Racist Jacksonville shooter: Open thread

The white shooter painted swastikas on his guns and left behind several racist manifestos; he apparently intended to kill students at the historically black Edward Waters University but was chased away by security and went to a Dollar General store instead. He killed three black shoppers and then himself.

This is the country we live in now.

Open thread.

@Alan: Railway cats are superb. There’s that entire Japanese line themed around Tama the stationmaster (and her successors), so why not name one train after Redruth?

I snorted audibly at the bus sign photo!

And “Greenland” absolutely was a marketing ploy of Leif’s. If he’d told the truth, nobody would have come for him to boss around.

Alan – Thanks for the info! I knew you’d have something to say on this detail.

Mind you, if you come from Scandinavia maybe everywhere seems hot? These are the people who called that big island of ice ‘Greenland’ after all. Although that may have been a marketing ploy.

Summer weather can be about equally warm here as in Britain, just for a bit shorter duration. I’m personally becoming super sensitive to heat and humidity as I get older, but that might be just me. I don’t really handle cold well, either.

A warm summer day’s weather in late September would’ve been quite unexpected. But overall, I can’t understand how medieval warriors with their armor managed to fight in North European summer, let alone in Mediterranean summer heat.

Alan and other people with an interest in the British legal system may enjoy this quote.

I’ve been re-reading the Mrs. Pargeter series by Simon Brett. Mrs. Pargeter is the widow of a man who could be called the Napoleon of crime, but he would’ve probably preferred being called the Wellington instead. The late Mr. Pargeter adored his wife and carefully shielded her from all of his activities, though he did leave her a little black book of all his associates, all of whom are simply delighted to assist Mrs. P as a posthumous thank-you to their departed mentor. This of course includes lawyers.

The late Mr Pargeter … had always had a great respect for the British legal system, and the particular quality of it that he admired was its elasticity. The point of having a lawyer on your side was not so that that lawyer could bend or change the law, but rather that he could find in existing legal precedent justification for more or less any action that was required.

In keeping with this philosophy, Mr. P had (ahem) contributed to the education of a number of lawyers, who have been trained to provide skillful legal assistance.

Fun series, though definitely a product of their time.

It is quite possible that the buses haven’t done anything at all, but that other vehicles might have problems, Manchester has at least two automatic bus gatess and other vehicles really don’t want to try using those bits of road: https://youtu.be/KIas-5pwpZk I can’t find the video of a Range Rover being lifted up by one, but it is a classic!

And the weather here in the Manchester area is a hot-for-here-in-September 24C with a hazy sky an a muggy feel. Although the forecat was for 29C, which it mght be outside.

Sounds like what we can expect Elon Musk to do if he ever actually goes to Mars.

Lots of comments on Lawtwitter arguing with the Trump supporting lawyers and their optimistic arguments. But best riposte so far:

“You wouldn’t know that Law. It goes to a different school.”

Well, still don’t take off your armour. Or next thing you know you’re on a bridge getting stabbed in your nether regions.

Both 1066 and the colonization of Greenland were during the Medieval Warm Period, so it might have been as warm as it is nowadays in September.

However, even in the warmest period before this century, Greenland still wasn’t very green. It still had ice sheets and not much arable soil.

A story that brings to mind a possibly apocryphal account of Uesugi Kenshin’s death at the hands of a ninja lurking beneath a latrine with a spear. (And now watch some TERF cite that as proof of the Awful Things that await you in public restrooms.)

Heads up @Crip Dyke: Cloudflare has interposed itself between your Pervert Justice blog and the rest of the world and is blocking access to it for some reason. Trying to view it brings up a Cloudflare page instead of yours, and there’s no evident way to bypass it and view your blog. (No captcha or similar; they just seem to be blanket denying access.)

You will want to speak to whomever is hosting your blog about this. They might want to find a different DDoS protection provider (Google has a service that they offer) that will be better-behaved and block only DDoS traffic and not decide one day to start blocking everything else as well for no apparent reason.

@surplus & @ada

Thanks so much!

We had a DMCA abuser file a DMCA takedown against us. It was completely ridiculous, but legal procedure requires the **allegedly** offending material to be taken down before any claim can be contested.

They’re based in India and apparently do this just to be an asshat. Their website is the collected logos of a large but random set of websites. They then claim that their version of someone else’s logo is the original, no matter how farfetched (our logo had our URL in it, his URL was completely different).

The last time this happened it was at least understandable: it was some religious zealot who claimed we had stolen his writings so that he could win some victory for Christ against the godless. Fucking dirtbag, but at least you could understand his motivations.

Anyway, it’s been a trying couple of days at the ol’ pixel mines! Hope everything is good with you two.

That’s ridiculous. And so is Cloudflare getting into the DMCA enforcement business. They shouldn’t be blocking access to sites that are subjected to copyright disputes, their job is to block DDoS traffic and that is all. It’s up to the website host to deal with copyright complaints, not their subcontractors such as DDoS protection services.
