Are we good? Music sharing Sunday

Modified screenshot from Eleanor Friedberger’s Are We Good video

By David Futrelle

It’s Sunday, so I thought I’d take a break from the terrible and share some good, in the form of some music I’ve been enjoying a lot lately.

First, some videos, then a Spotify playlist featuring these songs and many others. In the case of Nadine Shah, it’s a different song b/c she doesn’t have a video for the song in my playlist. But it’s no loss; the replacement is just as good.

Oh, and the lyrics for one of these songs are based on text messages sent by the artist to her friends. Which results in a a lot of non sequitur surrealism. But which song?

Anyway, consider this an open thread. Share your current music favorites in the comments below!

And here’s the playlist:

We Hunted the Mammoth is independent and ad-free, and relies entirely on readers like you for its survival. If you appreciate our work, please send a few bucks our way! Thanks!

I have pretty eclectic taste where music is concerned: everything from Jordi Savall, Jill Tracy, Lisa Gerrard, Loreena McKennitt to Joe Bonamassa, early Genesis, etc.

Lots of soundtracks &, oh, yeah Tuva throat singing, pretty much anything that causes me to go, “Wow, that just raised the hair on my arms!”

And I bought some cds off amazon today – old rocker stuff, and took a risk with an early Status Quo when they were psychedelic, not 3 chord tedium.

@Makroth, I was going to link to The Colour out of Space, so I’m glad I checked your links first. I hadn’t heard of Ningen Isu until youtube recommended them to me recently; never knew how much I needed Japanese grandad metal until I heard it!

Dear Lord, doesn’t Charlotte Gainsbourg age?! ?

I haven’t been listening to much new music recently, but here’s a couple of random tracks from the last few days:

Anita Lane: she’s only put out a couple of albums, but that voice…

Some old-school EBM…

… and some old-school Goth… such pretty, pretty boys! ?

… and some more recent (relatively speaking) Goth:

Are you sensing a pattern? ?

Last day of Pride, so I’m listening to this again:

Thinking of all my friends who marched this month and in other months, those who were able to get married at last, those who didn’t live long enough to see marriage equality become a reality, and those who fight to maintain the right to marry.

In a few weeks, it will be 50 years since the Apollo 11 moon landing. This makes me feel very old, since I remember watching it. I expect I’ll be playing this track quite a lot this month:

Listened to it on the radio. Dad taped the actual landing – I’ve got the tape somewhere. Doubt it’ll still play, it’s rather old. 😛

I love Sulli’s new song! Not sure how I feel about her using dissociative identities as a metaphor in the MV though. It would be one thing if she experiences that herself, but she’s never said as much, so I really don’t like her using it as a rhetorical device. I’m waiting to see if she clears it up in an interview.

Lovely song though. Have you listened to the b-sides? Absolutely ethereal.

And now I’m noticing that a lot of the songs in that list were songs I’ve been listening to, so now I’m thinking it’s just the you tube algorithm feeding me what I want. Never mind, then.

If you grew up in Canada in the ’70s it was hard to avoid the Irish Rovers. Their show ran for 7 years on CBC. But I’d never heard this late ’80s cut before a few days ago. It almost sounds like a Spirit of the West song.

And speaking of Spirit of the West, here’s their classic “Save This House.” Unfortunately singer John Mann was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s several years ago, and drummer Vince Ditrich has been suffering from kidney failure for several years, leading to the band’s demise.

And here’s the Stranglers on the Dutch show Toppop in 1977, deciding to show their displeasure at having to mime “No More Heroes.”

I’ve been throughly enjoying the new Specials album Encore (from february) – their first with new material since ’98.

Madness’ The Liberty of Norton Folgate from some years back now is also absolutely brilliant. (And has a great duet with Rhoda Dakar from the Bodysnatchers who’s also sung with The Specials.)
