Police brutality at the anti-police brutality protests: A video roundup

By David Futrelle

I‘ve run across so many videos of police misconduct and brutality aimed at George Floyd protesters, media, and even onlookers that I thought it might be helpful to gather them all in once place. Feel free to add more in the comments below and I can add them to the post.

Warning: Some of these videos are quite disturbing.

The casualness of the brutality in this first clip is striking. This is someone who has zero fear of ever being held accountable for his abuse.

Police initially said this man “tripped” and fell. Thankfully, he did not die from his head injuries but remains in the hospital in serious condition.

Protesters aren’t the only ones being assaulted by cops:

Here’s what that looked like from the point of view of the cameraman who got punched.

This is just a full-on police riot:

Make sure to watch this one until the end:

I hope that doesn’t screw up my recent order. I mean, I don’t use Amazon much because I don’t want Bezos to have my money, but occasionally I just can’t find exactly what I’m looking for any other way.

Apparently OAG added voice actress Allegra Clark to the list because she retweeted Sesame Street. I can’t stop laughing at how ridiculous this is.

POLICE OFFICER TELLS PROUD BOYS TO HIDE INSIDE BUILDING BECAUSE THEY’RE ABOUT TO TEAR GAS PROTESTERS. THE OFFICER SAID HE WAS WARNING THEM “DISCRETELY” BECAUSE HE DIDNT WANT PROTESTERS TO SEE POLICE “PLAY FAVORITES.”

“Traitor” means exactly the same thing as “socialist” to people like OAG: “anything or anyone that I don’t like.”

@PoM

So basically he would read Frank Wilhoit’s description of conservatism and declare it Right and Good?

@Allandrel
IIRC Wilhoit was trying to criticize conservatism with what he said. Sadly, I wouldn’t be surprised to see conservatives today use it as a mission statement (if they don’t already).

Twitter thread:
The protester, Robert Forbes, died. Bakersfield police say it was an accident.

Does… does that mean Big Bird is a traitor?

I keep watching the guy in the video, trying to read his body language. He looks remarkably calm after having struck a human being with his vehicle moving at high speed.

That’s because he’s a psychopath.

A normal person who has just committed as heinous an act as murder, especially in full view of police and other witnesses, would have at least a fairly serious case of the jitters.

This one was not normal, even by violent-conservative-white-supremacist standards.

When the normal rules of civilization are at bay, the psychopaths come out to play, using other, normalized violent groups (e.g. right-wingers and police) as cover.

How many of the police themselves are psychopaths? I’ll bet it’s a noticeable percentage.

I think we have to be careful making any assumptions about what is a normal or abnormal response to traumatic incidents. I’m not commenting about the individual case here, but generally.

Lindy Chamberlain was falsely convicted precisely because she was deemed to be too calm.

And it’s a dangerous habit in all sorts of other ways. Look at how people judge rape victims when they don’t behave in accordance with assumptions.

There are as many types of responses to trauma as there are people.

OMFG holy shit y’all

https://www.axios.com/minneapolis-city-council-police-department-7261b5b0-73d0-4180-aa77-e0be5f8cea0f.html

They actually did it. Minneapolis City Council voted to disband the police dept. With a veto proof majority. Holy SHIT.

Really incredible good news about Minneapolis amongst all the violent retribution police are inflicting on protestors. Direct action works. Everyone who has been out there in Minneapolis and elsewhere has won a victory.

I hope the new system they devise will not just be more of the same. This quote from the article Catalpa shared seems positive:

Council members said on Sunday that they had not yet fleshed out specific plans for what the new public safety system will look like, but said they would commit to working with the community and draw on past studies and policing reforms around the world for guidance, the New York Times reports.

I’d say it’s worth looking into what we might call the Camden, NJ model of defunding police and see if that model can be applied elsewhere:

(Note: This article is from 2018. Does anyone know of a more recent news story on the topic?)

I was subjected to a few minutes of Faux News. The big, all-caps banner on screen the whole segment read:

POLICE UNDER ATTACK

No, they did not show any images of police brutality. It turns out that the cops are poor helpless victims who are being prevented from defending themselves against armies of thugs.

I really like this photo; I think it’s very en pointe. The General Lee monument in Richmond; which I understand they are going to take down now.

Talked to my mom on the phone just now. We talked about the protests a little and I can’t help but be a little bit disappointed. My mom used to be a leftist firebrand in her youth, but now she’s as rightwing as they come. She’s bought into pretty much every rightist lie about the protest (including that the protestors have shot first in the vast majority of the cases where cops have shot people and also that protestors have been bused in from “outside the communities”, not to mention that she believes that protestors have 1) set fire to houses and then 2) stopped firefighters getting to the location causing people to have burned to death). I’m just…tired, honestly. 🙁

My dad believes some kind of conspiracy story about the Buffalo knocked-down guy, that the whole thing was faked and the guy had fake blood coming out of a tube near his ear. My dad claims to have seen a pic that shows the tube of fake blood, not knowing that photoshop exists I guess.

He read it on some site, and it comports with his belief system, therefore it must be true.

I’ve been staying with my parents the past couple of days, and it’s been … a trial, to say the least.
