In many ways, Kimbrady Carriker seems to be the very model of a modern mass shooter. The suspect in a gun rampage in Philadelphia that left four men and a teen boy dead, Carricker was reportedly carrying an AR-15-style assault rifle and wearing a bulletproof vest. On his now-deleted Facebook account, Vice notes, “he posted repeatedly about his second amendment rights, his pro-gun stance, his support for former president Donald Trump, and his disdain for President Joe Biden.” A Tucker Carlson fan, he also posted ominous passages from scripture, turning them into threats.

A new report from the US Secret Service’s National Threat Assessment Center examines five years of data on mass attacks in public places in the US from 2016-2020. The report, which looked at 173 separate incidents, found that mass attacks are an almost exclusively male sport: 96% of the attackers were male. And a significant number of them were motivated by misogyny.
They didn’t even bother with “thoughts and prayers” this time. In the wake of the latest horrific mass shooting, which took ten lives in a Monterey Park, California dance studio, right-wingers seem almost giddy, doing a sort of victory lap because the suspected killer was not a white man.
When the suspect in the Club Q mass shooting in Colorado Springs claimed, through his lawyers, that he was nonbinary, transphobes could barely contain their glee: No longer could those on the left accuse them of directly or indirectly inspiring the shooting with their hyperbolic transphobic rhetoric. The alleged shooter was trans — one of their own.
Right-wing transphobes aren’t letting a little mass shooting get in the way of their continuing vilification of trans people as “groomers” and “mutilators” of children.
Just before midnight, hours before a scheduled drag brunch to honor the Transgender Day of Remembrance, a gunman opened fire in Club Q, a Colorado Springs LGBTQ club, killing five and wounding two dozen others. The alleged shooter, armed with an AR-15-style gun and wearing body armor, was reportedly tackled and subdued by bar patrons before he could kill more.
Luis Ramirez has a new theory about school shootings: they’re caused by a lack of testosterone. The freelance journalist, writing in the Tucker-Carlson-founded Daily Caller, offers a confused and confusing theory of mass shootings as the result not of toxic masculinity or the easy availability of guns but of wimpy, testosterone-starved kids gone wrong. “[T]here seems to be a correlation between the diminishing of testosterone volumes,” he writes, “and rise in mass shootings.”
