Fear and loathing on the Men’s Rights subreddit

Check out my new blog My AI Obsession.

It’s been a little while since I looked in on the Men’s Rights subreddit and I guess I sort of forgot just how grouchy everyone there can get. So here are a few of the grouchier rants I found there today in several different threads, and the lessons we can learn from them.

Lesson One: We need a real patriarchy to put the ladies in their places, except that they’ll actually like it.

According to Correct-Reporter1872,

We need to stop worrying about whether or not women will value us because that’s never going to happen. We’re supposed to make THEM valuable to US. We’re the prize. Women require a separate person to make them feel safe, loved, and protected. They can’t function mentally without that. They will feel miserable and depressed. Us men don’t require any of that. That’s why we’re the prize. That’s not even including the fact that society will crumble without us.

If they want everything men have to offer, we have to make them earn it. That’s where we as men have failed, and that’s why women are able to openly hate, disrespect, and degrade us.

We need to be more like muslim nations in the sense that we put boundaries on women and severely limit their power. A true patriarchy. Not what braindead women call patriarchy in the West. The West has never been a patriarchy, even before fem-nazi-ism happened. If they think this is bad, wait until they experience an actual patriarchy. But ironically, they’ll end up loving it because the genders will finally be in harmony.

Lesson Two: Never trust A BIOLOGICALLY BORN FEMALE, who’s probably going to try to break up your marriage if you’re a female also.

Mrsclaw89–a lady MRA–seems a little bit miffed about something.

Women can dish out alot but can’t handle it being thrown back at em. They cry and then because they cry they “win”. Stop catering to women. I hate my fellow females for this very reason. I’ve seen how vile they can be. And sadly I was even a part of such a girl group until they started to invade my person life and tried to run my life and even went far enough to ruin my wedding day and tried to bully me into divorcing my husband because they didn’t think I deserved a husband BUT THEY DID CUZ THEY WERE PERFECT ON PAPER. like a man truly cares about a women being perfect on paper. He’s looking for more than that which they didn’t have and it hurt their bs ego so much they did the worst to get me divorced and tried to send my husband to jail over his product of incest ex gfs lies.

MEN, DO NOT EVER TRUST A BIOLOGICALLY BORN FEMALE. ever! You’re entire life depends on it.

Lesson Three: Maybe it’s best if she tells you “no,” at least if you don’t want to be driven to homicide.

RandomYT05, who probably should not be around any deadly weapons, has this to say:

Everyone who tries to give me the ‘advice’ that “the worst that can happen is her saying no”, while I don’t think they are lying, they are however extremely out of touch with how risky it is nowadays. Because in the past, things weren’t as bad, and the actual worst thing was her saying no. Nowadays though, the worst thing that can happen is a sexual assault or rape allegation. Or even worse, she says yes and after you think you’ve found love and your happily ever after, she betrays you, divorces you, takes your own children away from you, etc. Sometimes even drives you to suicide, homicide, or she’ll be the one commiting the homicide against you. Seriously, it’s gotten so bad that the BEST thing that can happen is her saying no, and just saying no.

Lesson four: Beware of poltergeists when there are no men around:

B1uefalc0n explains:

Everything that men do no matter how essential or important is taken for granted. Only when something breaks and needs repaired or when something moved in the house at night or when we are in a bad situation that we need to get out of are men valued and as soon as we resolve the issue it is forgotten and we are back at square one.

Lesson five: Maybe we should just all kill ourselves, see if they like it.

This one deserves a little screenshot:

In conclusion, MRAs truly are a bunch of self-defeating misogynist grouches. I mean, jeez, dudes, it’s not healthy to get this mad about a bunch of nothing.

Really, if all the MRAs went Jonestown it would probably be a net gain if only for the amount of oxygen they’d free up

Not to invoke the “All Cretans Are Liars” paradox, but why should they trust that statement, or anything else, from you?

@David: Fear and Loathing is the Men’s Rights subreddit.
FTFY.

No wonder they’re such losers who never get anything done. They spend all their time reading/watching/posting this crap, and when they’re not being keyboard warriors, they’re cowering in fear of everything, including half the population and the Chads who are supposedly getting all the chicks. And foreigners, and non-whites, and non-straights… OK, 80-90% of the population.

@Nequam: I suppose their family members would miss them.

@FMOx: Pff. There you go expecting logic from these chuds again. If they could think clearly, they wouldn’t be incels. I’m pretty sure they don’t trust trans women even more, though they were generally AMAB. Also, that’s probably another guy.

“Women require a separate person to make them feel safe, loved, and protected. They can’t function mentally without that. They will feel miserable and depressed. Us men don’t require any of that.”

So THAT’S why incels are so famously happy and well-functioning!

I guess one thing I’ll never understand is directing this much hate at people we live with and grow up with, sisters and mothers, rather than the bosses who treat us like shit. Who are the *actual* reason why both most women and most women are undervalued and underappreciated. Even without a capitalist understanding, it just seems like it’d be visceral and automatic to go the other way.

@Full Metal Ox: Dare I wonder if MrsClaw89 is hiding something from us or them?

Why did “Goodbye Horses” start playing in my head?

She’s not naming the crime. And just because his ex-girlfriend is (allegedly) the product of incest, that doesn’t make her a liar.

“Only trust women if they’re trans” is not the message I was anticipating hearing from Men’s Rights commenters when I woke up today.

It’s the last one that startles me.

I had expected a lot of things from the manosphere, but a stealth enlistment pitch from the VHEMT isn’t one of them.

If all the MRAs were to squick themselves, there would be a lot less whining and hate in the world. I’ve never seen a set of men so dependent on women and so filled with hate due to this dependency. If you really don’t need or want something, you don’t spend all your time pining over how you can’t have it, and how awful it is.

And don’t get me started on the ‘we prevent you from doing things, and then blame you for not doing them’ logic.

Strange to hear an MRA sound a little like Y: The Last Man and The Power. Those books appear to assume there’s a widespread belief that a world run by women would be a magical paradise – the stories try too hard to prove that it would have the same conflicts and the same struggles for domination. The first book makes it explicit when Yorick asks why the women aren’t at the UN holding hands.

What they’re refuting is the utopian science fiction of first-wave feminism: the likes of “Herland” and “The Sultana’s Dream.”

We’re supposed to make THEM valuable to US. We’re the prize.

And what a prize you are. That is some pretty excellent ‘self-undermining statement’ there. I honestly can’t believe why women wouldn’t line up to date you.

Seriously, it’s gotten so bad that the BEST thing that can happen is her saying no, and just saying no.

Please stay away from women. And the idea of dating in general.

Since I haven’t read those stories, I don’t know if they were intended as allegories to make a point about patriarchy, or as literal claims of how a manless world would work. Similar to how Orwell intended Nineteen Eighty-Four as a qualified warning, even though it’s been misinterpreted as a doomsday prediction. My hunch is that almost no feminist actually believes that a world without men would be totally free of war or greed, and that attempts to discuss the scenario as a thought experiment get misinterpreted as literal claims.

Re: All-female utopias – I read a sci-fi novel a long time ago called “Ammonite” (unrelated to the movie with the same name) which was essentially a feminist critique of the general idea; it took place on a quarantined planet which had a virus that was 100% fatal to men and changed women so they could reproduce with each other using a form of spirit-sex. While gender/sex based bigotry obviously couldn’t exist, and this was set in a distant future when racism wasn’t really a thing, there were still conflicts: Personality clashes, petty tyranny, tribalism, and raiding for limited resources.

More generally, it seems like the idea of all-female utopias comes from the idea that women are far more likely to work things out diplomatically rather than engage in violence and/or dominance struggles, and a government run by women would be strongly socialistic. That’s not at all clear how realistic it would be; historically women have rarely been in a position to engage in violence and/or dominance struggles due to oppression, and the type of woman who wants to remove men as much as possible from their lives (if not become outright separatists) tends to already be highly motivated towards engaging in a degree of communism and/or socialism with their own communities, and may not necessarily reflect women in general.

To chime in on feminine utoptias:
I always look at real life examples of women in power throughout history. Whether a medieval warlord type ordering the wholesale slaughter of whoever threw off their groove (heh, a Disney reference), to a modern day CEO, they have a tendency to take on similar traits to their male counterparts. Power corrupts, people who have it and know they can use it any way they like will often do exactly that. (And there is evidence people with character traits like the so-called “Dark Triad” gravitate to positions of power.)

So, I more or less assume if you didn’t have gendered social influences on behavior, there wouldn’t be any watered down examples of female leaders being less abusive than male ones, they’d be virtually indistinguishable in their deeds

Your daily reminder that every time you think incels and MRAs have reached the height of absurdity, they’ll find a way to top it.

Ha! They may find comfort in this song by Loudon Wainwright III.

You just need to look at how women treated their slaves, which was usually terrible. Same with how noblewomen treated the peasants. Power definitely corrupts.

I am surprised the saying “Shit rolls downhill” wasn’t in the link. I suppose that saying could be interpreted as more of a force of nature sort of thing rather than malicious action on the part of people though
