The Honey Badger Brigade’s infamous lawsuit against the Calgary Expo and The Mary Sue has ended, not with a bang but with a whimper. Well, rather a lot of whimpering, really.
The Honey Badger Brigade, as you may recall, is a collective of mostly female antifeminist weirdos known for their endless YouTube videos and their amazing ability to raise many tens of thousands of dollars from their gullible supporters on the flimsiest of pretexts.
They raised something on the order of $66,000 — as far as I can figure it based on the limited information currently available online — to fund a lawsuit against the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo after said Expo tossed them out in 2015, accusing them of “actively disregarding” the Expo’s efforts to provide “a positive and safe event” for attendees.
In the same lawsuit, the Badgers also went after the online publication The Mary Sue for allegedly contributing to Calgary Expo’s decision even though the publication didn’t weigh in on the Badgers until after they were expelled — apparently forgetting that time, as you probably know, moves forward not backwards. And did I mention that they hired a disbarred lawyer to represent them in the case?
Anyway, given the Badgers’ open support for the harassment campaign known as GamerGate, the expulsion seems pretty reasonable. And while I’m not a disbarred Canadian lawyer, their case against The Mary Sue always seemed utterly ridiculous to me.
Last Wednesday, the judge in the case finally handed down his decision, ruling against them on all counts. This evidently came as a giant shock to the Badgers, who had somehow managed to convince themselves — based on some things the judge had said earlier — that they were on the verge of a famous victory.
In a rambling, tendentious, and often quite baffling statement on the decision, Honey Badger Hannah Wallen complained that the judge had ignored “physical evidence” that the Badgers had presented and made other “errors in … reasoning” that could open the way to an appeal. Maybe a lawyer could make sense of her claims; they didn’t make much sense to me. Among her charges:
The judge indicated that his ruling was partly based on a misreading of the evidence regarding Calgary Expo personnel’s tweeted promotion of The Mary Sue’s claims about us, which he described as if they had come from an uninvolved 3rd party and not the Expo, and had been published on the Expo’s Twitter account by said 3rd party and not the Expo.
Clear as a bell, huh?
In any case, the Honey Badgers haven’t yet decided whether to appeal or not, which I imagine will have less to do with the merits of their case than with their fundraising abilities.
The reaction from their fans has been, well, revealing. In the comments to a YouTube video on the Badgers’ defeat from MundaneMatt — one of the originators of GamerGate and a big Honey Badger fan — various commenters have suggested that there must have been some nefarious conspiracy behind the ruling.
“Miscarriage of justice right there,” declared someone called Yosharian, “and I wonder how much money TMS [The Mary Sue] paid that Judge?”
I’m going to take a wild guess and say zero?
Someone called Bulwark AC declared:
I was thinking … the judge was going to go in favor of Allison and the Honey badgers but that some Form of outside influence pressured the judge … to find for CalExpo. It could also have been political influence from the mayor or governor of the province that nudged the judge to give such a drastic reversal against even himself. Heck it could have been Trudeau’s office that heard an MRA group was in court. You know how profemale he is.
One “Harry Beaver” had some more incendiary accusations:
Judge is another satanist. Wake up people. We are fighting against pedos who rape babies and eat human flesh. That´s why they all stick together.
For chrisrus1965, the problem was a cultural one:
Never underestimate the power of innate gynocentrism to override anything.
Over in the Kotaku in Action subreddit — a former GamerGate hub that has basically continued on GamerGating without the label — a few commenters suggested that this terrible injustice against the Badgers was the sort of thing that could lead to vigilante action or even outright civil war. No, really.
According to someone called crystalflash,
This is how you get Vigilantism. Seriously. The Judge can just say, “nice evidence you have there, too bad I don’t care,” tosses it into the trash bin and goes off to instead (incorrectly) cite “evidence” the judge acquired on his own outside the courtroom. Like, holy fucking shit, why fucking bother with the courts at this point when a judge can just go off, cite his own “evidence” that was never entered officially a part of the trial, and ignore everything that has happened in the court room? Seriously, for the sake of the Canadian justice system, appeal the ruling, because if that is allowed to stand, justice is dead in Canada. When the fucking courts operate like this, how could I fault any Canadian citizen for putting justice in their own hands?
You honestly think it would be ok for someone to, I guess, go shoot people because a judge said it was ok for a game convention to toss the GamerGate-supporting Honey Badgers out for flaunting the policies they’d agreed to when signing up to sell stuff there? (While he Badgers argue they didn’t flaunt these policies, the exhibitor agreement they signed said that the Expo “hall have the full power in the interpretation and enforcement of all contract regulations contained herein.”)
PessimisticPaladin went further:
That or civil wars. If people think the government will let others abuse them, or abuse them by themselves then if you can get enough people they will make a new government.
I don’t like the option but if this shit keeps up so often it may well happen.
Dudes, do you people ever listen to yourselves? This is Special Snowflaking raised to the level of an Olympic sport.
Not all the commenters were on the Badgers’ side. Back on YouTube, some accused the Badgers of looking for an excuse to scam more money from their followers for yet another pointless legal battle. One commenter mocked them for hiring a “DISBARD LAWYER FOR THREE YEARS!!!”
But the most outspoken criticism came from someone who had formerly been a big supporter of the Badgers, especially in their early days; hell, by his account he was one of the founding members. I’m talking about a certain excitable ex-A Voice for Menner who now goes by the name Max Dean Esmay, aka Max Kolbe. Take it away, Dean Max Dean:
As the man who co-created the Honeybadger Brigade, who recruited Karen Straughan and Alison into it (they both hated the name when I pitched it at them) and who was instrumental in bringing in the fraudulent Hannah, all I can say is I’m hoping this is the END of their fraudulent case.
Well that’s quite a start.
They never had one and they’ve been playing their donors on it for two or three years now. The Expo owes them no more than a refund and what the contract specifies, plus maybe some minor damages at most.
Esmay, it turns out, has been railing against the Honey Badgers for months now — making videos of his own attacking his former friends, going on other internet shows to yell about them, and dropping who knows how many comments like this on YouTube and elsewhere.
These women ARE NOT Men’s Human Rights Activists, they’re money-hungry frauds pushing a ludicrously stupid ideology–and they’ve BACKSTABBED countless early supporters and countless current donors. They’re losing popularity because Alison Tieman, Karen Straughan, Hannah Wallen, Mike Stevenson (Stephenson? I forget) ARE FRAUDS. They’re also bullies EXACTLY like … Anita Sarkeesian–they deplatform, smear, lie about mischaracterize, mock, and lie about ANYONE who calls them out–especially anyone who was ever a supporter who began to question or criticize them.
That last bit is no doubt a reference to Karen Straughan’s attempts to rebut his various charges by questioning his mental stability.
Karen Straughan is a ripoff artist. So is Alison Tieman. They may seem nice. They may have even given you good personal advice. But they’re typical Delilahs, typical manipulative women.
The Biblical reference there is no fluke. Esmay has now more or less set aside his Men’s Rights “activism” in favor of promoting his own brand of militant Catholicism, which seems to involve a lot of yelling at and about atheists (and not just this dickish ones like Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris).
But anyway, back to the Delilah Brigade:
They serve only themselves and have thrown COUNTLESS men who once supported them under the bus. We have testimonials for many and many of the Red Pill Religion volunteers and supporters are part of our team–because the Badgers screwed everybody, except their most cultish inner circle devotees.
The Honey Badger brigade does seem more that a little culty at times, but it’s a teensy bit ironic to see Esmay of all people attack them as such.
They’re not even the full Honeybadger Brigade that was in The Red Pill by Cassie Jaye. These three women and their male enablers are con artists and have been since before Red Pill Movie was released. And they’ve set back the cause of forwarding men’s human rights by years, with their antics and their VILE behavior towards so many men.
Here’s a thought for the Honey Badgers. Forget appealing the Calgary Expo suit. Sue Dean Esmay instead. And Dean, sue them right back. Fight amongst yourselves, you terrible people, and leave the rest of us alone.
My condolences as well to the Parasol family. May your grievance be as long as you need.
As for the article:
Isn’t this always how the Cool Girl’s story ends? She’s not like other girls, until she is, and then she’s chewed up and spit out.
My condolences to the Parasols.
Less importantly, “flaunt” has a secondary meaning that applies in the context I used it:
Well, yeah. There’s a limited number of marks out there. The more grifters there are looking to fleece people, the less opportunities there are for the rest.
Plus, if a grifter discredits another grifter, then they can claim higher moral ground and have a better shot at convincing suckers to believe THEY are truly legitimate, not like those scammers.
My deepest condolences for your family’s loss VP.
Thank you all for the condolences. Mr. Parasol and I are grateful for the support.
@Victorious Parasol
Condolences. I hope you and Mr. Parasol are holding up alright.
My condolences to the Parasol family 🙁
I hope you all have plenty of support around you to help you through this (and people who are mostly giving support, take care of yourselves too).
Condolences, VP. Losing a grandparent is always tough.
OT: So, Infowars supporters in London trashed a socialist bookshop. Now UKIP has suspended three members over the incident. UKIP was always an odious party, but the far right is taking advantage of UKIP’s post-Brexit slump and are trying to take them further right, so I suppose this isn’t surprising. We might soon see books being burned by an actual party fielding parliamentary candidates.

Hugs for the Parasol clan. I’m glad you’re there for each other.
@Victorious Parasol,
Please add my condolences to the lovely list already here. It sounds like Mr Parasol’s grandfather was very well loved.
@Moggie,
From the article you linked to:
Wow. What big brave alpha men these “protesters” are, huh?
I’m glad the bookshop employees weren’t hurt, at least.
Condolences to the Parasol family, V.P., you’re an inspiration!
@ Moggie;
Thanx for that link! From the article:
THIS!!! (… “extension” rather than “conclusion”, tho… I doubt they’re anywhere NEAR “done”….)
Oh wow, you guys haven’t heard about this? Dave, you need to do a post on this.
This is the latest right wing conspiracy theory, and it’s one that’s gaining serious traction with the deplorables. Y’all will have to Google “Qanon” and “The Storm”, because it’s too much for me to explain right now, but the gist is that Robert Mueller is secretly working with Trump to expose an international ring Satanists who molest children, sacrifice them to demons for power, and sell their organs. Members of this ring include Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, George Soros, and basically everyone else the deplorables hate.
Yes, it’s basically Pizzagate on steroids.
There’s evidence that it started as a joke by some anti-Trump trolls who wanted to see how gullible the Trumpkins really are. As I could have told them, the answer is “gullible enough to kill people over your little joke”.
BTW, does anyone know what’s up with the Right’s fixation on child trafficking lately? There’s Pizzagate, the Storm, and one of the things I heard deplorables say as they tried to make themselves out to be the good guys of the Kiddie Koncentration Kamp situation is “How do you know that all those thousands of people that we took all those thousands of kids from weren’t trafficking them? Prove to me that it wasn’t all human trafficking.”
When I hear “Wake up people!” I always know I’m in for some classy entertainment. I shall watch with interest. Please visualise the Bill Hader popcorn gif right here.
@VP I’m so sorry for the Parasol family’s loss.
But the left are the ones who hate free speech and are trying to censor people. Sure.
If a group of lefties trashed a right wing bookshop, we would never hear the end of it. Conservatives would spend years using the incident as an example of how much the left hates freedom. There would be news stories for days on both sides of the pond about how much we need civility. This, I predict will be a blip in the UK media and not covered at all in the US.
I’d have to say it’s probably projection. Not that child abuse is exclusive to any one ideology or anything, but abusers do gravitate to conservative movements and religious sects as they have highly hierarchal and patriarchal structures that provide easy cover for them. It’s so common for right wing groups to welcome members that openly advocate for lowering the age of consent and for child marriages. I suspect a lot of pizzagaters and Qanoners either abuse kids, want to abuse kids or have a friend who abuses kids.
@Victorious Parasol
My sympathies 🙁 Loss is hard, and so is support. Remember to take care of yourself.
@OP
Yes, I’m glad to see the Red Pill movie makers implode in a cloud of infighting. I have a special loathing for that movie – had to walk away from two formerly very close friends, after they watched it and became MRAs.
@Seraph4377
The horrifying thing to me is that their accusations have a way of sticking, even when they themselves are proven to be hypocrites, rapists, and pederasts. It’s all okay when they do it, and only evil when done by leftists. IOKIYAC, as the saying goes – “It’s okay if you’re a conservative.”
I feel like this is a bigger pattern in US society too. The same men who victimize girls and queer children, use accusations of such freely as a weapon against those who want to protect children.
And it’s terrifying. At this point in my life I’ve had to intervene in harassment or abuse incidents on e.g. public transit more times than I can recall. It’s always white men, and they’re always harassing women or children. I have to step in when I can because fuck being an enabler, but I’m scared that one of these days, the harasser is going to bring in some cops and try to put the blame on me. And from my experiences with cops, I’m pretty sure they’d believe him, not me.
I’ll cross that bridge if/when I come to it, but ugh. The mass gaslighting in this culture is really, really bad.
Addendum: I see WWTH got there first and more eloquently as usual. 🙂
But yeah, TL;DR version, it’s about projection and shifting blame. And they’re at an advantage doing so because of the way whiteness, straightness, and conservatism are coded in our society.
I’ve noticed they always accuse us of what they’re doing themselves. Makes me wonder about the “satanism” charge.
(they both hated the name when I pitched it at them)
Because even brainwashed and/or grifter anti-feminists know that naming your group after an internet meme is a one-way ticket to Irrelevant Town.
VP: My deepest condolences to Mr. Parasol.
Seraph4377: Part of the reason for the fixation on that particular accusation is that it’s the one thing they know everyone will hate on reflexively. So accusing people of being child molesters is specifically done in an attempt to make it impossible to defend against the accusations.
@Victorious Parasol
I second the aforementioned hugs.
But reading the over-the-top reactions, I had the same thoughts and I just rewatched Shaun of Shaun&Jen’s video on Fate of the Frogmen and it fits this idea that they need a grand narrative to justify not only their own existence, but all the hideous things they’ve done since GamerGate began. Visible minorities have that narrative of triumph in the face of adversity that these white guys, many of whom have lived comfortable middle-class existences, lack. But rather than adopting the obvious class-based narrative that many a socialist has been advocating, they’re so caught up in the consumerism that they reject it (or missed it) and create their own granfalloon around gaming and adjacent “geek culture” and build up these folk demons like Sarkeesian or “Big Red” and justify any level of harassment as necessary to defeat these folk demons.
Case in point, the alternately pathetic and almost-pity-inducing video of MundaneMatt blubbering over his 100K sub YouTube button. It takes a special kind of epistemological capture to leave a grown man weeping about a token from a faceless mega-corporation for spouting retrograde opinions about women in geek circles.
I actually had a conversation with my brother and his girlfriend about this concept (we’re all huge geeks). I contended (and I certainly had this bias when I was young) that in the subconscious minds of many a male geek, geek things were almost like society’s cast-offs. Like the broader culture was saying “Okay, you losers, you play with your space ships and your ray guns and your swords and superheroes, we’ll give you that to play with. The cool kids have more important things to be interested in, like cars and clothes and sports and politics. They get the real stuff.” I personally think that’s where a lot of the animosity towards “fake geek girls” originates from. Kind of a “wait, you’re too attractive to be relegated to the cast-offs of pop culture like us! Why are you reading comics or playing video games when you should be into the stuff regular society has embraced?”
Granted, this stuff is all rooted in a toxic brew of misogyny and self-esteem issues, which is what I realized after contemplating the topic back in university and realizing that conventional attractiveness had no bearing either on interest or social status. But I suspect that’s what motivates MundaneMatt and the toxic elements of geekdom like him.
Incidentally, as kind of an amateur artist myself, a part of me is morbidly curious to check out Tieman’s comics. Anybody read ’em? Are they as goofy as their artist?
@Seraph4377, every time I try to read about Qanon, I can feel myself getting dumber. It’s like it’s fractally stupid: every time you zoom in on one bit of stupid, there’s more stupid. And it will quite possibly get some people killed. It makes me despair for humanity.
Wait, it took three years for this case to get dismissed?!?
Katamount: One reason for the geekboyz rejecting socialism is that being a geek is something of a class-based privilege, or at least it long has been. Your parents have to have spare funds when you’re growing up to buy comics, or RPG supplements, or video consoles and games, or a fairly up-to-spec computer, etc. That shit ain’t cheap. It can be managed by middle-class families (which, sadly, are growing less common), but socialism has been successfully demonized as only benefiting the poor, usually at the expense of the middle (yes, this is more a result of the Democrats being only marginally less craven on taxation issues than the Republicans, at least during the decades leading up to Trump, but it still sold the notion that tax hikes only ever hit the middle class).
So, yeah, as the economy crumbles and they realize they won’t be able to support, as adults, the lifestyle they had as kids, they’re bitter and unable to confront that the people they support are the ones who caused the problem.
(I grew up in the 70s and 80s. My mom, a single parent, was able to support my brother and me, all while living in a 3 bedroom/2 bathroom home with a finished basement that we converted into a fourth bedroom. And I was able to feed both my comic book obsession AND my RPG habit. She worked hard and made sacrifices, but it was do-able. I seriously doubt a social worker would be able to pull that off today.)
I went to go watch them in court one of the days, and to be only reason I’m surprised about the verdict is because of how abysmally poorly the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo handled the case.
They had representing them in court a man who has no legal background and is a logistics person by profession, who attended the local community college, and has no experience in legal matters that I know of. If I wanted to win, I would send a lawyer.
I used to volunteer with that Expo representative, and he is a gentleman and a mensch, but he is no lawyer. He was not even a reasonable facsimile of a lawyer. His questions missed all the major points and he walked into every trap they built. Their witnesses were very well prepped and he had no witnesses on the day I was present.
It was surreal, really. Explaining to the game lawyer guy how Twitter works. The group debating what constitutes a rape joke. All of it.
Even worse, are used to be friends with Alison, and for a time she thought I was there for her, even though all the people they had flown in or sitting on one side of the court room and I was sitting alone on the other. I wanted to tell her that I disagreed With her, but I thought she was wrong, but the whole thing just seemed so very sad.
And I know that they think that there’s some big conspiracy, maybe they think bad things about the judge or whatever, but I’m pretty sure he used to preside over divorces and I found his rulings to be very fair towards men. So I think that his judicial record, if examined, will dispel for anyone open to reason any negative ideas.
Anyway, I am pleasantly surprised with the verdict, I found the whole situation side, and I also found it puzzling due to be lack of apparent vigorous activity on the part of the CCEE.
To me the only way that the actions of the CCEE and their parent company makes sense is if they intended to lose. The entire time I sat there I wondered to myself if they were deliberately trying to throw the case because they lacked commitment to the ideas of equality and freedom from harassment.
