For Men’s Rights Redditors, sexual abuse only counts if the perpetrator is female, apparently

Nothing there indeed

By David Futrelle

On Thursday, former Iowa youth basketball coach Greg Stephen pled guilty to multiple child exploitation and child porn charges after admitting to sexual exploiting some 400 boys, including players he coached, over the course of many years. The details of the case are truly horrifying. As the Associated Press notes,

Stephen, 42, posed as girls on social media to trick the boys into making live videos masturbating. He secretly recorded them showering during trips to tournaments. In some cases he recorded himself fondling nude players as they slept.

Despite the appalling nature of Stephen’s crimes, his case has gotten very little media attention since his arrest last March.

It has also gotten zero attention from the Men’s Rights subreddit, the largest and most active men’s rights forum online, with nearly 200,000 subscribers.

After learning of Stephen’s plea deal I went to the Men’s Rights subreddit to see what the regulars there were saying.

Turns out they were saying absolutely nothing. As of 6 PM this afternoon — Saturday, October 20th — I could not find a single post dealing with the case. After scouring the top 100 posts in the subreddit, I did searches for posts containing Stephen’s name, as well as separate searches for “Iowa,” “basketball” and “coach,” from the past week. Nothing.

I extended the search to include posts from “all time,” and it appears that Stephen’s appalling crimes have never been discussed on the Men’s Rights subreddit. Not even once. (Unless they somehow managed to discuss his case without using his name or mentioning his profession or the number of his victims.) Apparently not one of the subreddit’s 191,917 subscribers has thought the subject important enough to bring up.

Here are some of the things they ARE discussing on the subreddit today.the appalling nightmare of new SJW and feminist animation industry False accusations of sexual impropriety as a form of political imprisonment.

Mexico opens border to women and children from migrant caravan

Why Feminists Enjoy Rape Fantasies - Cultural Analysis & Philosophy Engineering schools are now "churches of worshipers of the great God Pan"

There are also no less than 34 or 35 (I lost count) posts about “false accusations” in the top 100 posts there now — that is, roughly a third of the total.

It’s not that Men’s Rights Redditors don’t care about the sexual abuse or exploitation of boys. There are several posts about female teachers sexually assaulting their underage students, a post about a damning year-old report from Australia’s Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, and multiple posts about a 9-year-old boy falsely accused of sexually assaulting a woman in a convenience store after he accidentally brushed her with his backpack while walking past her.  (He’s black; she’s white.)

These are all issues worth discussing, though the spin that the Men’s Rightsers put on these stories can be, well, a little eccentric, to say the least.

406 False AccusationEven 9 year old boys aren't safe from false #MeToo accusations from predatory post-wall females

Uh, the problem with this woman isn’t her age, her looks or her allegedly “predatory” nature — there was nothing sexually predatory about her actions at all — but the fact that she’s a racist asshole who called the police on a black child who accidentally brushed against her.

But that’s a whole other can of worms. My point here is that Men’s Rights Redditors only seem interested in talking about the abuse or mistreatment of boys when women are (or are among) the perpetrators.

Indeed, they are so unwilling to acknowledge that men are often the perpetrators of this abuse and mistreatment that they are willing to completely write off the FOUR HUNDRED victims of Greg Stephen.

It’s almost as if the Men’s Rights movement isn’t about helping men or boys at all but is rather an excuse for a never-ending tantrum about the alleged evils of women and feminism.

It’s as if MRAs don’t actually care about addressing men’s actual problems and only use use their forum to bellyache about rotten women.

Someone should make a thread in the MRA subreddit. Just call it Greg Stephen. Link a news article. See what reaction it gets, if any.

Apparently, committing sexual abuse IS a men’s right…no wonder they’re silent about it when men do it. They don’t see anything wrong with it. They’re just mad that they don’t all get free rein to do it anymore, and that’s because feminists have raised the red flag on it. That’s why they hate feminists…and project all kinds of false “predatory female” accusations onto them to deflect from what “men’s rights” actually ARE all about. They hate us because we’re impeding them from raping us, and kids, and other men too. This cannot be repeated enough.

I have never once seen an MRA talk about men or boys who are assaulted or abused by men.

Actually, scratch that. I have. They call them cucks.

And off topic, but my grandmother died last night, so any cute animal pics people have on hand would be much appreciated.

Hello, fellow snowflakes! Long time reader, first time commenter!

It’s strange. Usually when someone brings up things like “men are victims too” and “people are unsympathetic to male victims of sexual harassment/abuse,” (both of which are true regardless of who it comes from), it’s coming from someone who’s more interested in shutting down the conversation rather than add to/start a conversation. MRAs were big offenders of that. Now I guess they’re just dropping the talking point altogether.

Remember when MRAs at least pretended to care about male victims of sexual abuse? Seems they just dropped the act altogether.

This document tells me that 93% of sex offenders are male*. Is it at all surprising that these creeps don’t actually give a shit about male survivors of sexual assault?

*It doesn’t specify, but I’m assuming that means AMAB.

wwth and anyone else who’s experienced a loss – My condolences to you. I wish for you someone with whom you can talk and share remembrances. It helped me so much.

I’m coming up on the third anniversary of my dad’s death (in three days) and it’s still hard for me. I had a beloved aunt to turn to until she, too died the following September. I was still calling her once a week until then. Not to downplay the other people in my life that I could (and did) talk to, but my aunt was the one of the only ones who knew my dad better than I did and I always felt so much more at peace when we talked.

I think I’m starting to understand *some* of why older people are the way they are; you get to a certain age and you have to cope with a lot more loss. It wears on you.

I remember a post on this site where Paul Elam or one of the other obnoxious scumbags in the MRA movement was quoted going in a single breath from complaining about how prison rape is not taken seriously to making a joke about prison rape without any evident awareness of what he was doing.

MRAs don’t give a shit about the victims of sexual assault, male or female, child or adult; all they care about is preserving and perpetuating a social order in which sexual assault is normalised and excused. Their actions speak louder than their mealy mouths on this.

My own grandmother died back in June. My aunt, my cousin and I used to go to her house on Sunday mornings to help with chores. We went there this morning one last time as the house will be sold soon; bittersweet but we will have our memories.

It is important to view the MRM not as some sort of kaleidoscope of misogyny and malformed thoughts but as a very deliberate and very well-organized conservative agitprop operation to oppose feminism.

The blatant double standard you’ve shown in this article David is what MRAs do all the time, namely attempt to either create a gender-neutral or male-oppressive view of ANY issue in order to obscure the gendered nature of the issue being discussed, in this case, sexual abuse of young boys, which is, to my knowledge, gendered.

It’s a tactic that the right uses a lot. Islamophobes will oftentimes label Islam as being the most violent threat to civilization while completely ignoring or actively cheerleading American imperialism. They will oftentimes grotesquely exaggerate quite reasonable objections to Islam while completely shouting down any criticism of US imperialism as being anti-American.

Alexis: thanks for the experiment! If you or someone has the stomach (I admit I don’t), experiment two would be to post the Greg Stephen link again, this time under a deliberately provocative headline like “400 male victims and nobody cares”.

In other words: can an outsider at least actively bait/ pressure them to care about a topic they claim to care about? I don’t even know what to guess.
