We’re through the looking glass, people!
At least according to one ever-so-slightly paranoid Reddit MGTOW, posting in the MGTOW 2.0 subreddit (a supposedly smarter spinoff from the original r/MGTOW), who is convinced that the COVID pandemic is turning men worldwide into pathetic, woman-worshipping simps.
“Is it just me,” asks Alpha9302, “or does the ‘pandemic’ massively increased [sic] the simping done by men globally?”
Consider his, er, evidence.
I got a feeling that simping is starting to be a new standard of interactions between men and women, especially online. And in combination with the rise of onlyfans accounts, continued isolation and a lack of human contact, I fear for a change in society where the genuine attention and contributions from men will no longer have any value and women on a large scale will use men like toys in a toy store and dispose of us when we are no longer needed and go to the next one. Instead of appreciating us for who we are and what we can give and show their respect. Like now it feels like massive hypergamy. This is just how I felt online before I deleted several social media apps recently.
And he thinks the Chinese have their fingerprints all over this pandemic, which is also (in his view) totally fake. Responding to a commenter who took issue with him using the word “pandemic” at all, Alpha9302 declared,
The only reason that I used the word ‘pandemic’ instead of something like ‘plandemic’ is because I was afraid Reddit would flag it as inappropriate or because it may have attracted some negative attention in this group. I actually don’t believe in the common narrative that the mainstream media is trying to make us believe. Its utter nonsense. Its very clear that China uses COVID-19 as a tool to gain more control over the west with the goal to become the most powerful country in the world in terms of resources and economically. Many parties are involved.
Onlyfans, hypergamy, the Chinese government — this conspiracy theory has it all.

Are you sure?
Where’s the antisemitism? :/
Wasn’t China already #1 in the world for money and power? They make all the stuff everyone else uses, and picked up the foreign aid that Agent Orange cut.
I “love” how miggies all generalize from “women don’t like me” to “women don’t like any men”. Nope, boys, you really are speshul snowflakes — just not in the way you think.
Dude, you’re watching too much porn.
Okay, Reddit let you say “plandemic” this time. Whew!
It sounds like he’s afraid women will treat men the way rotten men treat women.
“Oh no! I’m afraid women will treat me the way I want to treat women!”
They can rest easy then. Women aren’t interested in interested in interacting with them at all.
I’d say women continuing to do this is his actual problem.
Also I’m not from the US, but I’d be very surprised that OnlyFans is quite as culturally central as the Manosphere seems to think. Apart from a few small articles about how most people make very little money off it, I’ve barely heard of it apart from their complaints. Is it actually that big a deal?
@Mogwitch: About as big a deal as ‘hypergamy’, I’d guess? Except onlyfans has more basis in reality, by actually existing.
I suspect there’s a lot buried under those words.
[Emphasis mine]
So he wants women to press F?
Am I the only one who wonders if that guy has any idea how toy stores work?
Cause I don’t remember ever going to a toy store, getting a toy, playing with it there and throwing it away when I’m bored with it to move on in the same store.
“Onlyfans, hypergamy, the Chinese government”… OH, MY!!!
@ mogwitch
I was in the same boat. Mind you, someone had to explain to me what Til Tok was the other week; so I’m maybe not the most social media savvy person.
This story popped up today though.
https://www.thedailybeast.com/this-mom-is-doing-onlyfans-to-pay-for-her-daughters-law-school
In summary, someone is using Only Fans to fund their daughter’s legal education. That seems quite sweet. Judging from the photo, she demonstrates how to clean showers. If she can show how to get limescale off the plughole I might have to subscribe.
Well if a fifty-foot woman wants to pick men up like toys I don’t see how we can stop her— oh, that’s not what you meant.
(Yes, I know giants are also quite a common fantasy)
art students at my college have been hiring only fans women to use them for models for different drawing and sculpting class. This way it’s been social distaining and with people who are comfortable being naked in front of strangers for a couple hours ever other day and they get compensated for their time just like any other volunteers would in face to face classes.

@Alan : that level of dedication to your children is sweet, the amount of money she need to raise for that isn’t.
At least unlike some other similar case, she don’t seem to work two jobs to make ends meet, and as far as I can tell she don’t hate being forced in that kind of job*. I hope for the day where being a sex worker will be about as noteworthy as being a social worker.
From what I’ve heard about OnlyFans, the biggest issue is that a tiny number of people are making bank while nearly everyone else struggles to find enough of an audience to make it worth doing, and most never do. The competition for paid views has only gotten worse during the pandemic.
This is hardly unique to OnlyFans, though, or even the internet – there’s this whole sorting/recommendation thing that’s like “If you like X, then here’s the more well known versions/instances of X” where popularity and fame tends to snowball. What catches on enough to get frequently recommended is partially a matter of luck. (And partially a matter of many other things – ability to perform, ability to self-promote or good access to third-party promotion, dedication, access to resources, and difficult to quantify factors which vary based on what you’re doing, but luck still matters a great deal.)
I mean, think some local garage band versus something like Nickelback; garage bands range from total garbage to better than many well-known pop bands, but even the best ones will rarely be able to make a full-time career of it, let alone become famous. It’s more of an issue with the entertainment industry as a whole than any particular website or business. The issue has become exacerbated during the pandemic due to large numbers of people turning to amateur entertainment / educational / sexual videos as a form of survival work.
@Mogwitch
The manosphere thinks that if the average woman shows a bit of collar bone that a prince is going to show up to give her everything she wants out of life. They are known for over blowing how easy a woman’s life is. They really think that a woman can choose not to work if she wanted to.
@Alan
If you reframe it as “woman engages in sex work so that her daughter can afford otherwise-unaffordable higher education and better her life” it sounds less sweet and more like your typical boring late-stage capitalism dystopia.
I keep reading the headline as “Sinese plot to turn all men into chimps”
@PoM
Would be great if we could just have capitalism destroyed once and for all. Part of me has become sympathetic to anarchism and anti-civilisation stances because of how dehumanizing capitalism is.
@thread
OT, but I wonder what other hobbies you can recommend I take on, to stop myself from complaining online and to have something fun to do while I wait for a job application with the NHS, while I wait for my moving out application and my mental health appointment. I’m finding fewer and fewer games are my taste, especially first person shooters, because of specific gameplay reasons. I’ve even had to dabble briefly in single player shooters like DOOM Eternal sort of out of desperation. Yes, I’ve completed the game, no, I don’t want to try other difficulties beyond Ultra-Violence, and no, I’m not buying DLC at least at full price. Some games I want to avoid entirely for the time being because it reminds me of gender or other personal issues, or they can be quite a sad nostalgia trip for me, even a game like Cities: Skylines, which looks like it came out earlier than 2014. I recently tried Elite Dangerous, but got infuriated by the grind after completing an ill-fated mission.
I find programming inspirational but not as exciting to the same degree as playing games is.
I don’t particularly find reading interesting; the occasions I have been reading tended to be rather heavy books, both fictional and non-fictional. I also remember feeling envious of Katniss when I read the Hunger Games books and refuse to get into the franchise. When finishing books I also tend to feel bummed out and want to avoid feeling this way.
@Policy of Madness:
I’m reminded of that time a 9 year-old girl set up a lemonade stand to help pay for her mother’s cancer treatment, and all the American news outlets were going “How great! So sweet! A child’s love! Such an entrepreneurial spirit!” while the rest of the world’s media reporting was something more like “What the fuck is WRONG with you people???”
@ POM
Yeah, I do take your point there. I was going to refer to the case Rabid Rabbit mentioned.
There’s all sorts of issues really, from cost of higher education to how families pass on and accumulate wealth. You could probably write a paper on the whole phenomenon. Maybe someone has?
But in terms of the reality of our current society, I still think it’s nice of the mum to do that.
@PoM : an important point said in the article is that the women chose that line of work a long time ago, and tried other stuff but returned to sex work in the end. She’s more doing overtime to pay for the school of her daughter than anything.
It’s one of theses rare case where the fine print make the picture even slightly more bearable.
