Well, the reason I mentioned Penn Jillette rather than Scott Adams is that Jillette is actually intelligent, and has contributed to some good activity on critical thinking at times; he just also has a blind spot big enough to drive a fleet of trucks through when it comes to his own libertarianism, and seems to sincerely believe that because he managed to make it anybody can, and therefore anybody that doesn’t is just lazy. (And his libertarianism contributed to some of the just plain wrong episodes of Bullshit, such as the one where he tried to argue second hand smoke wasn’t a thing.)

Adams, on the other hand, falls much more into the ‘stupid person’s idea of a smart person’ category. He’s not that bright, is a walking example of both Dunning-Kruger Syndrome and the Salem Hypothesis (which says that if you find someone who claims to be a scientist and a creationist, they’re probably an engineer) and has spent years creating his own little bubble of adoring fans. He’s basically a prototypical edgelord.

Thanks for that. As noted, having family members who were teachers, and some having also grown up as the smarter kids in the area, helped make sure my childhood was both encouraged and kept grounded. I’ve been somewhat lucky with my life, and I recognize that a good chunk of it was luck.

(Oh, and I’d forgotten you were in Australia. The information I gave above was probably enough to identify the ten year old in question: Terence Tao. Australia may have given the world Ken Ham, but I’m sure Terence helps make up for some of that.)

Also, re: fascism in furrydom. Oh, good lord, what happened now? As if the Rocky Mountain thing wasn’t bad enough, with the ousted con chair apparently being a sovereign citizen on top of it all…

Things up here have been moving in the other direction for the most part. The next iteration of the con I was at two weeks ago is in a hotel that has an entire page on its accessible rooms with things like lowered beds and counters for people in wheelchairs, along with TTY keyboards; one of the regular presenters is non-binary who runs a panel discussing such things.

I got to wake up in my own bed this morning, next to my lawfully wedded (and still beloved) husband. Already thankful for the good things in my life.

Then got up and made apple strudel for breakfast.

Our boiler died this afternoon, so no heating and no hot water.

I’m thankful I’m at home to deal with it. (Not that Thanksgiving is a thing in the UK – but it should be.)

There is irony in a Liberal celebrating censorship, particularly of the corporate business kind. Censorship almost was totally applied to the Left–which if anything shows identity politics is not a proper Left movement. It shows the bankruptcy of the Post-Modern Left when the Right is considered more subversive and is censored by the elites.

Perhaps some self-reflection is warranted?
