Well, it’s been quite a year, huh. Hopefully the next one will be a little better?
Reflect on the past year, or speculate on the one ahead. Make resolutions, or don’t. Whatever you want. This is your thread.
Here, to start things off on the right foot, is the full animated version of that graphic above.
Also, if you’re interested, here are some pictures of Jordan Peterson holding up giant slabs of raw meat. (They aren’t real photos, of course; they came from you-know-where. I apologize for the fucked-up eyes and occasional extra fingers.)
HAPPY NEW YEAR!1!1!!! And thanks for your continued support!

I dunno. Are you sure the second one isn’t real?
Oh, and since I feel like it has been too long and it would be pseudo necrothreading business to go back to the other thread: I really appreciate everyone wishing me well on the dating thing. We did just have our second date. We’re both a bit weird and she messaged me something that sounded a little like she was losing interest yesterday, but that seems to be a false alarm based on her attitude today.
Dreambooth allows you to make deepfakes of real people without batting an eye?
Interesting.
Also interesting is how we went from “Happy new year 2013! Happy new year 2014! Happy new year 2015!” to “Good riddance 2016! Good riddance 2017! … Good riddance 2022!”
Will it ever go back to the way it was? Or has Trump permanently defiled and tainted everything everywhere?
First off, “Prospero ano” to my fellow Mammothers (sorry, can’t seem to italicize Prospero Ano, hence the quotes).
@Surplus to Requirements:
“Or has Trump permanently defiled and tainted everything everywhere?”
My gut response? Probably at least for the time being. My more defiant response? I’ll be damned if I don’t stand against his tide of filth–even if my defiance is simply to stand for what I believe in and curse the lies.
My goal: to live long enough to see him in his grave. Would I prefer to see him face justice for the shit he’s unleashed on this country?
Oh, hell, yeah.
But I’m a realist, and I’ll take what I can get.
On a *completely* different note: can any of my fellow Mammothers provide me with the names of some good books on Vikings & Norse culture (kinda looking at you, Alan Robertshaw)?
I already have several of Neil Price’s books but am always open to more information.
In honor of the incoming Year of the Rabbit, here’s a crowd at Yantai University doing the Chinese Bunny Hop (for which the Italian song “Penguin’s Game” by Gelato somehow got repurposed):
@ObSidJag feliz y próspero año nuevo to you too, and to all the mammotheers!
(I get a little row of formatting buttons at the bottom of the comment box, have yours maybe glitched somehow?) (incidentally, re your comment that
– reminds me irresistably of a song by Elvis Costello about Thatcher: Tramp the Dirt Down
(if you aren’t familiar with the lyrics, you can probably guess what the title refers to :-s))
Happy new year to all of you ! Strong health and wish realization !
Hyvää uuttavuotta, Mammotheers, from Finland!
I have my new fridge and it is rockin’, and my kitties are behaving and had no trouble at all with the fireworks.
Happy New Year! 🎆
@ obsidjag
Well I grew up in the former Danelaw; so I like to think I just have an innate understanding.
But I’m not sure I can think of one book per se. Over the years I’ve just read all sorts. And I have an archaeologist friend who sends me links to papers she thinks I might find interesting. (She’s a forensic osteo-archeologist. These days she works for the war crimes tribunal; but she was one of the people who pointed out that that ‘warrior’ skeleton was actually a lady)
The Jorvik centre has some good resources. It’s ostensibly aimed at kids; but their stuff is very accurate. They see it as their mission to dispel the myths; but still make it all very exciting.

I ramble a bit about Norse influence in ‘Britain’ here from around 42:00
Speaking of history, I am currently looking into ancient roman dog epitaphs. It’s sort of work related, and not making me cry at all. No siree, not one bit.
(* We know Helena was a dog as there’s a picture)
@opposablethumbs Thanks for the Elvis Costello song. I had never heard that one. Happy New Year to all.
Happy New Year.
@Alan, my dog had to be put to sleep on Friday afternoon. I’m working on suitable words for her memorial. Those Roman ones look like a useful place to start.
@.45
I don’t know what your dating goal is, but if it’s a long-term relationship, I would encourage assuming the most positive interpretation of texts rather than negative, as text generally leaves little space for nuance (unless you write books like me, a whole different problem to warn people of in advance). But if in doubt, just ask, as no one worth keeping was ever offended by clarity in communication.
@RJ Dragon
Sorry to hear it, honestly it’s the worst when you lose a pet and nothing but time helps.
Oh RJ, I am so sorry to hear that. What a hole in our hearts they leave.
This project has really brought home how people have always been people. I bet there were cro-magnons missing their dogs too.
ETA: From Pompeii. Said ‘Cave Canem’. ‘Beware of the dog’ (I bet he was a big softy really)
Despite death of family, I managed a few things. I passed all my classes so I get to graduate with a Bachelors. I got a new job tjat a W2 instead of those crimes against humanity independent contractor jobs and have my own phone plan and internet plan to be more independent from my folks.
I’m going to predict that Tate does some time, somewhere, in some country.
This lawyer does a great job of isolating his felonies, which he himself video-bragged about openly. He basically did the Law’s work for them. For someone claiming to be “the smartest person on earth”, he stupidly bragged about his illegal activities online.
I love how other YouTubers get sponsorship from companies that have all sorts of groovy products; and lawyers have to make document templates sound as exciting as Gucci handbags.
Happy New Year to all the Mammotheers, who provide me with education, laughs, and random journeys into things I didn’t know about.
I give you this snarky yet semi-informative news article about one of WHTM’s too-frequent topics:
https://www.sfgate.com/tech/article/twitter-san-francisco-offices-stink-17685635.php
Literalizing the metaphor.
Happy New Year everyone. I hope you all get at least some of your wishes come true.
I should be finally getting my prosthetic leg and an adapted car in the next few months. Freedom!
When I was scrolling through the pictures quickly, I thought they were real, or at most had the meat shopped in (I wasn’t counting fingers). #3 still could be real. My first thought was “why does he looked stoned in all of them, oh yeah, benzos.”
@.45: Yeah, you can’t tell from texts. F2F is what you can rely on.
@Oogly: Congrats! Such good news. Proud of you for getting that done.
@RJ: Deepest sympathies. I think we’ve all been in that position. Hugs.
Off topic maybe? But I’ve been following the story of the quadruple murder in Idaho for a few weeks. Now that they’ve caught a suspect who they say stalked the victims, the comment sections on news about the case are speckled with classic MRA or Incel creepy “What drove him to it?” posts. I mean, if he’s guilty, who would defend slashing four people to death? Anyway, those are my thoughts.
RJ Dragon
Sorry to hear about your dog, we had to put ours to sleep in August, it is always hard.
@ katherine
This is a good, non sensationalist or over speculative, summary of the current known facts.
Alan, Thank you.
I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year.
Hoppy Gnu Deer, everyone! Hope you get your good wishes granted for the coming year, or at least be headed in the right direction for them to come true. Me, I get to overhaul my entire diet and lifestyle for the next several years at least since I just got diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Which apparently means I won’t be able to enjoy my favorite foods anymore at a bare minimum. 🙁 On the other hand, my body is still producing some insulin, so it’s not as bad as it could be. Maybe I can eat my favorites on ‘cheat days’?

And since languages are a thing around here, here’s a pair involving translation issues. First up is an example of why you need ether a native speaker and/or someone extremely fluent in the targeted language to go over whatever the online translator program spits out to make sure everything sounds right. (This is a Chinese to English menu, btw):

The second involves a contract company in Egypt who was supposed to stencil certain phrases on the side of a fuel tanker.

Oops.
I’ll post a few others later, since the comment filter here doesn’t like tons of links to deal with in single posts.
