By David Futrelle

It’s a rarity in this year of terrible, but tonight has been a night of actual good news! Dems are winning elections, and Reddit has banned the toxic cesspool known as the Incels subreddit! Celebrate while you can in this open thread!

No trolls. Fuck trolls.

Thanks, Trump!

And this is the icing on the cake:

Oh, and there’s this:

Let’s all celebrate by laughing at Jeff Sessions!

Meanwhile, on Reddit:

HEALTH NOTE: Though cheered by tonight’s news, I’m still dealing with a shitstorm of health issues. I will return to regular posting as soon as I can, but I’m not sure when that will be. Thanks again for your patience and your support!

Another pretty interesting one in the 17th century is the Salzburg Witch Trials. Mostly male teenage victims of lower social status in this one, a pattern that it said to have spread all the way into southern Germany in the following years and influenced who was seen as suspicious when it came to witchcraft accusations.
It seems to start with one couple accusing their teenage son(?) and spread from there to more than a 100 victims. As in many late witch trials there are a lot of children accused here, too, just so you’re warned before looking this one up.

Her cave is pretty neat. Still swing by for a look when I’m in the area. It’s peaceful. 🙂

Knaresborough Zoo was a horrid place though. So glad that got shut down. You don’t keep animals for entertainment.

It’s interesting to track the various local laws about witchcraft, especially whether informants got a share of convicted witchs’ estates, against number of prosecutions.

ETA: we nearly re-criminalised witchcraft here by accident. The law that abolished witchcraft offences did introduce the offence of being a ‘fraudulant medium’. That was intended to stop fake mystics profiting from grieving families. But then that Act was about to be repealed because people were doing the Doris Stokes thing and it seemed harmless enough. But then it was realised that a total abolition of the later Act would mean overturning the abolition of the witchcraft offences too.

Exactly. Confiscation was a factor. So was inner community conflicts and removal of economic competition which could also be seen as a “rational” motive in our modern view.

But it gets even more interesting when you consider that at least in some HRE regions witch hunting was at times something that caused the participants not inconsiderable financial losses. For example when the victims where from the poorer strata of society and thus there wasn’t even enough property confiscated to pay the executioner. Because then…you ask yourself what did the authorities gain by prosecuting these witches? What was so valuable to them that they were willing to pay extra? And so we come to all the myriad little factors that lead to starting or nor starting a witch hunt…. I love my job. 🙂

Wow…I didn’t know that. Never mess with laws unless you’ve really thought through the implications, huh?

The doctrine of ‘implied repeal’ used to be a bit of a nerdy legal topic, and it was only interesting for throwing up examples like the witchcraft one. But now with Brexit it’s really come into the fore. Like if the government goes down the ‘Great Repeal Bill’ route, is it suddenly 1974 again?

Something with sharp edges? Are you serious? He could inflict paper cuts with those?

Cotton balls. He can collect cotton balls.

A little context?

@LittleLurker:

Just like changing computer code — you risk introducing a bug. Reverting an older commit included, if that commit had included a bug fix.

Good practice is of course to have a single purpose for each commit, but even then there can be interactions and side effects if commit B depends on A and A is later reverted.

This does suggest a pure-engineering argument against things like omnibus bills and various sorts of riders.

But sometimes there’s a justification for those in terms of horse-trading: putting both halves of a political quid pro quo in a single bill ensures against the side that passes theirs first reneging on the deal. Combining them means either both pass or neither do.

@PeeVee: Ah.

You can understand my confusion. Not only was there no quote of Shadowplay in your comment, which was way down the page from theirs, but in that comment Shadowplay hadn’t named Roem’s entirely-forgettable standard-issue-Repug-troglodyte opponent:

The guy Danica Roem defeated is proving himself gracious … by writing a letter to the editor of the WaPo.

Where’s the bang head gif?

Agreed on the sore loser part.

If only voters would realize that guys like him and Moore really are bog-standard Republicans, rather than unusually odious exceptions, maybe we’d finally see the end of the zombified, twisted-180-degrees, lurching horror show that used to be the Party of Lincoln before getting bitten by Nixon that time.

I didn’t know about Helen Duncan.
How come that law about witchcraft was still in effect at that point? Was it on purpose and just applied to different kinds of cases now -like a fraudulent medium- or was it something that hadn’t come up in so long that people just forgot it was still there?

@Who?
The simplest answer is that Trump merely said he would do something that he absolutely no intent on actually doing. Remember, this is the same person in which the phrase, “I’ll keep you in suspense” clearly means, “I haven’t the slightest idea”.

Yet I’ve always thought it was rather mind numbingly obvious why Trump does not have any pets: His very presence physically repulses animals in much the same manner cockroaches, Nazgûl, Red Pillers, Clowns and Dane Cook repel normal human beings. Much like the ringwraiths in particular, Trump’s very being is an affront to life itself, radiating with the malice and ambition of the dark lord Sauron himself. All he needs is for Putin to have a tower surrounded by molten lava.

Two “hesitate to say” things (lest they be jinxed, or don’t get your hopes up).

Usual pal here still has issues, with the bug bites that made her so sick. Still hurts. It is almost gone, looks like, but is lingering. She’s putting various topical OTC med ointments on it.

I said, try this skin cream I got. It’s like, the Aldi version of Oil of Olay?
Product is named “Lacura Night Cream”, plenty of info online for those interested.

Did put some on. And is now cautiously optimistic that – this might’ve stopped it. Continual burning and itching from, poison bug venom? I guess.

I think it helped! She says 🙂
It is nice stuff, for the skin, at an affordable price, I found it at (US) Aldi’s.

Mine hesitation….
I need a new job, I found a post online, it’s a bit beyond me or outside of what I know, people are saying (respond to it) DO IT!!! And I just did type up a general email to send, T looked it over here and said it’s “perfect! send it!” so I think I’m going to try 🙂

Why not?

Good luck on the job prospects.

Speaking of which, for a couple months I was taking the HR Block Tax Preparation Course. I can’t believe it, but I passed. I’m not as confident on me getting a position considering I’m a college student, but who cares I beat it.

@Surplus to Requirements

Okay, sharp edges. I now understand why stamp collecting could be problematic. But cotton balls? Because I see danger everywhere, I could see how he might hurt others with those. Don’t get me started.

So I’ve decided to allow Donald Trump to while away his time until Death mercifully takes him by listening to soft classical music. Nothing exciting, just some soothing music. I might also allow some space music/ambient music/chill music.

@ Oogly,

I think you can get something, depending on where you are. Urban area here and I have been looking at things, and I see a lot of jobs for tax preparers, even if just seasonal, and many that say “we will train you.”

So if you already have this training done, I’ll bet you can get something right away. And this can be something for future things too, that’s a great thing to have on your resume 🙂

Another idea, – contact HR Block about any other office jobs they may have.

I, and most people I know, have always had to hustle, we hear ya! 🙂

And sometimes just showing up is all you need to do. There are plenty of people who are uncertain and confused as to what to do. And on the other end, employers wanting people and – no one shows up for the jobs.

They need you just as much as you need a job, don’t forget 🙂
And sometimes just showing up or emailing back is most of it done.

🙂 You can do it!

More right-wing hypocrisy. The Family Research Council was founded by James Dobson and is listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center for its homophobia.

Conservative Activist Perkins Reportedly Covered Up Sexual Assault Against Teenager

By Daniel Politi

The head of the Family Research Council allegedly kept quiet about claims that an Ohio Republican lawmaker assaulted a teenage boy in a hotel two years ago. Perkins was told that then-candidate for the Ohio legislature Wesley Goodman’s allegedly fondled a supporter’s son during a conference in Washington, according to the Washington Post.

“If we endorse these types of individuals, then it would seem our whole weekend together was nothing more than a charade,” the boy’s stepfather wrote to Perkins, head of the Council for National Policy, to demand action. Perkins replied that “this will not be ignored nor swept aside” but he did say the issue would be “dealt … with prudence.” The apparent actions by Goodman apparently didn’t come as a surprise to Perkins who referred to “similar incidents” in a letter. Perkins called on Goodman to step down from the race, but he continued and eventually won a seat in the legislature in November.

Goodman, now 33, resigned his seat earlier this week after state lawmakers learned about “inappropriate behavior related to his state office,” according to Ohio’s House speaker. Goodman, who is married and repeatedly touted his faith and anti-LGBT views, was reportedly seen having sex with a man in his office.* Emails and documents reviewed by the Washington Post “show a small circle of people discussed the complaints about Goodman before he went on to later misconduct at the statehouse,” notes the paper.

Perkins refused to comment but Goodman supporters expressed anger that they were kept in the dark about something that seems to have been a bit of an open secret among some conservatives. “We are so sick of people knowing and doing nothing. If someone knew, they had an obligation to say something. That’s what you do. That’s how you hold society together,” said Thomas R. Zawistowski, president of Ohio Citizens PAC, a conservative group that endorsed Goodman.

A Republican ‘Family Values’ State Legislator Quits After Having Sex With a Man in His Office

An Ohio Republican state legislator who consistently touts his faith and his anti-LGBT stances resigned this week after being caught having sex with a man in his office.

Representative Wes Goodman, who is married, was reportedly seen by someone who is not a staffer having sex with a man inside his Riffe Center office. The witness told Ohio House Chief of Staff Mike Dittoe of the situation early Tuesday afternoon, according to the Columbus Dispatch.
