Snot-nosed Nazis: A belated weekend open thread

By David Futrelle

Sorry I’ve been AWOL for a couple of days; I’ve been taking care of some personal stuff (nothing dramatic, just very time-consuming). But there’s so much going on in the world I thought I’d put up an open thread.

Talk about Trump’s shittiness, the shutdown, the dueling Fyre Festival documentaries, the blizzard here in the US, or maybe those snot-nosed racist high school students harassing Native American elder Nathan Phillips, a veteran conducting a ceremony to honor the war dead in DC

On that last point, here are some videos; watch only if you are ready to be enraged. The students, from a Catholic high school, were in DC for the “March for Life,” evidently ran into Phillips by chance, and decided to harass him for being Native American, I guess.

https://twitter.com/lulu_says2/status/1086552871674368001

On a somewhat lighter note, there was the whole Ben Shapiro/Baby Hitler thing. Here are several , er, enhanced versions of his remarks at the March for Life on the classic time-travel quandary — “would you kill Hitler when he was a baby?”

Despite Ben’s qualms about killing baby Hitler, he doesn’t actually give a shit about babies and other civilians from enemy countries killed in wars.

In other news:

A bit unrelated to our Troll but incredibly relevant to the opening post I have a link about Young man in question.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/young-man-d-c-march-video-denounces-outright-lies-about-n960801?cid=sm_npd_nn_tw_ma

“I believed that by remaining motionless and calm, I was helping to diffuse the situation,” he said. “I realized everyone had cameras and that perhaps a group of adults was trying to provoke a group of teenagers into a larger conflict. I said a silent prayer that the situation would not get out of hand.”

Sandmann, who said he has received death threats, strongly disputed characterizations that he is a racist, saying: “I am mortified that so many people have come to believe something that did not happen — that students from my school were chanting or acting in a racist fashion toward African Americans or Native Americans.”

“I did not do that, do not have hateful feelings in my heart, and did not witness any of my classmates doing that,” he said, adding: “I have read that Mr. Phillips is a veteran of the United States Marines. I thank him for his service and am grateful to anyone who puts on the uniform to defend our nation. If anyone has earned the right to speak freely, it is a U.S. Marine veteran.”

Any thoughts on his words?

Like a lot of dead authors, and some living ones, he’s now a brand name for stuff written by others.

I’ve long suspected that of James Patterson. The quality of his newer stuff, much of which has a coauthor, does not match the quality of his older stuff, and not for the better.

Scildfreja Unnyðnes says:

This is a lark for you, you say. Entertainment. And yet you’ve also said that we basically don’t matter to you. What’s entertaining about it if we don’t matter and you don’t care what we say?

I imagine it’s similar to the thrill a former friend claimed to experience when he got the neighbor’s cats to jump by shooting them with a BB gun.

you and the rest of your coven – Desperate Ambrose

That doesn’t so much speak for itself, as drop its trousers and wave its willy. If you think you’re giving a good impression of
Catholics, Desperate Ambrose, you’re mistaken.

On the issue of the Catholic Church’s treatment of indigenous peoples in the Americas, it was of course the Pope himself who gave his blessing to their subjection by Spain and Portugal. And while there were examples of Catholic priests who defended them against the worst abuses, most were quite happy to own slaves (both indigenous and imported from Africa), and as late as 1866 Pius IX affirmed that subject to certain conditions, it was not against “divine law” for slaves to be held, bought and sold.

Cult of Dusty who is an anti-alt-right Youtubers thinks the story as it has been reported in the media is “bullshit”.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVvpVRJ-NH4

Hard to say how thorough Dustys own research was.

Many early reports gave the impression the school boys walked up to him and surrounded him, but Mr Phillips himself confirms there was a conflict between the catholic school kids and a group of black youth and that he tried to put himself between them. He clearly says the kids acted hostile but can we take his word for it? Didn´t he also say they blocked his retreat which some other videos show clearly is not the case, there is no one behind him? Even if the kid directly in front of him is confronting him with hostility, can we be sure the entire group is? From what we see in the videos, it is not obvious the kids further back are particularly focused on Phillips. Did they really chant “build the wall” at him? I don´t think we hear that in the videos at least.

At any rate, the media seem to have jumped on the story without checking the context very much first, though to be fair media outlets themselves probably didn´t forsee how huge it would be. It is after all just private individuals, minors or young adults, doing nothing illegal in the video, and yet it becomes the most shared news items in many newspapers, that does not seem proportional.

Mish of the Catlady Ascendancy

@Moggie

That Amnesia Day video is excellent! I especially liked the acknowledgement that #changethedate is mostly symbolic rather than structural (but still necessary). At least there’s more momentum every year for change. And the govt is clearly rattled.

@everyone

The Donkey Kong stream has been PHENOMENAL. And you know what? I haven’t felt this purely happy about something for a long time!

@new nazi apologist

checking the context very much first,

There is no context that makes wearing a MAGA hat acceptable. There is no context that makes going to a ‘March for Life’ acceptable. There is no context that makes any of the behaviour shown by the people wearing that hat acceptable.
There is no reason to ever treat anyone wearing that hat as anything other than the despicable garbage they proclaim themselves to be when they put on a symbol of fascist bigotry. For any reason. And wanting to do so puts you, yes you, on the side of fascism, and makes you, yes you a vile quisling at best. It’s not a good look.

doing nothing illegal

Really? And in any case, the fact that the U.S. has shitty legal protections for ethnic minorities (among many other groups) has fuckall to do with whether the Trump Jugend there are racist stains on the earth.

@tim gueguen:

@Cat Mara the scary thing about Trigger Warning is that it’s written by a ghost. William W. Johnstone died in 2004. Like a lot of dead authors, and some living ones, he’s now a brand name for stuff written by others. In this case the real author is his niece J.A. Johnstone. Apparently 25 different books were released under his name in 2018.

Yes, that was the background information I was alluding to in my original post. It’s kind of sad how it’s his niece who’s carrying on his legacy, given the amount of misogyny on display

The Donkey Kong stream was beautiful. It’s also nice to see Graham Linehan getting dunked on on Twitter. Donkey Kong is now a trans icon.

@Podkayne Lives

They reported her as Israeli because that was her passport. In fairness to the random man on Twitter (who probably doesn’t deserve such concern) I did see a few people who didn’t realize that ‘Aiia Maasarwe’ isn’t a Jewish name in Israel jump onto threads to make comments about people caring about this instead of Gaza, apparently unaware that the young woman was herself Palestinian as well as Israeli.

Sorry, I’m not sure you got what I was saying. I probs wasn’t clear enough.
But yes, it’s heartbreaking.

…and yet it becomes the most shared news items in many newspapers, that does not seem proportional.

I think this Slate article sums it up for me:

But I think the real reason the clip has spread is simpler: It’s the kid’s face. The face of self-satisfaction and certitude, of edginess expressed as cruelty. The face remains almost completely still as his peers hoot in awed delight at his bravado. The face is both punchable and untouchable.

Anyone who knew the popular white boys in high school recognized it: the confident gaze, the eyes twinkling with menace, the smirk. The face of a boy who is not as smart as he thinks he is, but is exactly as powerful. The face that sneers, “What? I’m just standing here,” if you flinch or cry or lash out. The face knows that no matter how you react, it wins.

Yes, but what I´m questioning is should this really be the top story in Indy100 for example when no public figures are involved and it is not even that clear what really happened.

Unlike Dusty, I actually think Sandmann was probably confronting Phillips intentionally and that he could have just taken a few steps back to let him pass on his way, but it´s much less clear to me that this is the case for most of the other students. To me, they just seem to be standing there, they were chanting, so they start chanting ey-ey-ey to the rythm of the drum. Most of them just seem to be looking curiously at the situation to see what´s going to happen.

I don´t think that if a private individual is against abortion and for Trump then it is automatically, no matter what the facts are, OK to hang them out for a world audience with all the predictable consequences of threats and harrassment and so on, no.

Okay I want to be very clear obviously this is only a small sect I don’t know how small but I would be shocked if they were more than(and sure this is a number I’m pulling out of my ass but it’s judging from my lived experiences like 10%) of actual black Jews.

But the sect called black Israelites I am referring to, anyone who has ever lived or spent a reasonable amount of time in Harlem at least in the last 20 years, I don’t know before that I’m only 34 LOL, but they are a virulent group of intensely hateful bigots of every sort.

They are essentially MAGA people who just happen to be black and hate white people(and I mean truly hate them) and before I started literally just completely ignoring them, they used to constantly get into these shouting arguments with me on the corner of 125th Street and Saint Nicholas near Popeye’s because apparently my father is a horrific race traitor and I can redeem his horrible sin marrying a white woman if I marry a black Israelite and serve and obey them like women were meant to do instead of being the horribly depraved slut(that is a direct quote of course LOL) that I am(and of course the only reason I am a horribly depraved slut, meaning I like polyamory and BDSM Etc( and I don’t care what race the guy is as long as he respects me and treats me right. OMG the horror! /s) is because the white man forced me to somehow apparently. Oh my God you can imagine all sorts of essentially MRA talking points but somehow blacker LOL. Feminazi, cultural Marxism, etc. I mean you’ll hit a bingo talking to them.)

Like they’ve always really disturbed me because maybe it’s a result of my naivete but I just don’t understand how black people can be such incredible bigots and oppress others, considering how intensely we’ve been oppressed and honestly straight-up abused in America as minorities forever we know how it feels. So how can we be homophobic and stuff? Because that’s been one of my goals in a way. If we’re honest the black male community thats older say over 45 has a large problem with homophobia, I would say even worse then the white male community which has their own problems which are many and varied for example you very rarely see one of those Mass shooters being a black dude.

So back when I was having addiction problems I would meet people and not tell them until we were friends that I was bisexual and then just keep picking at them. And then after I tell them I am bisexual I’m like, you like me and you think I’m awesome so what is your actual problem with people loving your own gender using logical arguments and being friendly. And out of 17 times in about a decade I was able to convince 14 people even if picturing a dick in their ass repulses them there is nothing morally wrong or against nature or God with loving someone of your own gender instead of vice versa which I consider an accomplishment.

Like seriously some of those people was real borderline gay bashers, in their youth one or two were not borderline they actually did it once or twice and now they’re just like oh well they’re adults I think it’s kind of icky as long as I don’t have to see them fucking I don’t care anymore. Firstly sure it’d be nice to get more than that but in my opinion that’s 10 times better than their original viewpoint. Secondly I mean to a point that’s immature as hell, icky lol? But again IMO, it’s a much better view point than they originally held so I can live with it.

Yeah I know there’s a small amount of danger inputting your email just right out there but like I’ve said before I don’t really do technology. I honestly don’t remember the last time I sent an email unless it was literally the only way I could contact someone. I don’t do social media either like I have a Facebook account because my friend literally made it for me and said I had to have it LOL and I was like fine but I think I posted less than 10 things in about six or seven years.

Considering what I just said like seriously I have no internet presence or barely even a credit score like I don’t pay almost any bills or even use banks. So aside from idiots possibly harassing me is there any real danger that I’m not aware of? I may get a single email that’s not spam once a month. Even thats uncommon. I would say in a year excluding holidays and birthday type things from people far away I might get half a dozen emails.

So if worst came to worst and MRA assholes or any other group saw my email and start harassing me I would just erase it or I don’t know if you can erase them just delete it then and move on. But I know because of my friend in Australia that with three stamps a dollar 15 worth of postage I can send an envelope of one ounce anywhere in the world and this would not weigh more than one ounce. I sent her two of them so far.

So theoretically if you see the picture and you would like me to send it to I don’t know like a store in your name I’ve done that a couple times at the bodega on the corner maybe you could do the same thing assuming they have bodegas or something like in Alaska I I’m now curious do they have bodegas in Alaska LOL?

But someone needs to tell me how to put the picture here please. Like explain it very very basically cuz I’m bad at this stuff please. Like WWTH, you are awesome and you posted a picture so you must know how. Are you good at explaining that stuff someone who is essentially a Luddite LOL. Seriously though, I need it explained to me assuming I know literally nothing. Some people aren’t good at that.

Well since I put the time into making the gift I at least want to make the picture so you can see it and it can be yours in spirit because it’s the thought that counts. So absolutely anybody at all if you don’t mind, can you please explain how I can put a picture here in the comment? Anyway it is icy cold here in NYC and I will be home in like 2 hours and then I will make that final comment that has bullet points and politely phrased one or two sentence questions.

I think I have only have at most 6 now. After rereading everything I realized a lot of my 1001 questions have been answered at least partially if not fully. I think you said that WWTH and Catalpa, and you were right. I was emotional and missing things at some point. Anyway I’m going to finish the blunt I’m smoking and get on the train. Everyone have a lovely day tomorrow and I hope you all had a lovely weekend also. XOXO Katie

“I believed that by remaining motionless and calm, I was helping to diffuse the situation,” he said. “I realized everyone had cameras and that perhaps a group of adults was trying to provoke a group of teenagers into a larger conflict. I said a silent prayer that the situation would not get out of hand.”

Ah, the silent prayer… the nap people of faith take whenever action is needed and appropriate. Must have been one heck of a fun one too… I mean, I don’t know many Catholics who smirk like that when praying.

Sandmann, who said he has received death threats, strongly disputed characterizations that he is a racist, saying: “I am mortified that so many people have come to believe something that did not happen — that students from my school were chanting or acting in a racist fashion toward African Americans or Native Americans.”

Oh, good that he says that he isn’t racist. I mean… it’s a bit hard to notice with all the racism going on in that video. Like, he does know what those hats stand for, right?

“I did not do that, do not have hateful feelings in my heart, and did not witness any of my classmates doing that,” he said, adding: “I have read that Mr. Phillips is a veteran of the United States Marines. I thank him for his service and am grateful to anyone who puts on the uniform to defend our nation. If anyone has earned the right to speak freely, it is a U.S. Marine veteran.

Ok, seriously, am I the only one who had a parent that told him “people don’t know nor care what’s ‘in your heart’. What matters is what you do!”. Like… these people know that manslaughter is a crime as well, right? It was the same when that tiki-torch nazi was identified and claimed “I’m not the angry nazi that you see! That isn’t really ME!”. Well, too bad your clone from the Negaverse showed up, but I’m sure you can catch them and we will bring them to justice. Until then we have to assume that you are you
