Friday Afternoon Video: “What it’s like watching The Sarkeesian Effect”

Ran across this on YouTube, from someone called ScAgCoWbOy. I know nothing about them, but this video pretty much nails the experience of sitting through all 2 1/2 hours of The Sarkeesian Effect — probably the longest 2 1/2 hours you’ll ever endure. The sleepy dog, needless to say, is not in the original.

By the time the “film” got to this point — this is from Jordan Owen’s weird Ayn-Randy monologue, around 2 hours in — I was so completely zoned out I couldn’t really appreciate the ridiculousness of what he was saying. Or the loopy graphics.

Also note the completely random (and way too loud) music. It’s like that all the way through this piece of crap.

17 completely wrong things about filmmaking I learned from The Sarkeesian Effect, the worst documentary ever made

“They’re called tropes in games or something like that?”

— Brad Wardell, Game developer and Anita Sarkeesian expert

The Sarkeesian Effect, which premiered as a $3.99 “on demand” video on Vimeo yesterday, and which I forced myself to watch all two and a half hours of, is not so much a “documentary” as an object lesson in why it’s never a good idea to hand over tens of thousands of dollars to hateful, incompetent ideologues barely capable of making mediocre YouTube videos and expect them to produce a documentary that looks even vaguely professional.

The Sarkeesian Effect is Out! Check Out This Bootleg Copy I Got, For Free

Ok, I lied about the bootleg copy. And yes, I just recycled a joke I made on Twitter.

But The Sarkeesian Effect really is out! (Just my luck, it came out while I was napping. I have a very odd schedule, ok?)

You can go pay $3.99 to watch it on Vimeo, or you can wait for my review. It may take a while, because the “film” is 2 1/2 hours long, and I type slowly.

There’s No Stealing a Red Car … or Violence Against Women: More Bizarre Memes from AVFM

Take that, the literally zero people who have ever made this argument!
Take that, the literally zero people who have ever made this argument!

So it turns out that Toronto poster promoting A Voice for Men (by snottily taking down to women) wasn’t actually an official AVFM production. Or at least it probably wasn’t.

Even the folks at AVFM are a little unsure on that point. But one thing is clear: AVFM thinks the poster is AWESOME!

Here’s what amounts to an official statement on the subject, from AVFM’s Facebook page

Men’s Rights Activists still angry that they’re considered a joke, vow to do nothing to change this

Oh, Colorado, you make me sad. Can't you just search for Nickelback lyrics like normal people?
Oh, Colorado, you make me sad. Can’t you just search for Nickelback lyrics like normal people?

So the fellas on the Men’s Rights subreddit are kicking up a shine about a post one of them found on the internet that treats them like the joke that they are.

You see, a blogger on real estate site Estately.com decided, out of sheer boredom, I imagine, to assemble a list of Each State’s Most Embarrassing Google Searches.

As you can see from the map above, the searches range from terrible music (for some reason, Maine residents feel a need to track down Nickelback lyrics) to assorted penis-size related concerns.

In Colorado, the search term that made Estately’s Ryan Nickum giggle the most was “Men’s Rights.”

In deleted post, AVFM’s Paul Elam threatens to spread dirt on journalists “like gonorrhea in a whorehouse.”

So in my last post, I noted that A Voice for Men’s excitable founder Paul Elam was threatening to dig into the lives of alleged “yellow journalists” he thinks have libelled him in an effort to discover the alleged “skeletons in [their] closet[s].”

Unfortunately, he’d deleted the post in which he gave the details of this new, er, initiative, so I couldn’t give more details.

But now one helpful We Hunted the Mammoth reader, Alice Sanguinaria, has dug up the Google cache of his original post, and has conveniently saved an archived version of it.

So here are some highlights of that post — that is, some of the things that Elam decided he probably shouldn’t actually be saying in public.

So earlier today, A Voice for Men’s head honcho, the neither lovely nor talented Paul Elam, threatened “yellow journalists” who allegedly lie about his so-called Men’s Human Rights Movement with, well, something pretty dire-sounding. I just can’t tell you exactly what.

[UPDATE: An archived version of Elam’s deleted post has been found; see here for a post on what it contains.]

In an angry and ungrammatical tweet (archived here), Elam warned:

This popcorn is delicious indeed.

Last night was the grand premiere of The Sarkeesian Effect (Team Jordan Owen Edition), and the response from critics and audience members alike has been overwhelming!

That video of crickets has gotten more than 3,344,825 views on Youtube. That’s 371,647 times the number of people who apparently showed up at the Sarkeesian Effect premiere/#GamerGate Meetup at the Landmark Midtown Art Cinema in Atlanta last night.

Bill Cosby’s deposition shows he “loves beautiful women, and they love him right back,” explains A Voice for Men writer

This is a real thing that exists
This is a real thing that exists

Earlier this month, A Voice for Men published a post by its founder, the reliably odious Paul Elam, with the lovely title

Bill Cosby’s victims? Or just a bunch of drug whoring star fuckers?

In it, Elam suggested that Cosby’s 46 (so far) accusers were nothing “a bunch of greedy women who commoditized their bodies like groupies” in order to get drugs from the comedian, indulging in an age-old transactional sort of sex that Elam referred to, with his customary delicacy, as “gash for stash.”

I didn’t think AVFM’s ongoing, er, coverage of Cosby could get any more ludicrous than that. Then yesterday a post by Jonathan David Farley appeared on the site with the headline:

Men’s Rights jackass Paul Elam: Cosby’s accusers “just a bunch of drug whoring [oh it gets worse]”

Two of Bill Cosby's accusers, with attorney Gloria Allred
Two of Bill Cosby’s accusers, with attorney Gloria Allred

Apparently looking to score clicks from controversy, Men’s Rights douchebag-in-chief Paul Elam has resorted to an old tactic of his: acting like the world’s biggest asshole. This time he’s attempting to gin up traffic on the backs of Bill Cosby’s 40-plus accusers.

In a post on A Voice for Men yesterday that is repugnant even by his standards, Elam asks if the women who say Cosby drugged and raped them are really victims, or “just a bunch of drug whoring star fuckers?”
