Forget your troubles, c’mon get happy!

By David Futrelle

It’s a rarity in this year of terrible, but tonight has been a night of actual good news! Dems are winning elections, and Reddit has banned the toxic cesspool known as the Incels subreddit! Celebrate while you can in this open thread!

No trolls. Fuck trolls.

Thanks, Trump!

And this is the icing on the cake:

Oh, and there’s this:

Let’s all celebrate by laughing at Jeff Sessions!

Meanwhile, on Reddit:

HEALTH NOTE: Though cheered by tonight’s news, I’m still dealing with a shitstorm of health issues. I will return to regular posting as soon as I can, but I’m not sure when that will be. Thanks again for your patience and your support!

I’m really surprised all that nonsense surrounding Donna Brazile didn’t have any impact on voter turnout.

h God, I just discovered the best thing. The best thing.

On top of everything else, Danica Roem is also the lead singer in a thrash metal band. Because sometimes the world is awesome after all.

These results have given me some hope. With that hope, I’m gonna throw some more bucks at Doug Jones in Alabama. May he humiliate “Judge” Roy Moore!

Husbeast was in the ER with abdominal pain last night and I* was texting him election results. The state house in VA *may* have flipped blue; apparently there are a some re-counts to be done. *crosses fingers*

Hope you start feeling better soon, David. Don’t worry about us, we’ll talk amongst ourselves till you get back.

*I was having flashbacks of being in the ER with my dad and couldn’t deal, so I noped on home. Husbeast (bless him) was fine with it. He probably just has a strained muscle since the CT scan ruled out appendicitis. He’s resting at home today and will follow up with his doc ASAP.

@SFHC:
You’re talking about the spiritual descendants of the folks who thought Elvis was coming to corrupt their kids with ‘Sex, Drugs, and Rock&Roll’. Of course they think being in a metal band is a bad thing.

Dude of color in a turban just became mayor of Hoboken, y’all. Lesbian mayor in Seattle, y’all. Revenge is a dish best served queer, trans, and brown ?

But, also, the white women are at it again, so let’s not get too too hopeful ?

Took a poke around Trumpcentral, AKA Freerepublic, because true 24 carat sterling idiocy is something to be treasured (and because Ozy has stopped updating over at vikingkitties).

They’ve got it all figured out. Virginia was lost because it was never in play in the first place, but if it was in play it was stolen by all the illegals and government workers in north VA. Trump didn’t campaign for Gillespie because Gillespie is a Bush crony and wasn’t on the Trump train and Trump knew this from the start, so he sent out the secret bat signal and all the Trump voters stayed home or they’d have won in a landslide ….

Anyone got a couple Advils laying about? I’ll be needing them after my shower.

Does this mean uh…the popularity of the group is waning?

Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no…no, no, not at all. I, I, I just think that the.. uh.. their appeal is becoming more selective.

It always boils down to the ol’ “stabbed in the back myth”, doesn’t it?

Off topic, sort of, but Politico is reporting what we already know: trump supporters know trump won’t help them, they just want to hurt people.

Boy, it’s almost like “economic anxiety” is a bullshit excuse!

“I think he’s doing a great job, and I just wish the hell they’d leave him alone and let him do it,” Schilling said. “He shouldn’t have to take any shit from anybody.”

Yeah, there’s a word for this. A leader who’s beholden to nobody and who nobody can stop. What’s the word? Democracy? No, no. That’s not it. Oh, I know! It’s authoritarianism. People really, really need to stop thinking that it’s impossible for it to happen here. It’s not like this woman is the first to say stuff like this. There are people out there and a lot of them that can be persuaded that authoritarianism will make their lives better. It’s baffling as fuck. But American’s are absofuckinglutely not so freedom and liberty loving that they’ll never fall for it.

Then there’s this

“You’re not a fan of equality?” I asked.

“For people who deserve it and earn it,” he said. “All my ancestors, Italian, 100-percent Italian, the Irish, Germans, Polish, whatever—they all came over here, settled in places like this, they worked hard and they earned the respect. They earned the success that they got. Some people don’t want to do that. They just want it handed to them.”

“Like NFL players?” I said.

“Well,” Del Signore responded, “I hate to say what the majority of them are …” He stopped himself short of what I thought he was about to say.

Sure, he wants equality. For white people. But don’t call Trump voters racist. That’s mean!

And contrast that with this

“We just don’t have the workforce,” said Liston, the city manager. “If they are employable, and have a skill set, basically they already moved out of the area.”

Some of the later-in-life blue-collar workers who are still here can be loath to learn new trades. “We’ve heard when working with some of the miners that they are reluctant because they’re very accustomed to the mining industry,” said Linda Thomson, the president of JARI, a non-profit economic development agency in Johnstown that provides precisely the kind of retraining, supported by a combination of private, state and federal funding, that could prepare somebody for a job in Polacek’s plant. “They really do want to go back into the mines. So we’ve seen resistance to some retraining.”

So, people are being given opportunities to retrain for available jobs and they aren’t taking those opportunities. But it’s all the fault of black people and Mexicans that they’re poor. And Republicans are for personal responsibility and not racist at all. How dare you say they’re racist!

What a depressing article. I hate to say that people or towns should be given up on, but when people are so willfully impervious to facts, what else can you do? I kind of think the only thing left to do is help the young folks in these towns get out and into metro areas where there’s more opportunity for jobs and education and more diversity. It sucks, but I don’t see any solution.

So, people are being given opportunities to retrain for available jobs and they aren’t taking those opportunities.

To be completely fair to them, the article does say it’s older people. The coal miners in the UK had the same problem – lot of the older guys simply dropped out of the economy in Derbyshire and Yorkshire when the pits closed.

I’m not looking forward to retraining at ALL since I have to retire from my lifetime career soon – probably won’t bother. It’s intimidating (and not necessary in my case – decent pension).

It’s no excuse at all for being a racist asswipe, or for looking for someone else to blame instead of looking in the mirror, but I can understand how they feel about retraining.

I’m glad to see more trans-women getting elected to office!

On a more personal note, over the last few days I’ve been realizing that I screwed up big time.

Without going into too much detail, there were two options to pick from for my surgery and I picked the wrong one. It made the best sense from a practical point of view, it just wasn’t the best choice for me as a whole person. The worst part is that I knew it, I just tried to fool myself into believing the practical way was the best way.

Most important thing of my entire life, and I manage to fuck up royally, par for the course I guess.

“But, also, the white women are at it again, so let’s not get too too hopeful ?”

Yah, that is depressing. Even with Trump, and even with white women in Virginia as a group being tugged leftward, half are still voting for their privilege. Fuck white women.

I have to say that the couple of sexist comments saying that white women are only terrible because daddy is, and that basically implied that us white women don’t think for ourselves, were a little unneccessary, though.

Regarding coal, saw this factoid recently. Toyota has a plant in Kentucky that employs more people than there are coal miners in all of Kentucky. One plant.

Jesalin, accept my internet hug. That’s truly unfortunate.

Christ, that Politico article was depressing.

The woman who says that nothing could change her mind about Trump. It’s a useful question to ask: what could happen which would make you realise you were wrong? When the answer is “nothing”, that’s a worrying sign.

The guy who says “It’s not like he sleeps in till noon and goes golfing every weekend, like the last president did”. Uhhh…

Same guy thinks Obama may have been the antichrist, and Trump the saviour in the end of the world, which he expects to happen real soon.

The people – more than one – who admit that Trump hasn’t delivered on his promises, but say they continue to support him because “he does what he says” or “he’s kept his promises”.

This is not rational. This is what a cult sounds like.

For a good snork to cheer you up:

A Republican New Jersey official who posted a meme mocking the Women’s March was defeated in an election last night by a woman who was inspired by his remarks to run for office

Well played, Ms Bennet. Well played. 🙂

Shadowplay,

I know some people are intimidated by change and I understand that. What pisses me off is the hypocrisy. If you’re going to have a “bootstraps” mentality when other people – particularly those who don’t think or look like you – fall on hard times, you have to apply that for yourself. Don’t brag about how hard working and tough you are, unlike the millenials/people of color/liberals who just want everything handed to them and deserve to be poor because they don’t work or they majored in the wrong thing or whatever, and then refuse to retrain because you want the way things used to be back. That’s what gets me. They’re happy to yell “get a job!” at others but don’t hold themselves to the same standard. If you want unfettered capitalism to shit on everyone you don’t like, even if it hurts you too, fine (well not fine, but you know what I mean). But you have no right to complain when the hurting you too comes to pass.

I don’t mean “you” as in you personally. I mean “you” in general. Just to clarify.

Of course, I’m on record as a universal basic income supporter and one of the many reasons is that older workers who find that the job market has left them behind will have the option to retire early and be okay.

” It sucks, but I don’t see any solution.”

It’s an old progressive idea, but a goodie; offer guaranteed employment. Anyone who wants to work, should be able to, through the government. A lot of people in industries that are going belly up lost all faith that the same thing won’t happen to the next one, and *some*, not all but *some*, of the resistence to retraining is because of that.

Of course, like anything economic that makes sense, this would be driven into the ground by Republicians (ie. their rich donors).

ETA: Yes, a universal income would be nice as well. We could always do both.

As a young male, glad the subreddit for incels got banned

It leads emotionally insecure men down a big fucking hole hard to get out off

There is nothing wrong with not being able to have sex or go on dates. There is everything wrong with whinging about it and blaming women for it

Good news

Guaranteed employment doesn’t work for people with disabilities. I would prefer a universal income system.
