwiki’s Manosphere Glossary.
For newcomers to this blog, here’s a handy guide to some of the strange acronyms and lingo you’ll encounter here and in the “manosphere” in general. (For a definition of that term, see below.) I will update this entry periodically as needed.
First, the acronyms you’ll see most often here:
MRA: Men’s Rights Activist
MRM: Men’s Rights Movement
MGTOW: Men Going Their Own Way MGHOW: Man Going His Own Way.
Ok, so what do those terms mean?
MRM: The Men’s Rights Movement: A loosely defined, but largely retrograde, collection of activists and internet talkers who fight for what they see as “men’s rights.” Unlike the original Men’s Movement, which was inspired by and heavily influenced by feminism, the self-described Men’s Rights Movement is largely a reactionary movement; with few exceptions, Men’s Rights Activists (or MRAs) are pretty rabidly antifeminist, and many are frankly and sometimes proudly misogynistic. Those who oppose the MRM are generally not against men’s rights per se; they are opposed to those who’ve turned those two words into a synonym for some pretty backwards notions.
MGTOW: Men Going Their Own Way: As the name suggests, MGTOW is a lot like lesbian separatism, but for straight dudes. MGTOW often talk vaguely about seeking “independence” from western and/or consumer culture, and a few MGTOW try to live that sort of zen existence. But most of those who embrace the term have a deep hostility towards and/or profound distrust of feminists and women in general. Many MGTOW refuse to date “western women” and some try to avoid women altogether. I think the Man Going His Own Way acronym MGHOW adds another layer of confusion to an already awkward acronym, so I use MGTOWer instead.
Some other terms and acronyms you’ll run across here:
Anglosphere: Countries in which English is the primary language, or, more narrowly, those countries that used to be British colonies. They are full of evil Western Women (see below).
Incel: Involuntarily Celibate. A term, and identity, adopted by some dateless guys (as well as some women, but it’s the men we’ll focus on here). While there is nothing shameful about being dateless, or a virgin, or having a really long dry spell sexually — most of us have been there at some point — the term “involuntarily celibate” seems to suggest that the world owes incels sex, and that women who turn down incel men for dates or sex are somehow oppressing them. For those (male, straight) incels who are genuinely socially awkward or phobic, this can be a self-defeating stance that can lead to bitterness towards women. And often does.
Mangina: Derogatory term used by MRAs, MGTOW, etc. to describe guys who disagree with them — e.g., me. You can figure out the various connotations of this term yourself.
The Manosphere: The loose collection of blogs, message boards, and other sites run by and/or read by MRAs, MGTOW, and assorted friendly Pick-up Artists. The primary source of material for this blog.
NAWALT: Not All Women Are Like That. Dudes in the manosphere make so many ridiculous and untrue generalizations about women that they’ve come up with their own little acronym to describe the most common reaction to their nonsense: “not all women are like that.” Remarkably, many seem to think that making a reference to NAWALT is actually some sort of clever rebuttal of their critics.
PUA: Pick-up Artist. PUAs are obsessed with mastering what they see as the ultimate set of techniques and attitudes — known as “Game” — that will enable them to quickly seduce almost any woman they want. There is a vast literature on “game” online, though PUA (insofar as it is not complete bullshit) is at its essence simply a male version of the age-old ploy of “playing hard to get.”
Western Women: Also known as WW. Evil harpies, at least according to many in the manosphere. Contrasted with “foreign women,” a term that (in the manosphere, at least) sometimes refers to all women outside the Anglosphere, but often refers to a subset of these women from poor and/or Eastern countries, mostly Asian, who are regarded as more pliable and thus more desirable to haters of “Ameriskanks” and other WW.
Feeling hurt and angry is legitimate. Wishing violence and sexual assault on people and continually treating half the population as subhuman is never legitimate. On top of which – a lot of the people who comment here have had bad experiences (abusive relationships, sexual assaults, etc) and yet they say nothing even remotely equivalent to the kinds of things David quotes.
Dude, yes it is legitimate to feel hurt over a bad experience, although there may or may not also be anger. Have you read the posts that David is making to see what we are mocking? There is a rather large difference between “my [insert female relationship noun here] did [negative thing] to me” and many of the comments on David’s post here: http://manboobz.com/2013/01/28/the-mens-rights-subreddit-a-net-exporter-of-hate/
There’s just one ting I don’t get, when sites like Radfem hub post similar stuff to this no one really has this level of a reaction Also what is the problem with a group tht deals with men’s issues, now I realize its unfair to blame feminist for everything and tht some MRA’s are misogynists no doubt but there are hates on both sides and there are some things feminists have pushed for tht really are hurting men. Thts just my opinion, if where gonna have a feminist group it only seems fair to have a men’s group too.
Dammit, more thread necroing.
Nick, have you seen this site? We’re mocking misogyny. I think the long-standing offer on Manboobz is that anyone, at any time, can put up the work of an MRA who isn’t a misogynist. Thus far, nobody has succeeded.
That MRAs and misogyny have so much in common on this site is how it goes. Which you’d know if you’d actually read any of the entries instead of necroing this ancient thread.
Is he leaving the a out of that as a political statement? It seems intentional.
Because RadFemHub isn’t the mainstream of feminism, and the sites we talk about are the mainstream of the MRM/MGTOW movement.
Tell you what… if you say (as ya’ do), that we are only dealing with, “some” MRM and ignoring the rest, why don’t you point us to the ones you think are reasonable, non-misogynist.
Take yer time, we’ll wait.
Thanks for the incel definition. Backs up what I gathered from comments in other articles ^_^
Not another RadFemHub troll! Do we have a Bingo square for those?
Nick, I’m the minority of this website. Its usually my opinion versus everyone elses.
Lurk a bit. See who sways you.
Wait, let us get links to these mythical Radfem Hub screeds!
Yeah. But no. Actually, if you’ll remember, when sites like RadFebHub posted similar stuff, A Voice for Men doxxed the people who posted the stuff and added their personal information to their stupid-ass Register Her site.
Nick has just discovered that feminists are people and even go around acting like people and he is so shocked that he could think of nothing better to do with this stunning discovery than to come and share the women do it tooooo lament with us. Criminy!
By the bye, Rad Fem Hub no longer exists. I don’t know who the MRAs will go after next but if you know anyone with a feminist blog you might want to warn them never ever ever to comment on an MRA blog. They will track you down and dox you.
Nick, I’m the minority of this website. Its usually my opinion versus everyone elses.
Unless you count D/s, Zarat (where is he lately?), NWO, DKM, Preggo-Punchout, Eurosabra, Ruby, Brz, Emmo the Emo, driversuz, sunshine mary, and all driveby commenters like Chuck Emcee, who show up to address the topics in question.
That’s without the handful (Mr. vArpoLe, Butthorn Steele, Tom Martin, Brandon) who got themselves banned.
Other than them, you are the lone stalwart in opposition.
RE: pecunium
Don’t forget Fatrelle! And I thought Antz got banned? I can’t recall…
RE: pecunium
Also, saying he’s a minority is a bit disingenuous. Not like we don’t have various OTHER minorities here. And there isn’t much pride in saying, “I’m the minority, in that I hate football on this football website.”
LBT: He is in several minorities here, most of the people who take part are reasoned, rational, persuadable. They admit to mistakes, care about people in general and care enough to get their facts straight.
Yeah, it’s Diogenes against the world, taking a stance for the clueless, the selfish, and the smug. Way to be, bro.
I am not surprised that Rad Fem Hub no longer exists. So, MRAs, where are these mythical screeds against men that are as intense as the ones you write about women?
But Bostonian…. IT DID EXIST! Therefore all the things they say are justified.
And monkeys fly out my ass on alternate Tuesdays. (this affects when I can engage in airline travel, as the Air Marshals get very upset with flying monkeys in the cabin).
Actually, it being gone is worse, in a way, because now they can claim anything they want about what it did say.
Nothing, just, most MRAs tend to see the “issues” as women sorta sometimes now being treated like people and the “solutions” they tend to give to those issues are generally more misogyny and stricter enforcement of patriarchal gender roles.
The worst stuff from RadFemHub that I saw was a) the idea that men are somehow inherently predisposed to violence and b) the proposition that women should stop having male babies.
I’ve only seen similar notions espoused by feminists a mere handful of times. In the meantime, we see similarly hateful shit from MRAs, PUAs, MGTOWs, and “red pill” types all the freaking time.
@Tulgey Logger
In the case of a, we’ve seen exactly the same thing from the MRM. (It is actually a rather mainstream idea.)
The one time I read it, the comments were mostly bafflement and frustration that more women didn’t just avoid men altogether, with one or two commenters thinking it was all about sex. Crude, but nothing like the ridiculous terms Arks and the if-only-they-would MGTOW mob come up with for women’s bodies.
