It’s a rarity in this year of terrible, but tonight has been a night of actual good news! Dems are winning elections, and Reddit has banned the toxic cesspool known as the Incels subreddit! Celebrate while you can in this open thread!
No trolls. Fuck trolls.
This is the first time a wall of news notifications hasn't been a nightmare in god knows how long pic.twitter.com/NpTaW5QK6e

Dems have won all three of the marquee off-year races — NJGov, VAGov, NYC Mayor — for the first time since 1989.

Democrats decimated Republicans across the country tonight, at every level and in every branch of state government.

Thanks, Trump!
And this is the icing on the cake:
Trans woman Danica Roem (D) just defeated anti-LGBTQ candidate Bob Marshall (R) in Virginia, becoming the first trans state legislator in America.

The man who wrote the anti-trans bathroom bill just lost the election to a trans woman. Let that sink in. https://t.co/KFEZXSYvMy

Let’s all celebrate by laughing at Jeff Sessions!
Meanwhile, on Reddit:
Reddit has banned the Incels subreddit. About fucking time; it was a cesspool of misogyny and violent hate. pic.twitter.com/8RieXtxZLN

HEALTH NOTE: Though cheered by tonight’s news, I’m still dealing with a shitstorm of health issues. I will return to regular posting as soon as I can, but I’m not sure when that will be. Thanks again for your patience and your support!
Since Trump is the type of person who would abuse a pet for having an accident or making noise or whatever other transgression that pets typically commit, I think it’s a good thing that he doesn’t have pets. It’s also telling that the media isn’t suggesting he get a dog or cat and Republicans aren’t gifting him with one the way Ted Kennedy presented the Obamas with Bo (or is it spelled Beaux?).
Far as I know he’s never had a pet in his life (unless his wives count).
Trump is reputed to be a germophobe though, and it’s a fairly well documented claim. No surprise in that case that he’d not have a pet, or indeed much to do with his children as babies/toddlers (also sadly well documented).
Someone made the joke on facebook that this is because he’s an “ivory” supremacist.
Totally with you peeps above re Trump & pets. Just the thought of it makes me shiver.
@wwth, you’re a horror aficionado, right? Have you seen The Babadook? It’s a cool rainy Saturday here and the kid and I need a spooky movie for the afternoon. Is it good, in your opinion?
@Arctic Ape,
That one was almost as good as your Ook! letter a few weeks ago. Keep this up and that new religion will happen, I’m warning you π
Of course I’ve seen The Babadook! 3 or 4 times, actually. I thought it was great.
No pets for Trump, please!
No plants.
Possibly a rock garden.
As I recall, it was Valentin who reassured me that it’s okay for hideous, horrible people to have rock gardens because rocks can’t be hurt.
Still, I hope that Donald Trump waits a while to start a rock garden. I’m hoping he’ll mature. Maybe when he’s 90?
No, no rocks either! Five year old Trump was once caught throwing them at a neighbor’s baby.
Perhaps a small beanbag?
Welp, Trump just tweeted this out within the last hour:
“Put big game trophy decision on hold until such time as I review all conservation facts. Under study for years. Will update soon with Secretary Zinke. Thank you!”
My translation:
“People saw through this ploy. Better ‘re-evaluate’.”
I think Trump should go live with the Nome King and his minions.

….*oogh*….
The thing I posted above is once-lost “Crack Master” from Sesame Street.
@WWTH
If only Trump could be brought down by an egg.
@Kat
I’m pretty sure Trump already has a rock garden. Inside his head.
Babadook was awesome! Wow. Creepy eerie stuff and the acting’s top notch. I knew Esse Davis was good, but the wee boy is so impressive. And it’s very assured for a first-time director.
Given the film is apparently a metaphor for motherhood & bereavement, I think the ending is appropriate.
No rocks for Trump – he can have one of those revolting Trumpy Bear things that I assumed were a joke at first ??
Okay, I can see that the rock garden idea for Trump was all wrong in several ways.
But now I worry about the beanbag and the Trumpy Bear. Somehow the man would use those to hurt others.
Stamps. He can collect stamps.
The guy Danica Roem defeated is proving himself gracious … by writing a letter to the editor of the WaPo.
Where’s the bang head gif?
@Kat,
Trumpy Bear hurts simply by existing, but you’re probably correct.
When I first saw the ad via a FB friend from Kansas, I was certain it was a spoof. People combing its hair, taking it golfing, pulling a US flag from its spine…. brrr.
ETA
@Shadowplay, WHY OH WHY DID I READ THAT OHMYGOD IT’S DISGUSTING
I…I had no idea Trumpy Bear existed. Why? Why is this? I feel bad making fun of a stuffed animal, but why does it have that stupid supercilious expression, and is there Scotch tape underneath that tie?
Frankly, I wouldn’t even put Trump in charge of Sims. They’d end up with heaps of garbage everywhere, sirens in the distance, and perma-disgusted, stressed out moodlets.
In other news, the US has now moved beyond satire:
Elderly man accidentally shoots wife at Tennessee church during talk about church shooting
Not to change the subject, but I just ran across this quote about Baba Yaga, and loved it! I
The Witch figure is irresistible to me. Throughout millennia of patriarchy, the Witch has been there to show us another way. As Pam Grossman notes in the foreword to my other new book, Literary Witches (illustrated by my brilliant collaborator, Katy Horan), the Witch is the only female archetype whoβs not defined by relationships to other people. Her worth isnβt tied to her beauty or fertility or nurturing qualities, but to her knowledge, wisdom, and creativity. The Witch is her own wild animal, an outsider in touch with the reality of life, including its gruesomeness, darkness, and hilarity. Baba Yaga is an old woman who lives in the woods in a magic chicken-legged hut, doing what she wants and cracking herself up with shenanigans. What could be better than that?
Pam Grossman
Oooh, witches! My favouritest favourite subject and my current project! Give me talk about witches and imaginations of witches any day! π π
Literary Witches, huh? Thanks for the hint. π π
@ jeanette & little lurker
You may find the story of the Pendle Witches interesting. That’s like the British version of Salem.
Prefer Mother Shipton meself. π
The Pendle Witches do look interesting. Might have a closer look at that.
@ shadowplay
“Mother Shipton, a Yorkshire mystic who lived in a cave. Which at the time was better than living in Yorkshire; just as it also is now.”

Hey, all American Mammothteers of a certain age…I recently turned 50. Aren’t I supposed to get something, like an Old Person Kit, from the AARP (American Association of Retired People)?
Possibly, everything is online now. My spouse got the AARP magazine for years, now it’s stopped coming.
