It’s a rarity in this year of terrible, but tonight has been a night of actual good news! Dems are winning elections, and Reddit has banned the toxic cesspool known as the Incels subreddit! Celebrate while you can in this open thread!
No trolls. Fuck trolls.

Dems have won all three of the marquee off-year races — NJGov, VAGov, NYC Mayor — for the first time since 1989.

Democrats decimated Republicans across the country tonight, at every level and in every branch of state government.

Thanks, Trump!
And this is the icing on the cake:
Trans woman Danica Roem (D) just defeated anti-LGBTQ candidate Bob Marshall (R) in Virginia, becoming the first trans state legislator in America.

The man who wrote the anti-trans bathroom bill just lost the election to a trans woman. Let that sink in. https://t.co/KFEZXSYvMy

Reddit has banned the Incels subreddit. About fucking time; it was a cesspool of misogyny and violent hate. pic.twitter.com/8RieXtxZLN

HEALTH NOTE: Though cheered by tonight’s news, I’m still dealing with a shitstorm of health issues. I will return to regular posting as soon as I can, but I’m not sure when that will be. Thanks again for your patience and your support!
@ shadowplay
He once wrote down 10 things*; and the first five are “I’m best; it’s all about me!”. I wouldn’t trust his priorities.
(*Well, dictated them, but that’s management for you)
First two. Then he tells you to take a day off. (I’m Catholic.)
(*Well, dictated them, but that’s management for you)
Nah. Can’t be management. They weren’t focus tested first. 😛
@ shadowplay
Do you think Moses smashing them was like running them through the shredder?
I suppose we can count “I am the Lord God.” as being like the “From…” bit in a memo. But then it’s:
“No gods but me” (Clingy)
“No graven images” (That’s like ‘unfriend anyone who’s not me on Facebook’))
“Name in vain” (‘Don’t talk about me unless it’s to say I’m great’)
“Sabbath day” (‘You have to spend all your free time with me’)
Now I don’t want to Internet diagnose; but that’s a lot of red flags for a relationship/covenant.
Religion is a rabbit hole (and tends to be lethal in discussion threads) so shall we shortform it?
“No gods but me” (Clingy) – twitter verified checkmark. Lots of other “gods” thereabouts at the time. 😛
“No graven images” (That’s like ‘unfriend anyone who’s not me on Facebook’)) – It’s not in the Catholic list (instead we get two on coveting – which actually separate out wives from goods and chattels). Not saying it’s a bad commandment – the representation is never the object and can never be the object.
“Name in vain” (‘Don’t talk about me unless it’s to say I’m great’) – Or “don’t use me to justify your crap? Don’t put words in my mouth?” Those are equally valid interpretations. But yeah, this one has always bugged me slightly.
“Sabbath day” (‘You have to spend all your free time with me’) – “I made this whole place for you. Take a day off once a week, as even I do that, to admire it and say thank you for it. All major credit cards accepted.” 😛
Edit: Just noticed. Talking about this in one tab, reading Elliot Rodger’s manifesto in another. Talk about brain-lash. 🙁
Ten commandments? Oy!
I have an interesting problem regarding the “clearly mental illness x” problem if anyone wants to weigh in.
I have a pretty good reply planned, but it’s the kind of reply that I can do because of my experience. I’m essentially going to demand diagnostic criteria and the quotes that the person claims represents evidence of mental illness. Rhetorically it’s easy to keep pushing the fact that they supposedly care about evidence. I’ve done it before and it’s resulted in some spectacular meltdowns, especially in concert with suggestions that this person is incompetant at explaining why they feel the way they do.
The first problem is that I’m concerned that this still results in hyper-focusing on the accusers behavior and that seems problematic given the way that this already happens to victims. I’m not sure that’s avoidable since the accuser’s words are going to be focused on in general, but here it’s about irrational and illogical criticism of the accuser.
The second is in the nature of the response, not just everyone can demand diagnostic criteria and communication samples and see if the other person even tried. On one level people should be more familiar with them and with what they look like, but I’m concerned about things I’m not going to see because of my life experience.
Have any of you heard of girls chase? It’s a pua site, and claims to have the largest visitors of any such sites.
The authors attempt to intellectualism their misogynistic ideas.
Check out these articles on their ideas of “female morality”:

It was only very recently that I learned child marriage is legal in (most parts of???) the USA. How is that even possible? Over a thousand kids under the age of 15 and down to 10 had marriage licenses issued in the USA between 2000 and 2015 (figures are just from Wikipedia, so not like I’ve actually researched it or anything). I get that this is a tiny number in a huge population, but it’s shocking that it’s legal.
Jesus. The UK is pretty shit for teenage pregnancies, definitely, but why isn’t this statutory rape?
Sorry 10? Did I hear that right?
Rest delited for selfcensory.
@opposablethumbs
I live here, and I only learned it was legal a few days ago. It’s appalling. I hoped that my home state of California was an exception, but nope, legal here too.
Roy Moore almost certainly isn’t going to be a senator
So there’s that.
Pisses me off that Trump’ll be able to come out of this smelling like roses though (and with added credibility among his fans – as if that were needed).
I don’t share that writer’s optimism that Moore won’t be senator.
I also don’t get why a sexual assault victim would vote for a someone who bragged about committing sexual assault. Her white supremacy was that important to her? Damn. But that’s beside the point.
Republican voters don’t mind voting in rapists at all. They’ve already proved that. The best we can hope is that the senate does expel like they’re threatening. But doing that would expose them as hypocrites because they all wound up backing Trump. So I’m not 100% confident they’ll even do it. They’re probably hoping the whole thing blows over.
Somethink a bit less dark. A very snarky and in times even funny Q und A for the post-Weinstein Era.

@no one: I’ve never heard of that site. I’ll have to look when I’m at home, and using a VPN. o__o
I live here…
@wwth – Cillizza is pretty good for a talking head. I’d not bet against him when he makes a call, put it that way.
In news which is both funny and depressing in equal measure:
Jared Fogle tried to get out of jail by claiming he’s a ‘sovereign citizen’
@Shadowplay:
Unless it’s a Weeping Angel, of course.
My hat is most definitely off. Well played. 🙂
Oddly, I was just thinking about Doctor Who. I’ve not watched it since Tom Baker’s time (couldn’t be doing with Peter Davison) but … it’s been 50 years. He still hasn’t fixed the camoflage circuit in the Tardis. Was Gallifrey the legendary procrastination planet or something?
Oh yeah, a difference in the previous call-outs is that the person casually a diagnostic label was excusing misogynistic behavior. Here I am trying to force them to take both the accuser and their evidence seriously. It need not depend on the outcome of any particular accusation, but that just means I have to think of the different kinds of potential outcomes in advance.
Perspectives can get really complicated.
@mrex
Disagree. I was once beaten bloody by an alcoholic boyfriend because I wouldn’t let him drink up my bill money.
Freelance writer and former model Cassie Lane had supper at one point with Steven Seagal. As a result she’s says she’s not surprised at an allegation by Portia de Rossi that Seagal sexually harassed her.
@Shadowplay
True. Though God never actually mentioned that abortion was against the law in the manual, either. It’s not like it’s banned under the ‘no murder’ restriction, since Exodus 21:22 sure doesn’t seem to think that fetuses are people– the punishment for causing a miscarriage was specified to be a fine.
Though it’s not like the fundies give a single shit about what’s written in the Bible anyway, just that citing it gives them a convenient excuse to be bigoted assholes but still feel righteous.
Finally, Donald Trump gets the affection and respect he deserves! (So sweet!)

@Shadow: A recent episode suggested that the famous Tardis materializing sound was because the Doctor has left the parking brake on lo these many years (eons?), so who knows?
@Nequam – Ha! I could believe it, quite easily. Has there ever been a Doctor who was, you know, practical? Decent with his hands? 🙂
Really should start watching again, it does sound like it’s gotten really good – but where the hell am I going to find the time for it! A lot of Doctors have passed into the timestream since I stopped watching. 🙁
Did try Torchwood series one. Got bored about ep 8 – it seemed to me to be mostly “Gwen’s peril of the week.” That put me off – it limited itself way too much, despite some superb acting by all concerned.
Side note out of curiousity – your username wouldn’t happen to be a spelling variant on Naqam, would it? If so – very nice choice 😀
