Sorry I’ve been AWOL for a couple of days; I’ve been taking care of some personal stuff (nothing dramatic, just very time-consuming). But there’s so much going on in the world I thought I’d put up an open thread.
Talk about Trump’s shittiness, the shutdown, the dueling Fyre Festival documentaries, the blizzard here in the US, or maybe those snot-nosed racist high school students harassing Native American elder Nathan Phillips, a veteran conducting a ceremony to honor the war dead in DC
On that last point, here are some videos; watch only if you are ready to be enraged. The students, from a Catholic high school, were in DC for the “March for Life,” evidently ran into Phillips by chance, and decided to harass him for being Native American, I guess.
On a somewhat lighter note, there was the whole Ben Shapiro/Baby Hitler thing. Here are several , er, enhanced versions of his remarks at the March for Life on the classic time-travel quandary — “would you kill Hitler when he was a baby?”
Despite Ben’s qualms about killing baby Hitler, he doesn’t actually give a shit about babies and other civilians from enemy countries killed in wars.

@dr. ej:
Hail Sobek! Apparently, Graham Linehan isn’t happy about this. Good!
Why… is Ambrose… still… here………
I love the all-caps “LESBIAN,” as if the litany of sins listed for the other congresswomen was all just a preamble to that most shocking affront.
Maybe they think LESBIAN is an acronym? What would it stand for?
@Desperate Ambrose
“ADDENDUM: I’m not at all sure that the motives of Rome and the motives of the conquistadors were one and the same.”
So? The motives of Waffen-SS officers and the motives of Nazi bureaucrats were not one and the same, but they were both Nazis and both scum.
How, pray tell, is motive even relevant, with the magnitude of historical and ongoing crimes we’re talking about here?
I thought Ambrose had a real
dollperson to go home to.Black Israelites are a hate group.
A lot of people who don’t live in the New York area, may not know this, but they are homophobic, Antisemetic, , racist, sexist deplorables who set up stands in streets in places like New York City, Jersey City and Newark to shout their viscoise accusations, while trying to foment not just bigotry, but violence against anyone not them.
Does that seem familiar to anyone who reads this blog? That’s because they are part of the manosphere as well, regularly demonizing women who work outside the home, or who hold opinions independent of their husbands’
I feel no more sympathy for them than I do for your average racecel, or whatever non-white incels have decided to call themselves today
To characterize them as a” minority group” and to leave that context out is disingenuous to characterize the boys going out of their way to harrass them (and suggesting that it was due to their minority status) is essentially a dishonest narrative.
That the boys from a catholic school criticized the Black Israelis for being homophobic gives me a smidgeon of hope for the future -even if their stance against homophobia was purely situational, 15 or so years ago, the thought that homophobia should be denounced would not have occurred to a group of Catholic teens.
Opposing hatemongers is what I’d expect us all decent people to support
That said, the school boys’ treatment of Philip is horrendous. Just lets not pretend that’s equivilent.
As for the one most prominent boy with the Maga hat “smugly staring”, looking at his face, I suspect he’s high. If you watch the full video, one of the Black Israelus even says he could tell the boys had been smoking the reefer.
The boy’s smiling, it’s difficult to tell for sure if that was a smug, condescending or supercilious expression or whether he was getting into the drumming. One thing I know about teenaged boys- they think drums are the coolest
I don’t blame people for presuming that he’s racist because, well, MAGA HAT, but can we give even Maga hat wearers some slack for knee-jerk interpretations of their non-verbal facial expressions?
Now, I suppose I’ll be criticized for not understanding the depth of power imbalance here. That could be true, but blacks being against other disenpowered minorities and gender expressions while using religion to back up their hatred, will never get sympathy from me.
I’m not able to edit my comments anymore. Is this a new feature, or a bug?
Mr Phillips was intimidated, but Hexum7, who was not there, has decided he was mistaken. Cool.
Moggie that isn’t what I wrote. I didn’t suggest that Phillips was not intimidated. In fact, the word I used to describe how he was treated was “horrendous”
@ hexum
What’s the evidence they did that?
I don’t want to appear sceptical, but it seems Covington is hardly a bastion of gay rights. And, bearing in mind the school’s former treatment of gay students, I’d have thought it there’s one thing their chaperones would have stopped, it would be sticking up for gay people.
If there is any evidence for such a stance, would you mind directing me to it? Always happy to be proven wrong.
can we give even MAGA hat wearers some slack
Er, I’m going to have to go with, no,
@DesparateAmbrose
[re: the Gillette thread]
“…you and the rest of your coven had no interest in anything resembling a discussion.”
This is an unfounded assertion. As other commenters have pointed out to you numerous times, you claimed a discussion about toxic masculinity must have an operable definition of the concept. Indeed several operable definitions, concrete enough for analysis of thoughts, ideas, and actions, were advanced in the comments on that thread quite clearly — yet you ignored them, especially when you seemed to regard the voices advancing them as female.
The evidence is all still there, in the comments to that post.
CripDyke stated this adeptly, slamming home the point perfectly.
Your level of trollery is truly astonishing.
Oh…wait….maybe none of this is true because I’m NOT REAL!
@Alan and other Invasion of Britain thinkers
As you continue to think through the Operational Sea Lion stuff, you may also find helpful some of the scholarship on the overall history of amphibious operations and strategy, particular the history of *defense* against amphibious invasion. Particularly useful might be Theodore Gatchel’s At the Water’s Edge: Defending Against the Modern Amphibious Assault (Annapolis: Naval Institute Press, 1996; pbk. ed. pub. in 2013).
To wit, when you write your version, part of what might shape your opinion of how it turns is could be not just German capabilities and plans of course, nor just British capabilities but what choices you have the British make in the context of the perennial choices defenders face in amphibious invasion situations (e.g. sea defense, beach defense, or mobile defense).
And any contingency would still be very inviting to bring in women’s services, particularly the ATS. I’d also look into the scholarship on the real capabilities of the Home Guard.
Oh, DumbAss is back.
No, you got your ass kicked. Publicly and repeatedly.
We were discussing toxic masculinity. Got that definition for us yet, or are you just going to whine and throw more feeble insults before slinking off in shame again?
Also is there any evidence that the boy is “high”? are you really want to believe this Black Isrelite hate group when they were arguing already with the boys? of course they will try to say something like “he is high” to make him look bad.
Don’t believe them when it is much more likely that he is smiling because he thinks he is superior to Nate and other native Americans.
Stop making excuses for racists.
Okay, so a little bit of positivity: Hbomberguy is on Twitch doing a charity longrun of 101% completion of Donkey Kong 64 for Mermaids after Glinner got their charity lottery money taken away (unsure of whether or not said rescinding of funds is permanent or not) and it’s got or had AOC, Chelsea Manning, Mara Wilson, Protomagicalgirl, and pretty much most of left and trans twitter. It’s already raised 1.5 times more than the original amount of the charity lottery, and still is going strong. Go there and donate to a good cause! And maybe watch some Kongs grab collectibles. And the best part? A guest needed a wheelchair, and that fundraiser got funded almost instantaneously. TRANS RIGHTS!
You may need to open the site in a new tab to see your comments while they’re still in the edit window.
And seriously, what’s with defending the racists? Your incredibly generous interpretation of their actions is quite a stretch.
@DesparateAmbrose
If you really are here for a discussion, then you need to go back and do some pretty intensive reading and rethink your own attitudes about gender and power in the world. Find a syllabus for a university undergraduate introductory level Women’s Studies course, get ahold of the core texts that it uses, and read them and think about them seriously. Follow the authors’ footnotes and read other sources. Listen to women you know in your life. Do a LOT of listening.
I doubt you will do this but by some chance you do then you will be closer to participating in “something resembling a discussion”.
Hexum,
They were shouting to build the wall while wearing MAGA hats. I see no other alternate explanation than racism. And I presume they purchased the MAGA hats while before the smoked weed – if that’s what they did. Also, I’ve smoked before. Several times. It didn’t make me an aggressive racist. In fact, marijuana usually mellows people out, so that explanation doesn’t even make sense. Lets not try and find some out there explanation when the simple one is right in front of us.
Okay, Ambrose is back, I’ll go back and read that. But that ain’t why I’m here.
I’m here for daaaaamn Cardi B rant remix is fiiiiire

NSFW for all the swears but it hawt
I found a statment that the little MAGA shit made to the press – please note that nowhere in his description of the incident does he claim that he was standing up to homophobia. (In fact, he’s the victim because Phillips got his face.)

@hexum7
Offer video evidence for this claim.
“The motives of Waffen-SS officers and the motives of Nazi bureaucrats were not one and the same, but they were both Nazis and both scum. How, pray tell, is motive even relevant, with the magnitude of historical and ongoing crimes we’re talking about here?”
Point well-taken, but I have a few issues. There can be no doubt who both the Nazi bureaucrats and the Waffen-SS were working for: the German state. The conquistadors had, at least arguably, potentially split loyalties between Church and State. And, yes, you can certainly argue that it amounts to one and the same thing. That’s probably closer to the truth in the case of Spain rather than, say, France. Be that as it may, while the commanders might well have been the equivalent of Waffen-SS, my guess is that the soldiers were more akin to the Wehrmacht.
Without doing any research on the subject, I think it’s safe to say Rome gave its blessing to the venture(s); but, again, without researching it, I’m willing to speculate that the popes of the time issued no orders to slaughter, enslave and otherwise mistreat any indigenous folk they might find.
Having said that, though, what I believe to be deeply wrong is that Rome’s priorities at the time essentially said that what happens to the body is small potatoes as long as the soul is saved, thus minimizing the depredations of the “explorers” (A position, by the way, not uncommon among Protestants later.). I can’t imagine anyone in today’s Curia, however conservative, who would espouse such a position.
If the “ongoing crimes” you are referring to are those of sexual abuse, I’d say that’s a matter for another thread.
