incels mass shooting racism

8 dead in massage parlor shooting rampage, most of them Asian women: Open thread

This afternoon, a 21-year-old white man named Robert Aaron Long allegedly went on a shooting rampage at three massage parlors in the Atlanta, Georgia area. He reportedly killed eight people, six of them Asian women. He was arrested after a car chase.

This gives off the distinct whiff of an incel shooting, though at this point that’s just speculation. Obviously racism may have played a role as well.

Please post any reliable information on the shootings you run across.

… I hadn’t heard of this yet. My sincerest condolences to any here who knew those lost.

This makes me sick. Definitely incelish, but also it would surprise me if it wasn’t a culmination of all the anti Asian hate crimes that have been happening lately.

Why choose? Hatreds are perfectly happy to commingle and cross-pollinate.

This could have been the trifecta of misogyny, the alt right fetishization of Asian women, and the anti Asian racism that we are seeing elsewhere.

I rarely say something like this, but this really does give me a sick feeling in my stomach.

I understand on an intellectual level how someone can be motivated to do things like this, but on an emotional level I just can’t grasp it. I have been seeing a bunch of news articles lately that revolve around people killing kids and women, and I just can’t understand how someone could look a child or young woman in the face and go “Yep, I’m taking this out of the world.”

Full Metal Ox,

Oh, I’m not saying it’s one or the other. It definitely seems likely to be an intersection of racism and misogyny.

@weirwoodhugger:

And as women, Asians, and sex workers, the shooter may well have regarded the victims as thrice-qualified garbage cans for the impulses he refused to control.

Awaiting approval? What did I say?

It’s okay, actually. I’m just curious.

I just saw this in the news and came here to see if there was anything. I don’t think it’s going to turn out strictly racism, which is what the news is saying. Dude’s gonna turn out incel and mad that stereotypes about Asian massage parlors aren’t always true.

Although police in Georgia have not described a motive, the NYPD counter terrorism bureau announced it had deployed officers from their Critical Response Command to Asian communities around New York City.
“While there is no known nexus to #NYC we will be deploying assets to our great Asian communities across the city out of an abundance of caution,” the bureau said in a tweet.
On Tuesday evening the anti-hate group Stop AAPI Hate, founded in 2020 response to the rising xenophobia against Asian Americans during the Covid-19 pandemic, tweeted in response to the shootings: “Few details have been released, including whether or not the shootings were related or motivated by hate. But right now there is a great deal of fear and pain in the Asian American community that must be addressed.”

Definitely has incel/entitlement overtures. Did he want a ‘happy ending’ and got turned down? Race could easily have played a part as well.

I suppose it’s mathematically possible that it’s neither racism nor misogyny, but I think it’s far more likely to be both, and highly likely that he was abusive to girlfriends too.

I also notice that the police took him into custody without, apparently, giving him so much as a black eye, even though they had every reason to believe he was armed and extremely dangerous.

We’ll know more soon.

Reading an article linked here, I don’t expect the police to do squat (can we please say “fuck the police” here, they help no one but society’s superiors as evidenced too by a murder of a woman in the UK) and I fear this incident will embolden white religious patriarchal believers, who will twist it in some way to say “oh, they wronged this Godly man”.

They got him alive. Which would comfort me if I thought likely he got the justice he deserve.

@Makroth

Yeah I call bullshit on the “COVID was manufactured” myth. I’m more convinced by the theory that humanity’s further exploitation of animals and the environment is responsible for the virus.

Yeah, it appears he made clear public statements that he was killing local women because he believed that the Chinese government thousands of miles away had created COVID-19 in a secret lab, which, of course, is a crime to which Atlanta massage parlor employees must necessarily have been a party.

So I guess no racism or sexism here!

My heart goes out to the loved ones of these murdered women, their local community, Asian folks anywhere who have seen and experienced more racism and violence in this last year, anyone who is grieving and scared of what might happen next.

I don’t think so. Pretty sure he’s a virgin who most likely got rejected by an Asian woman. The Incel is strong on this one.

this reminds when I was in highschool we had a lot of foreign exchange students for such a tiny town. One of the kids we go was a boy that was from Pakistan and a Muslim. He was a sweet boy, very respectful, well mannered, kind. He was so excited to come to a new country and learn about it. People treated him like a terrorist. made 9/11 jokes, and all of that. I remember getting so mad and saying that even if a few Muslim people were responsible for 9/11, a 16 year old boy is not responsible for the sins that grown men committed before he could even walk.

I remember they had a day where the kids from the different countries presented for the school and taught us about their country and culture. Many had beautiful presentations about their homes and then his ended up being about how he wasn’t a terrorist and his people weren’t terrorist. There was a very heart breaking part about how his father didn’t abuse his mother or and that yes they were around the same age and in love because people made so many assumptions and comments.

This country is really good punishing innocent people for the crimes they think their race has committed. But somehow your racist if you say white people do racists things.

Now the police are releasing that he’s claiming ‘sexual addiction.’ And that he may have been a customer at one or more of these locations.
