Was an incel rioter just arrested for his role in the Capitol attack? The strange case of “Scuffed Elliot Rodger”

Christian Secor, in happier times

A UCLA student who sometimes called himself “Scuffed Elliot Rodger” online has been nabbed on assorted federal charges for his role in the January 6th attack on the Capitol, during which he was photographed sitting in Mike Pence’s seat in the Senate just moments after Pence was evacuated from the room.

According to an informant quoted in the FBI affidavit filed in the case, Christian Secor was laying low at his mother’s home in Costa Mesa California and bragging that he’d never get caught for his part in the Capitol attack.

Whoopsie daisy.

It’s not clear why Secor thought he’d get away with it. He showed up to the protest maskless and, according to the FBI affidavit, committed various federal crimes in front of a vast array of cameras, which caught him not only sitting in Pence’s chair but also helping a crowd break through the outer doors of the Capitol.

Not only that, but Secor is something of a celebrity on the UCLA campus, infamous for starting a far-right campus group, America First Bruins, associated with nationalist extremist Nick Fuentes. A piece on Secor that ran back in April of last year in the publication Ha’Am (“UCLA’s Jewish Newsmagazine”) described him as a “textbook” fascist, noting that his Twitter timeline was riddled with antisemitic tweets and that he once described fascism as “epic.”

It’s no wonder that eleven separate people sent tips on Secor to the FBI.

Secor’s world view seems to be a mashup of a number of different far-right ideologies. A stroll through tweets archived from his now-banned Twitter accounts make clear that his main allegiance is to Fuentes and his “Groyper” troll army. Topics range from the alleged evils of the Jews, to the magnificence of far-right commentator Michelle Malkin, to a declaration that “Vapor wave is the official music of our people.”

What about the incel label? While there are a few tweets that dabble in incel lingo it seems like Secor called himself “Scuffed Elliot Rodger” not so much in homage to the mass killer than as a sort of “trigger the libs” style joke; with only a few exceptions, his tweets aren’t misogynistic enough for Secor to be welcome in the incel movement. They have standards, you know.

It’s not clear why Secor thought he’d get away with it.

Because he’s a conservative white man and conservative white men are very used to getting away with everything?

“Vapor wave is the official music of our people.”

Finally my dislike of vaporwave music is justified.

I’m not into vapourwave-the-music, but I’m kind of charmed by the vaporwave-the-aesthetic, so damn neonazis for trying to take over and ruin yet another thing.

Y’all see this thing about Tennessee lawmakers wanting to make it so that any man can show up, claim to be the father of some woman’s pregnancy and then stop her from getting an abortion because they want to give fathers a say in what happens to the pregnancy.

oh and there is nothing in there for exceptions for rape and incest because the dude doesn’t think a man will come to a court and say “yeah I raped her, the kid is mine” he also doesn’t think men would ever lie and say the sex was consensual or that an abusive man would do this to keep control over his victim trying to get away from him.

Off topic, David, but have you seen this? Any thoughts?

On topic! I really hope that some of these people involved in the Capitol Hill attack get convicted. It would definitely send a message – or so I would hope.

Hooray!

@Elaine The Witch:

…what?

I wish I could say I was surprised, but I’m actually mostly bemused that it doesn’t seem to have been tried before.

ETA:

Also off-topic, I was reading about how FKA Twigs refused to answer the question “Why didn’t you just leave?” in an interview about her allegations against Shia LeBeouf, saying instead,

“the question should really be to the abuser: why are you holding someone hostage with abuse? People say it can’t have been that bad, because else you would’ve left. But it’s like, no, it’s because it was that bad, I couldn’t leave.”

Standing ovation, of course. And then I came across this, which is one of the more horrifying examples of what this can lead to. The spouse of the mass shooter who killed 22 people in Nova Scotia last week is apparently haunted by the fear that he was looking for her and killing the people he came across in his search, and that if she just hadn’t left (or perhaps if he’d just killed her), he might not have killed all those people. That poor woman. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/mass-shootings-lisa-banfield-statements-search-warrants-1.5921019

This is heartening to see:

Their mandate includes looking at the role of gender-based and intimate partner violence as well as access to firearms.

Are they finally figuring it out?

A bunch of Oath Keepers have been charged with conspiracy, among other things, in connection with the failed putsch:

I’m saddened to see that Canadians seem about as sue-happy as Americans. I can’t imagine how I’d feel if I got away from a killing spree committed by my former partner and then was slapped with criminal charges for helping my murderous narcissistic unstable partner who probably already had me in fear of my life buy more ammo and gasoline, and THEN got hit with lawsuits by the families of the people he killed and know that the only way they can probably win such a suit is to paint me as a willing accomplice or someone somehow fully culpable for my partner’s psychopathic behavior rather than a fearful abused spouse. The estate was large, but I doubt she got to enjoy much of the money she made, let alone any of his, during the years they were together, because guys like this love holding full financial control in the relationship and she probably had to go to him and make a case for every expenditure he didn’t think was essential. Her abuse has been documented by police. And she’s still having to sue for control of his estate, herself, because surprise surprise, looks like he had no legal documentation in place to definitively pass things on to her in the event of his demise.

Either these families must actually believe that she was a truly willing accomplice who wasn’t at all motivated to help him by fear for her own safety, or they don’t care if their added pressure makes her life so much more difficult such that she may crack and harm herself or worse, like some slimeball lawyer saw he was well off, and talked the families into seeing dollar signs. I feel bad for them for their losses and I could see it if they were only asking to cover funeral/burial costs, medical expenses and property losses, but the fact they’re ALSO suing the province/RMCP for it as well and it’s class action rather than individually itemized makes it stink of naked profiteering to me… they’re trying to leverage this tragedy. What a bunch of horrible sounding people.

Hope she has some sort of psychiatric help and counseling, I don’t think I could cope with it if I were her. Either her psycho former spouse killed all her real friends or she didn’t have any real trustworthy friends of her own (sadly, that’s often the case for abused spouses), and that’s a big tragedy in itself.

Thanks, everyone. We’re fine. Any news footage you have seen from Texas is likely accurate – in other words, it really was that bad here last week.

The Parasol household has been very lucky. We lost power for a few days, but water has stayed pretty stable, other than the fact that we’re now under a boil water advisory. Tuesday night was the worst – it got to 40-50 degrees F inside the house, and we were all huddled in bed under as many covers as we could find. I grew up in a colder part of the Midwest, and was bemused as to how many of my old winter coping skills came back.

I’ve run out of coping energy and am trying to restock.

We’re in Kansas right now. The snow and cold has hit as well. Our power was off and on for three days where we live. But we’re okay. My bulldog did not like having to wear a sweater to keep him warm but he wore it. My border collie just slept a lot in her little cave of blankets. and the cat just curled up by the wood burning stove. It looks like its finally moving away though.

I told my husband we’re moving to Arizona after this cause I hate the cold so much.

Glen Greenwald rabbiting on about the capitol attack. I have no idea whether the article is good or bad; I never read his stuff. I thought he was a knobhead before it was fashionable.

I wonder what Greenwald assumes the rioters were going to do with their targets if they got their hands on them. I would say it would be reasonable to assume that, at the very least, some amount of bodily harm would have been done to them. And that it is unreasonable to assume that they would have sat down with them to have a chat and try to convince them to not certify Biden. Or that they would have just accepted it had they not been convinced and wanted to certify anyway.

And how do they expect you to do that? The last time I checked, kettles don’t work without power.

Arizona’s right next door to Texas and likely got hammered too.

I’d suggest Hawaii, for both of you. The ocean around it gives it a year-round mild climate and it’s a bluer state by far than Arizona.

On the other hand, they have active volcanoes and North Korea missile alerts. Hmm.

For emergency cooking, I’m a big fan of hexamine blocks. They cost next to nothing in camping or army surplus stores. You can get little cookers for them too for a couple of quid. Although when out and about it’s easy enough just to build something with stones.

But they’re surprisingly hot. Stick three on the stove and you could broil a diplodocus.

(Don’t broil diplodocuses.)

But look how happy these guys are!

Arizona is a few hundred miles away from Texas, so I don’t know if they got hit. I haven’t heard about that, but possible, though New Mexico lies between them.

@Surplus

Boiling water’s pretty easy for us and a lot of other Texans. Some of us (like the Parasol household) have working stovetops. I’ve been boiling a couple quarts of water throughout the day, letting it cool, and then transferring it to a pitcher (the kind with a lid) in the refrigerator. Annoying, but possible and safe. ETA: Not using a kettle ‘cos I don’t own one. I do, however, have a large saucepot.

Last week some people were melting snow on a pot thanks to their backyard grills. (This is Texas. Lots of people have backyard grills.) The snow is pretty much gone now, but if you have running water and no power, you can boil water on your Old Smokey or your Weber or whatever you’ve got to bring the heat.

The folks who really have it rough are the ones who don’t have running water at all. Those people are having to buy bottled water (which is safe to drink), or collect water at a public distribution site.

I’m not going to say it’s easy, but there are options.

Some of my TX friends are still without running water, hopefully by tomorrow at least the management’s promised porta-potties will arrive.
