Breitbart editor-at-large John Nolte got a lot of side-eye yesterday when he suggested in a tweet that 16-year-old environmental activist Greta Thunberg deserved a spanking.
It turns out that Nolte wasn’t the only person — or even the only middle-aged man — whose first thought upon seeing Thunberg address the world on the existential issue of our ongoing climate catastrophe was, hmm, I think that teenage girl needs a good paddling!
Here are a few of the others.
Some felt it was her parents who deserved this sort of punishment.
“When you run out of arguments, there’s always hitting” doesn’t really seem like the greatest way to deal with children, or adults.

There’s no one more hated than a teenage girl. Especially if she ever steps out of the patriarchal line.
@ brian
It ties in with the “gold” that comes a few words later in the tweet: Au is the chemical symbol for gold.
(I see the right haven’t got any wittier.)
@Naglfar:
Only if he’s white.

I’ve been suspecting this is the real motif for a while now. Evangelicals can’t wait for the Apocalypse and to watch us burn in hell for all eternity, for having mocked them for their bigotry. They are a malevolent bunch.
They should be careful not to keep on pushing. Lately I’ve been hearing the idea of violent revolution, as a way to save humanity, being more openly discussed than ever before. You can tell there is a greater sense of urgency.
Hopefully the issue gets tackled before it blows up into WWIII.
Ummm – lipstick contains lead? Please link. The only makeup I wear is lipstick to hide skin cancer scars. Love Greta.
Lipstick: No, it does not contain more than trace amounts of lead, see Snopes https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/easily-lead/ It’s a myth that lipstick contains dangerous levels of lead (and everything you eat or use contains trace amounts of lead, so you can’t expect zero lead anywhere). This is of course for makeup approved by the FDA / European consumer protection agency / whatever your country’s equivalent is. Major makeup brands are safe, some of the stuff you buy on Wish for $0.50 might not be because it might not be tested.
Beating children has been illegal in Sweden since 1979. From my experience teaching in both the US and Sweden, I’d say Swedish kids and young adults are far more independent, willing to question authority, and less sheltered than American kids. I’m not surprised someone like Greta is Swedish (of course, having a rich and famous mother probably helped a bit initially, but overall it’s her own doing).
The powers that be are working full time to create the oficial reality that suits their interests. In this case, they are trying aas hard as they can to demolish Thunberg’s reputation. But it doesn’t look like their paternalistic, ableist, and it seems also pervy shit will become hegemonic this time.
“They bark, therefore we’re riding”.

Greta Thunberg seems to be the bold, fearless, idiosyncratic spiritual godchild of the fictional Swedish character Pippi Longstocking, beloved by children the world over.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pippi_Longstocking
Sorry about that garbage post; it was a failed illustration of Ms. Longstocking. The editing function failed to function. David F., please delete that post.
We need some kind of SJW Krampus to go around and tan the hides of creepy middle aged men when they do creepy shit like this. Sadly they’d probably enjoy it.
@Dreamer
Here’s the EPA report from a few years back. It is defitinely possible to find lead free lipsticks, just takes some looking around. But most of the larger brands do contain lead. I put some other links in the previous thread I linked above.
I really hope someone is helping out with her Twitter account, because I dread to think what her mentions must look like most days.
@Kat
So Pippi Longstocking is Swedish Superman? I mean, if I had had boil the concept of Superman down to its essence it would be “What if the most powerful person in the world was also the most moral?”
Two notes about spanking:
One, being spanked did not teach me “respect” or “not to do it again” (I don’t even remember what I did), or any of the other crap that its proponents claim.
It taught me two things:
1. People with more power than me can hurt me with impunity.
2. People who say they love me will deliberately hurt me.
Second, there’s the familiar response any time the issue of “physical discipline” (i.e., child abuse) comes up. Some jackhole proclaims “I don’t see what the big deal is. My parents beat the hell out of me and I turned out okay.”
Someone who thinks child abuse is not a “big deal” probably did not turn out okay.
@Allandrel
I think it’s pretty appalling that so many people think child abuse is ok. If spanking your spouse (without consent) is spousal abuse (and it is), then I don’t see why spanking your child should be considered any differently. It’s still abuse, but shocking is legal in every state (and in some states is used in elementary schools).
Then again, I imagine many child abuse proponents also beat their spouses.
@Dreamer
Not very much. Its about 1 part-per-million. If you’re a heavy lipstick user, you might ingest 87mg of lipstick a day, which would be 87ng of lead.
Drinking water limits are in the parts-per-billion range (EPA tapwater limit 15ppb, FDA bottled water limit 5ppb), which means a litre of water might contain several micrograms of lead, more than ten times the amount in that daily dose of lipstick. You’re probably drinking more than one litre of water a day, too.
Linky to my last comment on this, and the thread which started it.
It’s telling that snide condescension is all these people can muster against Greta. It’s the standard play when they can’t impugn character: they accuse people of not being able to think for themselves. Hence Greta cannot have come to these conclusions on her own, it has to be some shadowy cabal of (((leftists))) that brainwashed her poor “mentally ill” mind to be terrified of the global climate change all around us. This is the same shit they pulled with the Parkland kids, David Hogg and Emma Gonzalez in particular.
In addition to this notion of being patronizing, insulting and condescending all at once, there’s also a gaslighting element where these assholes are demanding we not believe what’s happening right in front of us. I don’t know Greta’s story myself, but I’d imagine that she experienced something personal with respect to climate change that set her on this crusade. Even if not, the images of extreme weather events alone should sway anybody that this is not normal.
But I don’t think their usual tack of condescension is going to work with Greta Thunberg, because she is just that remarkably genuine in her convictions. It’s clear she’d rather be doing anything else than needling lawmakers not to trash the planet for her generation. If there’s anything disheartening, it’s the centrist libs glomming on to her when they’re the exact people she told off. Yeah, I’m talking about you, Justin Trudeau, you jackass.
@Naglfar:
In Canada an equally relevant reference would probably be asbestos. The asbestos industry in Canada is sufficiently well-connected and money-making that they’ve actively distorted research and worked to get themselves special favour in international trade deals.
In the general ‘climate change’ sense…
How old are some of the people complaining about Thunberg? I’m old enough to remember acid rain becoming a big thing in the 1970s, with places literally covering up statues to protect them, and Reagan and Pierre Trudeau coming together to start working on treaties and solutions to this in the early 1980s. I’ve seen the treaties and work on acid rain across the Canada/U.S. border described as proof that we could actually tackle climate change if there were the political will for it: we managed a smaller scale of similar industrial cleanup within the lifetimes of a lot of the politicians currently in office.
@Katamount
The fact that they accuse the left of brainwashing and being unable to think for themselves is just the IMAX-level projection going up again. There is no group more brainwashed and unable to think for themselves than conservatives that reject science in favor of everything their leaders say.
I honestly don’t know how they convince themselves of that stuff. I think if I watched Fox News for long periods of time all I’d get is angry. That happens whenever I have to watch clips of it.
@Naglfar
If I had to wager a guess, it’s a combination of just-world fallacy, confirmation bias and just plain selfishness. I’ve seen my fair share of climate denier comment posts, and especially in a petro-state like Canada, everything swirls around concern trolling about the beloved economy. Their comfort in their employment (assuming they haven’t retired) matters more than the health of the planet, which to them is something far too abstract to imagine.
Only problem is that it’s becoming less and less abstract every day for those insulated from its effects. The global south has been living with this for years.
@Allandrel
Understatement of the year. Abuse turns people violent. I’m still working my way out of this sort of behavior. Parents, authority figures and abusers in general think violence is ok, until the victim fights back. My dad was quite surprised and offended when I gave him the beatdown he had been asking for his whole life, just before I turned 15. Same with my abusive older brother.
Now I don’t actively pursue violence, but I do enjoy every chance to get the jump on an abuser. I believe I’m getting out of it, after nearly two years of therapy, but in the meantime I gotta turn it into something “productive” (and yes, I know it might not exactly be productive strictly speaking, but at the very least the people on the receiving end are always violent abusers).
I still remember the day my mom said, “I don’t think you were scarred for life” because of the “physical discipline” she and my dad exercised. We were in a restaurant, but being in public didn’t stop me from saying, “When I was 3 or 4 years old, Dad held me down on the kitchen floor and spooned lima beans into my mouth because I wasn’t eating them voluntarily. You were there and didn’t stop him.”
She was shocked to learn I remembered that, and my expression undoubtedly told her I remembered a lot of other things, too.
I still don’t like lima beans, but since I’m now an adult, I don’t have to eat them if I don’t want to, and NOBODY can make me.
Not only are they hoping to kick-start the End of Days, they think God will reward them for it. They believe the entire purpose of the world is to end in fire and that there is no holier mission than bringing that about.
They hate the world, they hate all other people besides themselves, and I suspect that on some level they hate themselves too. I don’t understand how anyone can look around at this world of ours and say “It’s all gotta go,” and call that mindset holiness.
As a person diagnosed on the high functioning end of the autistic spectrum: I will always…. ALWAYS…..loath and despise any people group of people who believe and continue to propagate the lie and psudoscience notion that Vaccines cause autism. It’s willfully, criminal ignorance and ableism that tacitly implies that it’s better for children to die of terrible, horrible, septic, debilitating, crippling or life threatening diseases that can be easily treated or inoculated against than to be autistic.
The additional implication however that autistic can’t actually have any ideological values, ideas, thoughts or beliefs all their own is another additional bit of ablest condescension that also is disgusting against special needs people. Not to mention hypocritical given the nonsense they try to brainwash their children with.
Both my parents grew up in abusive home.
My mum was beaten with a carpet beater. To this day she can remember the pattern it left on her thighs.
According to my gran hitting a child with an implement is necessary, because hands are for love and the kid isn’t supposed to associate the hands with discipline.
Barf.
Add to that the gas lighting and strict religious upbringing and it is no wonder my mum contemplated suicide at the ripe old age of 7.
My dad’s parents especially his mother, were emotionally abusive. They wouldn’t get angry. Just disappointed.
There was one aspect of physical abuse that royally fucked up my dad.
He always had to finish his plate. And if he or one of his siblings asked for a smaller serving because they weren’t that hungry? They got an extra large serving instead.
My dad would return home from school around 1pm. And very often he would still sit in front of his lunch plate by the time it was dinner. My dad was a tiny child. He just couldn’t eat that much.
To this day there are phrases that when my dad hears them he just can’t eat anymore for a few hours, no matter how hungry he is. He just can’t.
My parents structured their parenting around looking at what their parents would do in any given situation and then doing the complete opposite.
And since my parents were big on allowing me bodily autonomy, having had none as a kid themselves, this led to spectacular rows. And me not being allowed to stay alone with my grandparents.
I had long standing feud with my maternal grandfather. He insisted on getting a hug and a kiss as a greeting. To the point of trying to pull me in.
When I was little he told my mum ‘Make her!’ my mum told him to go fuck himself.
When I got older he tried to guilt trip me. ‘You’ll be sorry when I’m gone!’
Whelp, he’s been gone for 15+ years and I’m still not sorry.
I might mention that I’m autistic and extremely touch averse.
The only people on the planet allowed to hug me are my parents. Nobody else.
