We Hunted The Mammoth
Today, a song from 1990: “Can’t Step Twice (On the Same Piece of Water),” by Teacher, a one-hit wonder from London, I believe. An infectious mixture of house and African music, with samples from a 1978 David Carradine kung fu film, The Silent Flute, a.k.a. Circle of Iron. Somehow this all works together beautifully.
So I was scrolling through the Antifeminists subreddit, as one does, and I ran across a post that was just completely baffling.
Gals! Are you looking to date men who get inexplicably angry about black women playing flutes?
Fellas! Are you looking to date women who sound like bad actresses awkwardly reading their lines off of a teleprompter?
A 25-year-old California incel was recently arrested and charged with hate crimes, after he allegedly sprayed women with pepper spray in a series of attacks that he filmed and put on YouTube. With the hate crime “enhancements” on top of his various felony charges, he could face up to 13 years in prison.
So the regulars in the Men’s Rights subreddit are talking about Body Positivity today. Yes, that means they’re talking about fat women (and men). And yes, it is the shitshow you might expect. Except maybe, somehow, worse.
It’s not that complicated. If you want to learn what’s going on in the heads of the regular contributors to the incels.is forum, one of the best (and quickest) ways is to simply read an assortment of comments posted there (or perhaps several of my posts on the subject, all of which quote copiously from the original incel comments).
So I’m working on a bigger piece on a recent report about incels, but in the meantime I found myself a little distracted by a thread on Twitter about harmful “Airport Books” — that is, those non-fiction books usually with one big and possibly very bad idea that are waiting to snare unwary passengers at the airport bookstore.
I learn so many things by reading Reddit on the regular. Here are a few historical insights I picked up on the Antifeminist subreddit today.
The trans panic has reached an alarming stage: transphobes, most notably Fox News’ Tucker Carlson, have escalated their rhetoric and become more obvious about their stochastic terrorism, with Tucker Carlson broadcasting the names and faces of board members of Vanderbilt Hospital, which offers gender affirming care to children. Bill O’Reilly gave the same sort of “publicity” to a prominent abortion doctor years ago; the doctor was murdered by an anti-abortion fanatic.
