Merry Christmas, if you’re into that sort of thing!

Hope you all are having a lovely day today, whatever this day means to you (or doesn’t). Consider this an open thread, to discuss whatever, from presents to politics to cats to whatever holiday stress you might be feeling.

And here’s some stuff I found on the Twitter.

It’s weird to assume that a man taking his wife’s surname is unmanly. If you must view things in terms of masculinity, why not say that that’s a guy who is so secure in his masculinity that he feels it isn’t diminished by that symbolic act of respect?

@skiriki: I’m sorry for your loss with the first kitten, but congratulations on the healthy little one! MomCat did good, and I hope she’s doing well too.

@Thread:

I don’t really have any useful stuff to add to the conversations, so I’ll do ye old stereotypical thing and go “So, how about that weather?”

It’s all sorts of wrong, here. It rained last night in interior Alaska. In January.THIS IS SO NOT RIGHT. Meanwhile, people in FLORIDA were muttering about getting snow.

SO NOT RIGHT.

Then, of course it snowed after dark so roads are snow on top of ice and it’s lovely. Schools and stuff are still rolling, but it’s a little slick.

Next week we’ll be back to the usual -15 to -30 F and things will be better.

@Moggie: I’m afraid not?

Judging from the article, that is. Yuck, yuck, yuck.

The weather here hasn’t been quite as dramatic, but last weekend saw a very welcome cool change. Saturday was in the high 30s (Celsius, obv) with killer humidity. I was showering and I thought “hm, the water’s a tad warm, I’ll turn down the hot” only to realise the hot tap wasn’t even on. Ew.
Then Sunday afternoon/evening the temp. dropped by around 10 degrees and the humidity went with it. I swear you could hear the sighs of relief all over the city.
In other news, my son spent an afternoon at an indoor rock-climbing gym with a girl from school that he’s had a crush on for ages. They had a blast, and I was especially charmed when my son told me about being halfway up an intermediate climb, and struggling a bit, only to see his friend go zooming up an advanced climb, 40 metres in the air. There wasn’t even a hint of #masculinitysofragile ???
(it’s a little thing, but it made me happy)

Since you were all waiting impatiently – the Orange One has tweeted that he’s released his fake news awards on the GOP website.

The website has crashed.

No one can see the list.

Yet the tweet has 31k likes, 13k retweets, and climbing at about 500 per minute. Must be some of his fake followers (according to twitteraudit, he’s got 13.5 million of them 😛 ) getting the news out.

You know what’s the most unfun?

Waking up at 3 am and realizing that your cat has bled on you, your bedsheets and other things.

Seems that Carisma went to the litterbox, squished out a tiny bit of placenta that had remained and then she had a wild bout of running between me and Otter in bed, rather agitated for attention.

And then I woke up and uuuuuggghhhhh there’s a kittybum-shaped puddle of blood and aaaaaaghhhh, I have to spend an hour random-sampling her bumside with wipes and check if she’s still bleeding, but it looks like no, not anymore.

So it is now 4:34 am and I want a mug of tea and I still need to wait about an hour and half because I need to do blood glucose tests and I’m too awake to sleep, too tired to do anything…

For those of you who took part in my Minecraft realm would you still be interested if I re-opened it? I’m thinking about buying a 90 day subscription but want to see what interest there is before I do.

@Scented Fucking Hard Chairs
Oh yeah, a new good bed is AWESOME! Kitties love ours (memory foam mattress, mmmmm!), they’ll camp in it as much as they can, unless the weather gets so cold that their warmed beds are even nicer. 😀

Edited to add: PS, Carisma seems okay again, slightly grumpy that I stepped on her paw, tho.

Also today –

A brave, anonymous man fixed “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” so that it’s now watchable (in his view, and that of many others). He removed all the female characters and names as best as possible. He admits it makes the plot a tad confusing, but sacrifices must be endured for great article.

@Shadowplay: Russian bots.

No everything is Russian bots. every day on Twitter I followed by accounts which is a sexy picture of a lady and link to website. or I liked by these accoints. sometimes 7 or 8 followed me in one day and even more liked. I block every time for like and follow. I have 93 followers. so imagine how manu sexy bots follow donald trump and like his tweets? I think it is more reasonable explanation.

and for what are Russian bots now anyway? trump already won he can fuck up America how he likes now. dugin already got his influence on American alt right. you know – wife of Richard Spencer is Nina Kouprianova? she was translator and American promoter for alexander dugin. and alexander dugin is legitimate in Russia. putin says many things dugin also said before and makes policy based on believe and ideas of dugin. not so extreme as dugin, but his influence is very clear. forget (maybe) russian bots. this is not any problem.

@SFHC, Skiriki:

Damn, I need a new bed! I had a soft-sided waterbed, the kind with tubes filled with water, and two of those tubes leaked. What a mess. Mold, gross. Never again.

@Skiriki: I’m glad to hear Carisma and her kitten are doing OK.

@Valentin: I didn’t know Spencer was married.

yes he is. he is like many of these alt right men who have fetishs for eastern European and Asian women. plenty of white supremacists have this veiw about these women because they believe they are traditional and good wives.

article by Diana Bruk about Richard and Nina. they are separated now, but I am very sure any translator and promoter for Dugin is right wing.

http://observer.com/2017/09/interview-nina-kouprianova-wife-of-alt-right-leader-richard-spencer/amp/

I was also interested in what led her to marry a man who dreams of “an ethno-state that would be a gathering point for all Europeans,”

^very easy to answer. she supports dugin.

@Surplus,

@Mish: Immediately thought of a similar scene from Clockstoppers. Was I the only one?

Well, I can’t speak for anyone else, but I had to Google the movie, so no, didn’t occur to me 🙂
However, I might pass that on to my boy – he’ll think it’s pretty cool.

Re the Aziz Ansari story, and that revolting article that @kupo noted, a page or so back: I’ve come across some more thoughtful and interesting pieces.

This particular article starts off like another “it was just bad sex” argument, but then:

Grace’s story is common. It’s so common that I don’t have to imagine it because I remember it. I laugh about it without smiling. It’s the story of so much bad sex. And when I hear that bad sex described as a sexual assault, it forces me to reexamine my own history. And see, I just started feeling strong again.

If we begin to call all sexual assault what it is, we will have to voluntarily admit more pain into our lives, pain that we have up to this point refused to let in the door. If we call this kind of sexual encounter an assault, then women who have been weathering what they call bad sex will suddenly have justification for the icky feelings and shame that follows them home in the cab. And yet, we’d really rather just hit the showers.

Any Mammotheers who feel up to it (and not all of us do right now) should have a look. I can’t get it out of my head.

Slate’s got a piece on Stormy Daniels’ In-Touch interview…

Watching him try his hand at politics or business or romance is always an exercise in disenchantment. He has spent his career training the vines of glamor to grow on a decrepit trellis. It takes five minutes, in one position, to figure out those vines are dead and the trellis is termite-ridden.

The Trump of Daniels’ recollection salutes the readers of 2018 like an underwear-clad ghost in an adaptation of A Christmas Carol that nobody asked for. Daniels may have felt disappointed or confused or annoyed when the fast-living playboy she imagined turned out to be grubby and boring, unworthy of a proper fling. But the last thing any of us should be upon hearing her story is surprised.

Note, this is quote is not from the In-Touch interview, but from the Slate article (Katy Waldman)

@Moggie

“she talks about what he’s like down there”: Christ, please tell me that “down there” refers to Florida…

… apparently, “down there” refers to on the bed, as in “a slob watching TV on the bed”….
