Merry Christmas, if you’re into that sort of thing!

Hope you all are having a lovely day today, whatever this day means to you (or doesn’t). Consider this an open thread, to discuss whatever, from presents to politics to cats to whatever holiday stress you might be feeling.

And here’s some stuff I found on the Twitter.

shadowplay,

that is difficult to say! there are some very good films between 2008 and 2018. ?

I like wonder woman but my favorite recent film is In the Heart of The Sea. about true story of Moby Dick. if you edit men out of this it will be only whales and picture of the sea and beautiful music. so still good. I have soundtrack to this movie on my phone ?

also don’t forget The Force Awakens! and Seven Psycopaths too. and also Пятница, Разбуди Меня and Самый Лучший День

it is quite ‘boring’ maybe to some people. but for me it is really good. atmosphere and music are perfect.

Boring is sometimes good 😀

In other news – want to know the real reason the Dems caved on the shutdown? They couldn’t pin the blame on the Repubs.

In the poll, 39 percent of Americans said Democrats deserve the lion’s share of blame for the shutdown, with 38 percent blaming Trump. Just 18 percent said most of the blame lies with congressional Republicans, who control both chambers of Congress.

@Shadowplay

a movie that has no purpose other than to entertain

Well, and finally give visualization and mythic weight to the empowerment fantasies of women and girls worldwide. That too

Anyway, sucky but expected about WW (genre film, kinda poor 3rd act from what I’ve heard. Wonder if it woulda gotten something if Bigelow directed it instead of Jenkins. The Academy loves her). Shocked they didn’t go with Professor Marston and the Wonder Women instead at least. On a personal, black dude note, this also saddens me, cos that means Black Panther is that much less likely to get nommed next year. Am pretty jazzed about Get Out getting Best Picture, Director, Screeplay, and Lead Actor after being pushed to the Comedy section at the Globes tho

Personally, I’m disappointed that Kedi wasn’t nominated for Best Documentary.

For a “message” movie with whales my go-to has always been Star Trek IV. It even has a couple of women in it, and with professional jobs to do rather than as love interests.

The whale scientist part was originally intended for Eddie Murphy (as a UFO buff)

@Shadowplay, Valentin That’s why when I’m feeling down I watch ‘Secret of Roan Innish’. No explosions or chase scenes, just a lovely family film with a little mythological twist. 🙂

I don’t think In the Heart of The Sea is a ‘message’ movie. it is historical. how I see it, it takes away a ‘message’ of Moby Dick. obviously – I am a seafarer so what I seen in this movie is probably more personal than what other people seen. for me, I liked it because it is bleak, and empty. it is full of fear. but long, endless fear – specific fear that only the ocean will give. I traded often in this place where they drifted in their lifeboats. I tell you, it is so empty there is not even birds. I only watched this movie ones, because of this. it almost like horror – how it shows this fear without hope.

It is cool that Get Out picked up some noms. Horror is even less likely than action-adventure to get recognition. I guess since it had a political message, they could justify it to themselves as a “real” movie. Personally, I felt that It Follows was also a good enough movie to have deserved award noms but although it’s just about universally beloved by horror fans, it didn’t have much of a reach outside of the horror fandom.

Valentin:

Saving Private Ryan seems like American war propaganda to me anyway. there are much better film’s with more women and more complex ideas.

Have you seen Elem Klimov’s Come and See, about the Nazi campaign in Byelorussia? It’s… I don’t know how to describe it. Intense. Hypnotic. Some scenes are burned into my brain. I have it on DVD, but I can’t bring myself to watch it again, since it’s one of the most unflinching depictions of evil I’ve ever seen. (And now I have a feeling that I’ve talked about this before, so apologies if I’m repeating myself).

@moggie

yeah I seen it but very long time ago also only once. it is such a movie you only watch one time.

@wwth

I also enjoyed It Follows. I read about it before I seen it and I thought it is very good. steady atmosphere and really nice style and costumes. it is perfect horror classic.

edit

I am also very excited for Black Panther!

I hope you turn out to be wrong about that. I’m not a huge comics fan, but when I saw the BP trailer I was all “HOLY FUCK YES!”. Pretty stoked for it.

I agree with Axe that they didn’t really “Cave,” but more importantly, that poll is really misleading. It splits the Repubs into two options; the real number is 56%. Which, given the quarter of the country who’d still brainlessly support them even if Trump killed and ate their mother on live TV, is huge.

Not heard of it, sounds lovely! I tend to grab Sister Act (either one, they’re both cheery as hell and good fun, but the second is a teensy bit better) as my goto antidote for the blahs 🙂

Thinking more about the Saving Private [man removed]…

“They erased Nazis from history!”

Galaxy Quest: “We based this on your historical documents.”

Key takeaway: “Some people have issues detecting the difference between history, and history-based entertainment”?

The first thing of Le Guin’s I ever read:

Only in silence the word,
only in dark the light,
only in dying life:
bright the hawk’s flight
on the empty sky.

Oh no! Ursula K. Leguin … 🙁

epitome of incomprehensibility

LeGuin? No! I’m sad to hear that. I loved her stories in Compass Rose*, though I haven’t gotten into her novels yet.

Re: Wonder Woman not nominated for things – I’d say there’s evidence of sexism as well as genre snobbery. Besides The Dark Knight, what about the last Lord of the Rings film winning 12 Oscars in 2004, including Best Picture? (Not the superhero genre, of course, but another “nerdy” “non-serious” type).

I saw Wonder Woman with my brother in August. I liked it, but he LOVED it. Couldn’t stop raving about it. He’s more into fantasy/mythological stuff than I am; he’d agree with you, @Fishy Goat, about The Secret of Roan Innish. 🙂

*ETA: especially her story where a group of South American women get to the South Pole before anyone else. I used to be a bit obsessed with Antarctica. I had to compile an anthology – on any topic – for a class assignment once, and I picked “stories about Antarctica” and this was in it

Speaking of war films here’s one I watched a couple of months back. Order No. 027 is a 1986 North Korean war film. During the Korean War a group of North Korean commandos go behind enemy lines to seize important information and attack enemy commanders.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hN_Rqkek7nY&t=16s

This has better production values than I expected, but the sped up film in a couple of places wasn’t a good idea. And some of the martial arts movies look more appropriate for a Hong Kong fantasy film than a Korean War movie.
