UPDATE: Now there has been a second mass shooting in less than 24 hours, In Dayton Ohio, leaving nine dead. Shooter was wearing body armor.
Another mass shooter, this time in and around a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. Reliable information is hard to come by at this early stage but we know that the shooting suspect is in custody and that there have been 20 fatalities.
The shooter left behind a manifesto, posted shortly before the shooting on 8chan. He said he was inspired by the Christchurch shooter, and declared that his attack was “a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas.”
Post your thoughts and any reliable information you have in the thread below. No trolls.
UPDATE: Updated with # of fatalities and a few changes in wording about the manifesto allegedly written by the shooter.
UPDATE 2: Updated with news of the Dayton shooting and to make clear that the el paso manifesto has been definitively tied to the alleged shooter.
gee, I wonder if the N.R.A. and the trumpanzees still have any “thoughts and prayers” left
they won’t actually, y’know, DO ANYTHING, of course, but short of that, “total support”
If only we knew how the shooter became radicalised. I guess it’ll remain forever a mystery.

It is scary to me that people are so habituated to these shootings. When Sandy Hook happened in 2012, it was all anyone talked about for weeks, and we vowed to do better. Now, I look at news of another shooting and feel like “oh, another shooting” then move on because there’s no time to grieve and it’s a regular occurrence now.
Now, let’s watch the “pro-life” and “family values” conservatives not give a fuck about the innocent lives killed in this shooting or the families destroyed.
Only Native Americans surely have a legitimate beef about Hispanic settlement in Texas. Then the Hispanic Texans have dibs on the place ahead of Anglos, allowed in as immigrants by Mexico, and who then rebelled at least in part due to Mexico trying to abolish slavery. Strange sort of ‘freedom fighters’ that established the Republic of Texas…
But both sides, cried the Right.
I guess the good guy with a gun was held up in traffic. /s
I live on the other side of the planet and I’m sick of seeing these stories.
Hello again all, from the west side of Chicago.
Rather bad circumstance to say hola, again. Been meaning to, we’ve all been reading along here. Friends and I here, who have come over for drinks. Which we are all trying to cut back on. Saw this? I am thanking myself for picking up that extra six pack.
Another good friend of ours is from El Paso, and we are thinking of sending an email to ask if all are ok, – but how in the world do you even do that?
And what if (relatives there) are not ok?
They may be handling other communication also, so maybe don’t clog that up either?
What in the world would you even say? Did grandma there get shot down at the Wal Mart? And even a simple “Is everyone OK?” seems rather weird to say.
We are scared for our friend 🙁
And heartbroken that this keeps happening.
I’m heartsick. And angry. I don’t want to hear any of that “good guy with a gun” crap. My state has some of the most lax gun laws in this country – they’re barely guidelines. My governor recently bemoaned that Texans weren’t buying enough guns because New Mexico was beating us in that particular “competition.”
Don’t blame the victims or the bystanders for not shooting back, governor. Show some real Texas courage and do something more powerful than “thoughts and prayers.”
There’s a grim part of me wondering if that particular Walmart sold firearms and ammo…
@Z&T:
Something simple like “We heard about the shooting and we’re thinking about you. We hope you’re ok” can do wonders. And it doesn’t demand a response from them, in case they’re overwhelmed.
@VP:
Let me guess: the governor receives a lot of money from the NRA?
@Moggie
He has an “A”/100% approval rating from the NRA, too.
Governor Greg Abbot is a piece of shit, and predictably, in his press conference, offered nothing but prayers. No chance in fucking hell of new gun control legislation going through in TX.
@ Kevin
You are right. There were Hispanics living around El Paso for a hundred years (more or less) before the first Anglos showed up.
When I was teaching an outreach class at the archaeology lab where I worked, I used to ask kids how long they thought people had been living in what is now San Antonio. Almost always they came up with a more or less accurate date for the arrival of the Spanish. They always seemed a little astonished that we know for sure that people lived here for a minimum of 10 thousand years, and almost certainly long before that. When I said “people” they heard “European”.
@Victorious Parasol:
Fellow Texan here. The part of Governor Gaggit’s press conference I saw didn’t mention the “thoughts/prayers” garbage but did cover his “legislative approaches” (yes, these are scare quotes in this case), which consisted of lots of “hearings” & nothing substantive.
Oh, and he also shat out the usual “more should be done re mental health” crap. Big surprise.
Words cannot convey how much I despise that waste of carbon.
@Naglfar
Under this presidency it is even worse than nothing considering Trump and co are radicalizing these terrorists into action.
I wonder if this guy was an incel too? His mugshot shows a 21-year-old man who already looks like an embittered 40-something:
@ObSidJag
Fixed that for him. Virtually every one of these fuckers has form for one or both of those.
Does anyone need brain bleach? I have more guinea pigs.

Aw. The piggie in a blanket looks like my dear, departed Phillip. Thank you, wwth, for the best kind of brain bleach.
Pyxxxie
Oh look pyxxxie here to tell us how gun control doesn’t work and not listen to anyone sources because of “Russian mafia”
Not really off-topic….
There’s coal miners striking and blocking the railroad tracks…
in Harlan County, Kentucky. What went around has come around again….
Now, while I have really enjoyed my time as a mammotheer… I’m moving back to the upper paleolithic. Im’a try to land a few centuries before we invented metal weapons….
@ Pyxxxie:
please, we don’t need that now. comments policy
GUINEA PIGS!!!!!!
@Pyxxxie: NO
Aside from it being a comments policy violation, don’t say things like that, ever. Not even as a joke. Actually, it’s worse if it’s a joke, because you’re spreading horrible shit on purpose while *knowing* that it’s wrong to do so.
