What about the men (who are not polar bears)?

Cold.

By David Futrelle

Here, courtesy of Australian funny lady writer Bec Shaw’s Twitter, is what may well be “the most amazing ‘what about men’ of all time.”

The pic above I mean.

This dude is arguing with her in the replies.

If you’re on the twitter you should follow Bec and also her WomanAgainstFeminism parody account.

I’ve never seen people that are so outraged by the most mundane shit. Seriously, are all MRA’s super privileged white guys with too much time on their hands?

At least one of them has finally learned that there is an International Men’s Day. Will he forget over the next 10 days?

I adore Bec Shaw (and the parody account) and I love that the polar bear’s name is Mishka – ’twas my nickname growing up.

Most of Arguing Guy’s figures are roughly correct, for Australia anyway (except wrt homelessness; men make up 56% of the total). And these are indeed serious problems. I hope that Arguing Guy is working to change the following:

1. indigenous Australians make up only 3% of the population, but about a quarter of the homeless population, and many of these are men.
2. most of the asylum-seekers on Manus Island (all of whom are male) have severe mental health issues, including suicidal ideation.
3. workplace deaths – this is what unions are constantly working to improve. I have no idea what Arguing Guy’s views are, but I do know that many people who yell about male deaths on the job are also anti-union and anti-regulation.

Plenty of good work being done by plenty of good people on these problems, but more help is always needed and welcomed! Just a suggestion, Arguing Guy 🙂

How pathetic do you have to be to get jealous of polar bears? And how pathetic do you have to be to think the guy who’s jealous of polar bears has a point important enough to get into an argument about it?

The polar bear population is threatened due to loss of habitat caused by global warming. The male human population? Not so much. So shut the fuck, what about the menzers.

i am jealous of polar bears, but mostly because bears are great. I’m not sure if that applies here though.

weirwoodtreehugger: chief manatee

I should say jealous in the sense of being bitter that some people like them. As opposed to just wishing you could be that majestic or cute or fierce or whatever.

This guy reminds me of Gregory Malchuk, the Intactivist who just tweets about anti-circumcision (which is a perfectly worthy cause) at the most innocuous of posts.

It’s just strange how strident some can be in inserting their pet cause into an otherwise innocent subject…

“My son turned 3 today!! Happy Birthday!”

*posts a graphic photo of a baby being circumcised* “Did you rape your boy at birth?!?”

(He once tweeted something to AMC theaters, who was offering a special on a movie. That sort of thing.)

What I’m saying is, timing. Timing is everything, if one wants to be taken seriously about their cause.

That was brilliant. The worst fan fiction I ever read was better than some of that shit. Thanks for finding and sharing.

@PeeVee
They only care about circumcision when they can blame it on women instead of the corn flakes guys masturbation obsession,
so if anything its an anti-sex thing rather then anti-men thing (especially when you consider not all penis owners are men).

@Otrame
It sounds like its managed to be worse then 50 shades,
of course a lot right wing fiction is like this the real question is is it worse then left behind?

Michael Morrison is upset by polar bears getting all the attention. MRAs (aka sexist authoritarians) always have a problem with animals.

They call women birds, pigs, chicks, sows, cows, heifers, etc.

They’re mad that a woman might prefer her cat to an MRA.

These sexist authoritarians also have a problem with nature. They’re trying to destroy our beautiful planet, our one and only home.

Whatever they can’t control, they attempt to demean or kill.

Then they’re sad when people spot this character trait and want nothing to do with them.

I guess I’d be sad too if I were a terrible human being.

OT, but it looks like there’s another predator in show biz:

Ryan Seacrest’s Former E! Stylist Alleges Sexual Assault
comment image

Suzie Hardy, Ryan Seacrest’s on-set stylist at E! News for seven years, has gone public with allegations of sexual assault and harassment against Ryan Seacrest, her former boss.

The allegations were detailed in a letter obtained exclusively by Variety and written by Hardy in November. Addressed to E!, NBCUniversal and Seacrest himself, the letter describes a hellish ordeal during her tenure, which ended when the company let her go in 2013, after she reported Seacrest’s alleged abuse to HR.

The Force of Decency Awakens

Paul Krugman FEB. 26, 2018

A funny thing is happening on the American scene: a powerful upwelling of decency. . . . [W]e may be in the midst of a transformative moment.

You can see the abrupt turn toward decency in the rise of the #MeToo movement; in a matter of months ground that had seemed immovable shifted, and powerful sexual predators started facing career-ending consequences.

You can see it in the reactions to the Parkland school massacre. . . . [T]he story is staying at the top of the news, and associating with the N.R.A. is starting to look like the political and business poison it should have been all along.

And . . . you can see it at the ballot box, where hard-right politicians in usually reliable Republican districts keep being defeated thanks to surging activism by ordinary citizens. . . .

Political scientists have a term and a theory for what we’re seeing on #MeToo, guns and perhaps more: “regime change cascades.”

Here’s how it works: When people see the status quo as immovable, they tend to be passive even if they are themselves dissatisfied. Indeed, they may be unwilling to reveal their discontent, or to fully admit it to themselves. But once they see others visibly taking a stand, they both gain more confidence in their dissent and become more willing to act on it — and by their actions they may induce the same response in others, causing a kind of chain reaction.

Such cascades explain how huge political upheavals can quickly emerge, seemingly out of nowhere. Examples include the revolutions that swept Europe in 1848, the sudden collapse of communism in 1989 and the Arab Spring of 2011.

Now, nothing says that such cascades have to be positive either in their motivations or in their results. . . . [H]istorians have described 1848 as a turning point where history somehow failed to turn: At the end of the day the old, corrupt regimes were still standing.

I nevertheless find the surge of indignation now building in America hugely encouraging. And yes, I think it’s all one surge. The #MeToo movement, the refusal to shrug off the Parkland massacre, the new political activism of outraged citizens (many of them women) all stem from a common perception: namely, that it’s not just about ideology, but that far too much power rests in the hands of men who are simply bad people. . . .

Again, there’s no guarantee that the forces of decency will win. In particular, the U.S. electoral system is in effect rigged in favor of Republicans, so Democrats will need to win the popular vote by something like seven percentage points to take the House. But we’re seeing a real uprising here, and there’s every reason to hope that change is coming.

Men die 8 years earlier than women

Missed the ‘on average’ part. Also, in Australia, it’s 4yrs difference and, in Murica, it’s 5

Wait this is wrong! You need to give the bears tums, don’t want the bears to get a stomachache from eating such toxic material.

(Oh hello! Been a while since I last posted here! Sorry for that…)

And… now I’m writing a rock song called “What About the Men?!?”… at the moment the lyrics are more straightforward rather than satirical because I’m generally bad at satire, but… I may be able to go for satire if I can pull it off… we’ll see…

90% of the murders and almost 75% of the violent crimes are committed by men too (at least in the US), but somehow MRAs never bring that up, want to think about the possible reasons behind why that is or consider what should be done about it.

Course they do. It’s proof to them that women are slackers who’d rather sit around eating bon bons than do their part. The men are having to give it 150% to make up for the shortfall in violent women.

When random twitter MRAs complain about the supposed lack of an International Men’s Day, they kind of have a point that such a day effectively doesn’t exist.

It’s not popular or well known compared to the International Women’s Day. It’s not recognized (AFAIK) by governments or other major organizations. You might well not have heard of it if you aren’t an MRA – or if you are an MRA but too lazy to google men’s issues.

From there we get to the obvious reason why things like International Men’s Day or White History Month or Straight Pride aren’t taking off. These things just aren’t socially relevant, most people don’t care and even the people who purport to care don’t really have a vision on how it’d work in practice so they focus on blaming others’ passivity.

I didn’t look at Andy Waters further tweets, because I didn’t want to loose the sense of “not so horrible, probably still sane, at last not impolite” (the last one makes for easier discusion).

The first one is for me the more interesting one.
Homeless people and work placesafty are topics that if you want to increase the situation nobody will say anythink against it.

Interesting question is for me of course why there are more homeless men than women since women are more in danger of getting poor.

About worksafty:
One reason is that men seem to do more manual work, aka more dangerous work, historical. This is chanching in western society, so this number would be very interesting to see how it veries from country to country.
Another reason is that men try to be overconfident, or not paying attention more often than women. (from my experience)

About life expectancy:
In my homecoutry the difference from the last UNStudie its 4.7 years.
What I heared (sorry have no source) that the difference is shrinking.
For Germany one of the mainreasons for males dying earlier was war that is no longer a reason for dying today.
One of the other reasons for the gab getting closer is that women are taking all kind of jobs today and a dangerous life/ having unhealthy habbits is more common among femals than it was one centuary ago.

Making it longer, everythink is good, as long as we stay healthy, but I found a country were the difference is only about 1 year.
Unfortunatly I think most men would take that women live longer 4-5 years and live in everance 30 years longer than women living only a year longer and both sexes die around 50 in avarange.

Edit: Happy PolarBearday even if I am a bit late.

@Arctic Ape,

This is all true. And meanwhile, there are actual things that actually try to improve things for men; e.g. Men’s Health Week. I’ve never seen an MRA promoting that.

Men’s Day, White History Month, etc. etc. are all premised on the warped notion of equality these people have – one which ignores:
1. the lack of a level playing field
2. the sheer weight of history
3. other things that I’m too tired to properly articulate…

A few months back, people got angry about Far Cry 5 b/c it featured whites as the antagonists. There were literally takes like “imagine if there was a game where black people were the bad guys!!! The SJWs would be furious!”

More recently, my favourite hot take on Black Panther was: “imagine if there was a movie about a white superhero from a mythical land?!!!” to which many replied: you mean, like, Thor? or Superman?

(I lied: my favourite hot take on Black Panther was the Breitbart dude who argued that T’Challa was basically Trump; Wakanda the US).

@Mish
Do they even know Far Cry 3/4 exist or do they think that Far Cry 5 just came into existence with that number for no reason?

I’m imagining these people saw wolfenstein II and went “gasp A game where you kill nazis!? Imagine if it was about killing Muslims the snowflakes would be in a tizzy!”
