Open thread for yelling about Kavanaugh and this dark day for democracy

Thanks for nothing, Susan Collins!

By David Futrelle

What a fucking dark day for women, for survivors, for everyone who cares about democracy.

Here’s a thread for venting, lamenting, planning for November and beyond. No trolls.

The Senate is about to vote! CALL NOW to defend Obamacare!

Mitch McConnell, haunted by the spirits of those who will literally die if he gets this bill through

By David Futrelle

Hey everyone, I’m still lost in headache-land (see my last post for details) but this is REALLY REALLY important for all WHTM readers in the US.

#ResistTrump: Call about Russia! Call about Gorsuch! Call about Health Care!

Ugh. This guy again.

Ok, folks, let’s get calling! Three big issues to push on this week.

Old-school speakerphone

Your mission today? More calls!

I know we’re all sick of making calls, but they make a difference. Republican members of congress are feeling besieged, and Democrats are standing up to Trump more directly because of pressure from their base. That is, from us.

There are a lot of things to call about. Here are a couple of ideas:

#ResistTrump today by urging congress to treat him like a failed president

Mike Pence, his family, and possibly some demons walk past nearly empty bleachers in the inauguration parade

Build on the momentum of this weekend’s massive protests by calling your members of congress with a blunt message: Trump’s behavior in the first several days of his presidency — from his belligerent inauguration speech to his petty and dishonest squabbling about crowd sizes — indicate that he is dangerously unfit and temperamentally unsuited to be president.

#ResistTrump today by calling your senators about Rick Perry, Steven Mnuchin, and Scott Pruitt

Rick Perry: Has no idea what he’s doing

Sometimes it’s hard not to think that Unpresident-Elect Trump’s cabinet picks aren’t all an elaborate joke, given how utterly unprepared most of them have been, not to mention the hostility so many of them have for the departments they hope to run.

"ethics" #ResistTrump trump

#ResistTrump today by calling your senators about ethics-challenged ACA foe Tom Price

Time to get a second opinion

And the confirmation hearings continue. The biggest priority? Urging senators to block the nomination of Tom Price for Secretary of Health and Human Services.

#ResistTrump today by calling senators about his terrible Education pick Betsy DeVos [UPDATED]

Betsy DeVos: School ruiner?

UPDATE 1/18/17: DeVos’ hearings were an utter fiasco; she made clear she lacks even a basic understanding of education issues. Mother Jones has gathered together videos of her worst moments here; Vox looks at one key issue she evidently knows nothing about. Also, BEARS!

Time to pester your senators again, this time about Donald Trump’s awful pick for Secretary of Education: Betsy DeVos, a billionaire school-privatization fanatic who’s devoted more than two decades to questionable education “reforms” that put more government money into the pockets of private corporations and Christian schools while undermining public schools.

#ResistTrump trump

#ResistTrump today by starting a sustained fightback for the ACA

Escalate the phone war!

The House has now joined the Senate in voting for the legislation that could pave the way for the GOP’s plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare). The GOP says it will have the final repeal bill drafted by January 27th.

In other words, get ready to fight for the ACA as if your life depended on it. Because it literally might.
