We Hunted the Mammoth: The FAQ-ening

Q) A mammoth, huh? What’s this blog about?

A) Misogyny, not mammoths.

Specifically, this blog focuses on what I call the “New Misogyny,” an angry antifeminist backlash that has emerged like a boil on the ass of the internet over the last decade or so. These aren’t your traditional misogynists – the social conservatives and religious fundamentalists who make up much of the far right.

These are guys, mostly, who range in age from their teens to their fifties, who have embraced misogyny as an ideology, as a sort of symbolic solution to the frustrations in their lives – whether financial, social, or sexual.

Some of them identify as Men’s Rights Activists, trying to cast their peculiar struggle against what they see as the excess of feminism and the advantages of women as a civil rights issue of sorts. Alongside those who explicitly label themselves MRAs we find a great number of antifeminist and antiwomen activists we might call Men’s Rights-adjacent – like those in the Skeptic and Atheist subcultures who still haven’t gotten over an offhand remark Skepchick founder Rebecca Watson made about a dude in an elevator a couple of years ago.

Others proclaim themselves Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW), declaring a sort of independence from women – while spending much of their time on message boards talking endlessly about them.

Still others see themselves as Pickup Artists (PUA), or masters of “Game,” espousing elaborate “scientific” theories of male superiority while trading tips on how best to pressure or manipulate drunk women into bed. This misogynistic wing of the PUA subculture has a considerable overlap with a subset of traditionalist and far-right blogs. Many of those in what has come to be called “the manosphere” — hey, don’t blame me, I didn’t come up with that name — don’t simply embrace misogyny; they also proudly embrace “scientific” racism and other bigotries.

Still, while some of the New Misogynists see themselves as conservatives, even “neo-reactionaries,” many identify themselves as libertarians or even as liberals. Theirs is a backlash that frames itself as a step forward.

That said, there are numerous posts here that don’t have anything to do with MRAs or MGTOWers or PUAs or any of their ilk. Sometimes I like to post cat pics.

Q) Ok, but you still haven’t explained the mammoth thing.

A) This is a reference to a quote I once posted from a dude who felt women weren’t sufficiently appreciative of what men had supposedly done for them over the ages. Here’s the quote, in all of its weird glory:

We men built a nice safe world for you all the the coal-mines of death, roads, railroads, bridges and tall office buildings. Its $1,000,000 spent per death of a man on a large dangerous project on average now you can just 9-5 it and call it a day in air-conditioned and heated safety. Forget about the wars we died in and the sacrifices made just ignore history or is it now hersorty? You are accruing the benefits without ever having to pay the price you still don’t have to sign up for the draft and who will protect you? The Sex and the City girls will fight off the North Koreans with their Manolo Blahniks?

Men gave you this modern world now you take it for granted we hunted the mammoth to feed you we died in burning buildings and were gassed in the trenches but that was just for fun right?

How quick and conveniently you forget who made this possible.

We gave you Leonardo da Vinci, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy not to mention countless others, Jonas Salk saved half the world from death and you just piss on it all.

This quote is such an amazing clusterfuck of misogyny, entitlement and unwarranted self-importance – not to mention historical ignorance – that the bit about mammoths became a catchphrase around here, neatly conveying pretty much everything this blog is against. And so I decided to make it the name of the blog.

Q) And who exactly are you?

A) David Futrelle. I’m a freelance writer and blogger living in Evanston, IL, and the guy behind the Confused Cats Against Feminism blog. For more on my illustrious career, see the David Futrelle FAQ.

Q) You’re against the Men’s Rights movement. Are you against men having rights?

A) Of course not. As hundreds of posts on this site show pretty clearly, the so-called Men’s Rights Movement is a hateful, reactionary movement driven largely by misogyny and hatred of feminism. It doesn’t help men. It encourages them to scapegoat women and stew in their own bitterness.

Q) Are you secretly funded by the international feminist conspiracy?

A) No. I’m not funded by any organization. Some readers have very kindly given me donations. You can too, if you wish.

Q) What’s with all the cat pictures?

A) I like cats.

“A) No. Women can say dumb things too. There are women who are misogynistic and/or Men’s Rights Activists. When they say dumb things, I write about them.

Q) Do you hate men?

A) No.”

Um… you indirectly imply that any woman who is a men’s rights activist is bad or something, as if being one is a bad thing. (No, I do not consider myself an activist, but I am certainly for solving the issues of ALL people, not just WOMEN, but MEN too) You also show that you do not support men’s rights, at all. Maybe you don’t think the issues are a big deal or something… and then you wonder why people ask you if you hate men.

If you really think that at least some of the men’s issues they talk about need fixing, then why do you consider it automatically bad to be an activist for them, if you don’t give a shit? There are some stupid, misogynistic men’s rights activists, but there are also ones that are just, um, empathetic to men’s issues as well and give a fuck – men and women. I’m sure that as soon as you see someone call themselves an MRA and talk about being against [legit bad issue here that clearly sucks] you’re all “omg, how dare they!” That’s what’s fucking disgusting, being anti-equal rights.

And a defense that you think everyone supporting men’s rights issues sucks or is somehow sexist doesn’t check out, 1- due to common sense. If you know there are legit men’s issues out there, then why the fuck would you think no one could simply support solving them without being some sort of bigot, asshole, idiot, sexist, or misogynist? SURPRISE*** *someone* does… in fact, multiple someones, and I’ve encountered them.

YOU’RE the sexist here, only caring about one sex’s issues. You are *no better* than the misogynists I’ve come across calling themselves innocently supporting men’s rights. You upset me no less than those assholes. Nasty people can be such emotional vampires, even when they aren’t waving off upsetting things in front of you. But I just had to say something about this and bring MYSELF to it.. such is my sacrifice.

Dear completelylostforwords,

Now, if you knew anything about modern feminism, you would know that it is all about promoting rights for BOTH genders, and demolishing old gender stereotypes. That’s right! News flash: the patriarchy hurts both boys and girls – boys want to be able to do girl things as well! Just look at this:

http://abcnews.go.com/US/boy-friendly-easy-bake-oven-teen-girl-bat/story?id=18003828

Feminism wants boys AND girls to be able to be who they are are without mockery and oppression, regardless of the colour of their skin, their sexual orientation, or their hobbies. But in order to do that, we have to slowly dismantle the social structures and hundreds of years of ingrained prejudices that keep these stereotypes in play, such as the patriarchy. You’ve probably heard that word bandied about, but maybe you think it’s just women blaming men for their problems. Here is what feminists mean when they use the word “patriarchy”:

http://finallyfeminism101.wordpress.com/2007/03/21/faq-isnt-the-patriarchy-just-some-conspiracy-theory-that-blames-all-men-even-decent-men-for-womens-woes/

If you explore this site even a tiny bit, I think you can see for yourself why MRAs suck. They are aggressive, abusive, ignorant, and belligerent. The majority of the people in this movement are men that are bitter about not getting laid, or are terrified that the groups they’ve oppressed for so long are going to get one up on them! Can’t let that happen, so better put ’em down hard! Call ’em whores! Take away their rights to access contraception! Accuse them of lying about rape! Tell them that if they dress a certain way, they must be asking for sexual assault! Accuse any man who identifies as a feminist, or who isn’t getting laid enough, or is trans/queer of being a “mangina”! Rant about women stealing their sperm…what? I mean, WHAT is that…

Google Tom Martin, or look at his comments on here. The guy is a giant idiot.

I could give you more links, but this is really all you need to get started:

http://finallyfeminism101.wordpress.com/

Hopefully you were speaking out of honest ignorance which I have now mitigated, rather than ignorant self-righteous MRA bullshit. Such is MY sacrifice 😛

why do you defend psychotic Swedish women that think murdering men is a reason to dance? I mean when boys tend to report that they have been molested 86% of the time they are not believed. Check with the Children’s rights group of Canada for that stat. Anyway you admit not wanting to persecute false rape/domestic violence accusers even though the real victim is short changed. No I’m not an MRA I just hate lies and liberal hate groups also great job misquoting Warren Farrell I guess violence is okay if women do it. I mean seriously those women got violent.

RE: Jason

I was sexually abused as a boy, and I come from a family where boys were molested. I’m also a feminist. So far, feminists are the ones who haven’t told me I had it coming, that I should’ve enjoyed it, and so on. I’m pretty open about it on this site, and nobody’s mocked me, except trolls who got banned for it.

And Warren Farrell spoke favorably of incest. This was covered ages ago. David even covered the misquoting part of it. Warren Farrell does NOT speak for me.

Also, the police controlled the protesters and let Farrell have his damn talk. They protested, they shouted, they were subdued, and Farrell had his talk.

“nyway you admit not wanting to persecute false rape/domestic violence accusers even though the real victim is short changed.”

So, is persecute instead of prosecute a) an English fail, b) a Freudian slip or c) the real attitude of this gutless little “I’m not an MRA” misogynist?

Fuck off, loser.

I always figured because this is one of the pages people can access from the header bar, and they don’t pay attention to how old it is though.

Despite everything, jason actually offended me though. Asshole, don’t pretend you care so fucking much about boys being sexually abused than defend fucking Warren Farrell. You don’t come in all self-righteous and hypocritical.

*deep breath* Sorry, I don’t know what’s gotten into me. Usually the assholes don’t get to me like that.

No need to apologise at all, LBT. You were more civil than this little creep deserved. I mean, whining about women supposedly not caring about boys being molested, at the same time as whining about them being sooo nasty to an incest abuse apologist?

LBT

It’s just such bullshit. Kittehs, this was before your time; hellkell, you might’ve been there for when Antz pretty much said the MRA had no place for me, because dammit, I wasn’t THEIR kind of man. And the other troll who simply couldn’t decide whether I deserved my rape or not.

Feminism is how I managed to move past it and understand it, and it’s predominantly feminists who haven’t given me crap about it. I haven’t been able to FIND books for men by men about rape. There’s like, one book, and it’s for straight cis men who seem to live lives totally alien to mine.

Go bash feminism when you find me better resources, jason. Or give me better work. Now GTFO.
