Deep Dream Makes These Awesomely Ridiculous Vintage Men’s Magazine Covers Even More Awesomely Ridiculous

DogBear and friends face off against DogManTorso
DogBear and friends face off against DogManTorso

I‘ve long been obsessed with the bizarrely over-the-top cover art for 1950s men’s “adventure” magazines, in which muscular, often shirtless men face off against an assortment of unlikely animal enemies — from armies of “giant turtles” to squads of flying squirrels. (You can find an assortment of notable covers here.)

More recently, I’ve become obsessed with Google’s Deep Dream software, which can turn any picture you toss at it into a creepy acid nightmare filled with strange Dogslug creatures and a strange surplus of eyes.

And now that I’ve found a handy web interface for the Deep Dream software, I decided to combine these two obsessions into one. The results were, well, interesting.

Cat videos are some sort of magic elixir, new study allegedly not conducted by cats finds

Confirming what most We Hunted the Mammoth readers have suspected for years, a new study from Indiana University reports that watching cat videos on the internet makes you feel good.

According to a press release from Indiana University about the study:

MRAsterpiece Theater presents the most decadent review of Mad Max: Fury Road since the fall of Rome

Good news everyone! No, I mean actual good news: The MRAsterpiece Theater duo have started making videos! Here’s Professor Skull’s darkly enlightened review of Mad Max: Fury Road.

It kind of kills me that on a technical level this video looks and sounds more professional than anything the real-life Sarkeesian Effect duo of Davis Aurini and Jordan Owen have managed to produce thus far.

But there are two glaring omissions from this little masterpiece: No skull, and no pizza box in the background. This is a very serious breach of ethics, I think.

Fury and Furiouser: The boycott of Mad Max Fury Road is the biggest joke on the internet; manbabies declare victory

Rebel Wilson as Fat Amy: An even greater threat to manly men than Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road?
Rebel Wilson as Fat Amy: An even greater threat to manly men than Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road?

So my post on Aaron Clarey’s Return of Kings call for a boycott of Mad Max: Fury Road went a bit viral last week, garnering thousands of shares and retweets on social media and inspiring dozens of articles on sites ranging from The Mary Sue to the Guardian and even the Daily Mail, all helping to expose the manly men of the manosphere as the entitled manbabies they are, so threatened by women with power that the very thought of Charlize Theron as a badass postapocalyptic road warrior causes them to lose their collective shit.

Their “boycott” is a bit of a failure as well, to say the least. The film — which so far has garnered an impressive 98% of positive reviews according to Rotten Tomatoes — took in close to $17 million at the box office on Friday (in North America), and is expected to earn more than $40 million this weekend alone.

UK Election: Mike Buchanan of the Justice for Men and Boys party gets 153 votes. Not 153,000. 153.

Apparently the UK elections are a bit of a disaster. But there is one bit of good news amidst the wreckage:

Mike Buchanan of the Justice for Men and Boys party is a huge loser.

This dude grooving to MIA’s Bad Girls with a tiny kitten on his shoulder is the best dude grooving to MIA’s Bad Girls with a tiny kitten on his shoulder you’ll see all day

Even though I’m a dude, it’s hard for me to hear MIA’s “Bad Girls” without wanting to stop whatever I’m doing and strut.

Apparently I’m not the only dude who’s more into that song than perhaps we, as dudes, have a right to be.

BONUS! Here is another dude who’s really, really into it.

Viral Video Comedy Corner: Fedora Defender vs. Viral Kitten

The video above — in which a highly agitated young fellow with poor camera technique defends his sartorial choice — got posted in the comments here yesterday, and frankly it was too good not to share.

Oh, SPOILER ALERT: The fedoraed gentleman is not for real. He’s a YouTube comedian of sorts who specializes in surreal, awkward and often disturbing videos in the vein of television’s Tim and Eric.

I especially liked this VIRAL KITTEN video he posted the other day, and not just because it contains a kitten.

This Blender Box Blog Race is pretty exciting as well.

"Would You Kill a Pony for Me?" and other real dating questions asked by an imaginary Swedish Girl

This pic has nothing to do with the post today, but it does feature a giant chicken, from a film called “The Hoboken Chicken Emergency.”

Today, something a bit lighter than usual. Someone recently posted the a link in the comments here to a hilarious blog called Swedish Girl Seeking, which displays the results of a simple but wicked dating site experiment being carried out by a couple of funny Swedes.

The two – a female comic book artist and a male comedian – set up a phony dating profile featuring a “blonde, happy-go-lucky, kind of over-sexual cliché of a Swedish woman.” (The female half of the couple posed in a cheap blond wig for the pics.)

When a legion of hopeful, horny men besieged the imaginary girl’s inbox with come-ons ranging from awkward to crude, the Swedes responded with surreal silliness. And then posted the most ridiculous conversations online.

While there are a few genuinely creepy messages amongst the dozens posted on the site – it looks like the Swedish duo kept the worst messages to themselves – the most amazing ones reflect a certain willful obliviousness on the part of the hopeful male admirers. Nothing she says is too bizarre to faze them.

Banner Contest Update: Now With Cash Prize!

leocigale's entry in the contest
leocigale’s entry in the contest

Hey, everyone, just a quick update on the  still-ongoing We Hunted the Mammoth banner contest (the details of which are here).

First, I want to thank all those who’ve contributed so far. Some great stuff!

Second, I want to announce that due to the generosity of some Man Boobz — soon to be We Hunted the Mammoth — readers, the contest now has a cash prize of $100.

Thanks very much for those who’ve donated, and if you want to add more to the prize, use the regular Man Boobz donation button, but include a note saying you want the money earmarked for the prize. (Also include a little codeword or phrase; I want to be transparent with this, so I will list the donations later according to these code phrases so you know your money went to the prize.)

Also, a question: I’m wondering what you folks think should happen if I want to use more than one of the designs? Split the prize money?

The contest will run through Sunday. So submit if you haven’t already!

Here are some of the submissions so far. Anyone is free to use the artwork in a banner design of their own (and if it wins you’ll split the prize with the artist).
