Hope you all are having a lovely day today, whatever this day means to you (or doesn’t). Consider this an open thread, to discuss whatever, from presents to politics to cats to whatever holiday stress you might be feeling.
And here’s some stuff I found on the Twitter.

With any small truck debate, one person’s treasure is another’s poison so take all recommendations with a huuuuuuuge grain of salt.
That said, my dad had a little Chevy S-10 that survived our family for about two decades before it started to have any real chronic issues.
That totally might have been just luck of the draw, but it seemed like a decent little thing.
I finally reached the end! I’ve been trying for weeks, but the number of pages kept growing and growing…and all the good links that have been shared made it very difficult to progress quickly, and very worth it. Thank you all (even if some of the links were after the fact, because it took me so long to catch up).
Ahem. The baby kitty boy is just too adorable, I wish I could get kitty cuddles. Oh yeah I hope some of you kind of sort of remember me from my off and on posting. I still have “no pets” on my lease, and I have been in cat withdrawals for the past year and a half now. Thank you, Skiriki, for being so generous with your pictures. Also, I have similar problems with cold bothering my right hand, and sympathize. Have you tried a wrist brace with a knitted glove over it? Honestly, I wear the brace as much to keep the heat around my wrist/hand as to protect my wrist, and it helps.
Z&T – I work as a dispatcher for a tow truck company, and cold snaps always result in a lot of business. Maybe consider an engine block heater? They range in expense but can make a big difference. I’m glad you got yourself taken care of.
David – I may not post much (ever) but I notice when you’re gone. Glad you’re improving, and I hope that continues, and that you don’t mind me butting in to say so :).
And here, just because I’m still weak from being sick, and I’m kind of emotionally up/down and I feel like sharing…
My divorce finally went through two months ago. This is very good, I’m so glad to have my name again, so glad to have a specific amount that my ex is mandated to pay in child support, glad to be free. Except that the program that takes care of child support has been dragging butt since the new year, and it’s been over a month since I’ve gotten anything. Which wouldn’t be a problem, except that we’re out of propane now. No heat, no hot water, no oven (though I have other ways to cook, at least). I had to send the boys to his house early this week, just so they can take hot showers before school tomorrow.
I’m set to get my AS at the end of this semester. Then I’m off to state university to continue in civil engineering. It’s exciting! Though my boys don’t want to move, so they’re staying here, which isn’t. But maybe I can find a place where I can have cats! And my boys are old enough that they’ll be done with high school soon, and maybe they’ll want to move to the city, rather than stay rural. One can hope.
My honey will be going with me. I’m loving being in a poly relationship. It’ll be nice being in a place where I don’t have to worry about being outed as much, too.
I missed my last two appointments with the psychiatrist (life happened) and the clinic discontinued my service. Not a hard thing to get it started again, except I’m on my last few antidepressants with no remaining refills, and it’ll be at least a few weeks before I can get myself seen again. Is that bad? It’s Lexapro. I’m actually reluctant to look it up, because I think it IS bad and I just can’t deal with that right now. I need to sleep tonight.
But it’s so freaking cold! I’m huddled under my blanket, still weak and achy, and I really want to take a shower. But I think my space heater has warmed up my room enough to be tolerable, so…good night.
@dust bunny
Exactly. Sheila Jeffreys is one of the most toxic TERFs around, and she’s been bashing straight women for decades, too – particularly re hetero-sex and having kids.
ETA: these don’t seem to be contradictory positions for her, is what I meant. Ugh, tired.
@Moggie,
Same. I second (& third) guess myself to the point of exhaustion even when things are objectively going well, so that level of confidence is seriously hard to comprehend. But it does seem to be quite real (case in point, Carl of Swindon or any “skeptic” YouTuber).
@Contra
“That said, my dad had a little Chevy S-10 that survived our family for about two decades before it started to have any real chronic issues.”
I loved the Chevy S-10s, but they don’t sell them in the US anymore. They’ve been replaced by the Colorado, which are bigger trucks, and I’ve heard bad things about fixing them. (Of course, this was from a dodge truck guy, so…)
@Z&T
I think my main things about getting a truck/SUV is buying American branded(usually cheaper to fix if you live in the US), getting one with 4WD for the snow, and avoiding the ones that have been used for plowing and off-roading. Personally, I find SUVs pointless, because I hate driving them, and if I’m going to deal with that level of pollution/gas guzzling, I’m going to get a bed and do work with it. So I can’t give thoughts there, :p but I’m really partial to dodge trucks. They look nice, usually have the best storage, and while the can be pretty noisy/rough trucks, in my experience they’re pretty indestructible.
Didn’t have time to post this weekend. Did you take that loan? Still looking for thoughts? 🙂
@Mistyful
Yeah, I’m looking for those sheepskin mitts for a reason — I really have hard time with synthetics, and there’s the fact that my hand does read the input of a material correctly… up until it comes to brain. Synthetics feel just plain freaky with my hand because things are misrepresented. A lump of smooth metal would be ideal, but that’s not going to keep things warm! 😀
Anyway, mama has decided that Big Boi MUST sleep in human bed and nothing, nothing else will do.
I spoke with Otter, and he’s going to sleep a night or two in his work room’s bed; there’s now a heated kittybed in our hoomin bed on his side of it, and Carisma is happy as clam in there with Big Boi.
I asked because very soon — as in, only couple of days — Big Boi is going to be too heavy for her to lug around and she’s going to give it up.
@Mistyful
I recognize your nym. Good to see you. Glad to hear about the divorce but sorry to hear about the financial issues. Could we maybe chip in some to help you get some heat? Winter isn’t a good time to be without it!
@Jenora
Sorry for the late reply, but holy shit, Sue-Ann Levy ran in your area???? Oy vey! O.o It was bad enough accidentally reading her nonsense in the 24HRS on my way to the crossword puzzle during my morning commute.
Yeah, McGuinty was the kind of weasel that would capitalize on bigotry if it served his interests. The whole issue didn’t sit right with me to begin with; after all, for all the issues that the province had, that’s the one that dominated the headlines? As you said, it’s an anachronistic relic of the English Protestant-French/Irish Catholic animosity of the late 19th, early 20th century, animosity that has largely faded into the background noise of the culture now that both are becoming more diverse and multicultural. In my perfect Ontario, the Catholic board would be gradually absorbed by the public board and the religious components phased out. That’s its own kettle of fish, but to echo what you said, it’s gotta happen sometime, particularly as society continues to leave religion behind.
It could be my life experience with the Harris government that told me not to trust Tories, but despite all of his overtures towards moderation, I didn’t trust Patrick Brown further than I could throw him. He had a fundamentalist past, and while plenty of people have left fundamentalism behind (like my step-father), they don’t necessary run in the party representing the wealthy and the religious. I was glad to see Hudak go, but frankly, it would take a lot of steps for a member of any right-wing party to consider them “moderate”, starting with a cleaning of house.
My bet for the next PC leader is Christine Elliott. Doug Ford has too much brotherly baggage and nobody wants to look at Tony Clement’s face, so I think it’s gotta be her.
Holy Hell, is this still a site? Is David alive? What the hell is going on?
Just took a peek at what skullboy is up to these days (got reminded of him by seeing a picture of Anton Lavey on an article 😛 ), and my eyes wound up rolling so hard they felt like fruit machine reels.
Apart from the usual whinging about women (with his idol Roosh, no less!), he’s also preparing for the civil war he says is coming this year by analysing von Clausewitz’ On War.
Very, very badly. I mean, he’s so far off he’s not even in the same country as the stick he’s trying to grab the wrong end of. 😛
@ shadowplay
I wonder if they’re aware that On War was actually published by Mrs von Clausewitz? She edited it from his notes and wrote a fair bit of original material for it.

@ slightly annoying
Self evidently; as you could probably have garnered from the fact you’re posting on it.
Yes, as you well know.
Well, first the earth cooled, then came the dinosaurs, but they got too big…
Well, Extremely Annoying is not doing anything to dissuade me from my theory that they’re one of our regular trolls who is mad that the site isn’t currently busy enough to troll properly.
Alan
Didn’t his wife do most of the political analysis aspects? Vaguely recall hearing that, but LEOC was a looong time ago 😛
Side note: If you’re still keeping up, dig out Potholm if you haven’t already. All his stuff is solid. 🙂
@ shadowplay
Quite possibly. We do know that whilst Carl was alive they were very much a team; and it was noted by contemporaries that they were always banging on about politics with each other.
She was a bit of a polymath, as were her sisters. Her mother and father gave them quite the education. Her mother was on note as saying she wanted to create a phenomenon with her daughters.
I wonder what Roosh and Co would have to say about her ‘hypergamy’ bearing in mind she was minted and Carl barely scraped by on his junior officer salary?
(and thanks for the Potholm reminder)
@Alan
LOL, been a long time since I’ve seen an Airplane II reference.
Man… wanted to like that movie, but Ken Finkleman was no Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker
McCabe is out.
No worries 🙂 . I’m fond of Chris – we’ve talked a fair bit.
Figure most of Roosh’s lot would simply deny she had anything to do with the book. What’s a mere woman know about war?
As far as her being much wealthier than him – isn’t that sort of the MRWeenies MO? Live off a woman while bashing women? 😛
That’s at least the fifth time Slightly Annoying has asked that same question, and the third this month. Maybe best ignore them from now on?
Who? 😛
Eh, there’s nothing wrong with Mildly Irritating, other than the assumption that they’re owed something by David. A common and tiresome idea, but hardly unique to SA. Note – I’ve not gone back to see if they are actually trollish when not posting their “where’s David” posts.
Will admit though – I wouldn’t object to a new open thread starting. Having Christmas in the title is a bit odd at the end of January.
But David’s health comes first in my book, no question at all. Dude ran himself down a lot over the last couple of years working on here and elsewhere – and that’s not considering his actual medical problems.
slightly annoyed is a bot from Twitter who lost?? go back to Twitter!
@ Mistyful re: the situation with your medication
I’ve quit SSRIs a couple of times, even cold turkey. Do taper it off with your remaining pills if they’re the kind that can be split if you aren’t already. It can help a lot.
You know, I’ve had a recommendation from an online acquaintance that I wanted to run by the Mammotheers: Chapo Trap House podcast. I listened to the selected clips they have on YouTube and they seemed to have a solid grip of how the alt-right came to be and how the effects of late-stage capitalism might have contributed to the problem. They do sound a little “dudebro”-y so I wanted to know if there’s anything about them that you guys have found unsavoury….
Their roasting of Ben Shapiro’s dumb political thriller was gut-bustingly funny though. It makes Aurini’s Fallout fanfic read like Philip K. Dick.
Yet another mass shooting by a misogynist driven by entitlement and toxic masculinity.

Oh, wait. I mean he was just probably crazy. Nothing to see here!
Just a few quick notes:
Slightly Annoyed has now been banned for being, well, annoying.
Also, I just let through some comments by VioletBeauregarde which were in moderation for awhile. I think they’re all on the previous page.
Thanks, everyone, for your patience. I’m still dealing with my health issues but as I said in my last little update here I’m a bit more hopeful about treatment and if all goes well I may be able to start posting again soon or soonish.
@David
Best of luck on the treatment.
@Violet
Welcome back!
Treatment works better and certainly more smoothly if you think it’s gonna work, so thats good. 😛
We’re patient. You be so as well, right? 😀
