Happy Indictment Day! Open thread

Lock him up!

By David Futrelle

Three, three indictments in one! Three former Trump campaign officials are in the hot seat today. Former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort is the big name on the list (along with his pal Rick Gates), for such fun things as conspiracy against the U.S. and money laundering. But even more intriguing is the GUILTY PLEA of relatively unknown Trump foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos, whom Mueller has presumably flipped, who seems to have been doing some active COLLUDING WITH THE RUSSIANS.

So here’s an open thread to discuss the news and any other indictment fun that transpires today.

NOTE: Sorry to have gone missing for so long. I’m still dealing with a combo of health issues that have made it very difficult to work. Thanks again for your patience and support.

Guess they were right about the Buttery* Males after all

*Buttery (adj): eagerly servile, like a sycophant

Now, we look to see who decides to flip. Not just Flynn, Manafort, etc. But who in Congress works out the calculus as far as whether it’s a good idea to tie their fate with that of this admin…

President Trump woke before dawn on Monday and burrowed in at the White House residence to wait for the Russia bombshell he knew was coming.

Separated from most of his West Wing staff — who fretted over why he was late getting to the Oval Office — Trump clicked on the television and spent the morning playing fuming media critic, legal analyst and crisis communications strategist, according to several people close to him.

Oh. Yes. Oh hell the fuck yes. Mainline that distilled schaudenfreude right in my bloodstream. This plus the fact that his trans ban has been shut down for good makes this a good start to the week.

So, we’re paying Trump to watch Fox News all day and go on golf trips, basically. He couldn’t have just retired and moved to the Villages in Florida for that?

And conservatives think poor people are lazy and useless…

Chronic health issues are an absolute pain in the ass to deal with. Do what you gotta do, David.

Manafort, huh? I was kinda figuring him or Flynn to start. It’ll be morbidly interesting to see how far this goes.

I was sort of stricken with spasms of ironic disgust when I saw this add at the top right of the WHTM page:

Yeah, that one’s gonna get a lot of support here.

This is OT, but I’ve just had an idea which I think maybe I should run past at least someone first before trying it. I want to create a Tinder profile where I pretend to be some alt-right dreamgirl, with a picture of some blonde, blue-eyed, frolicking-through-a-field-of-grain woman, and a profile to the effect of: “Proud antifeminist traditionalist European lady looking for a strong European gentleman to become the #Tradwife of. #StopWhiteGenocide. #MAGA. #ThereAreOnly2Genders”, etc., etc. Then, when any Spencer or Yiannopoulos aficionados message me, I’ll say: “Just kidding. Tool.” Do you reckon this’d be funny? Or is it just petty and potentially an invite to retribution?

Honestly, I’m pretty sure I’m not the first person to have done this…

Yes.

I find that excessively petty. I would prefer to stay above their level.

Also, what will you do if you encounter someone attracted from the other part of the profile ? Would not they be innocent collateral damage ?

Abars01, from my memory you are
1) Australian;
2) Male.

Please don’t appropriate other people’s identities in the name of a “joke” that would, indeed, be petty – also not funny, and a glaring example of the privilege you have to possibly avoid the retribution a woman would face.
It is bad enough when male alleged journalists do this shit in pursuit of an article about “how I finally get what the ladies are complaining about”.

Its denigrating to people who deal with this stuff to treat it as an occasion for shits & giggles.

I am not gonna lie that I laughed for a solid 5 minutes when I found out about the indictments. The schadenfreude is strong with this one.

You should only pretend to seduce Nazis if you’re going to lure them into the woods and shoot them.

It might be funny for you. Maybe not so much for the women who get shit on every day on dating sites. It’s already dangerous for a woman to use Tinder. Think about how your hilarious joke might increase that danger. Some Nazi messages you, gets burned, and then hides that he’s a Nazi to the next woman he contacts. Instead of quietly swiping left on his profile, she innocently goes out on a date with him and … ??? Gets out of that unscathed, you think?

I’m actually glad you asked before going through with this idea, so think things through before you play pranks on Nazis. Who is going to take the hit if your prank goes wrong? If it isn’t you, then maybe don’t do it.

@everyone

Yeah, folks, don’t worry, I decided against doing this even before I read your responses. It wasn’t a serious or longstanding idea in the first place, just something I came up with, chuckled about, and then quickly discarded after browsing the pages of Lauren Southern, Tara McCarthy, Wife With a Purpose, etc. on Twitter and rolling my eyes at the manufactured personas they put on to solicit the approval of alt-right men, and all the alt-right men who give it to them in the comments. Sort of like how the thought of, say, throwing eggs at the Westboro Baptist Church momentarily makes you grin, before you quickly realize that actually doing that would only result in a lawsuit.

Instead, I’ll just buy Wolfenstein, make a Nazi-killing supercut of footage from it, and put it on YouTube. No incitement to harass women, but should ruffle their feathers to about the same extent.

I am glad the indictments have started. I’m glad our fake president is clearly sweating, and I hope this ends with every last one of those fuckers in jail, without bail or possibility of parole.

But I would be lying if I said I had that much faith in our system.

I had a long talk with my mom about generational ethics and stuff. It was kinda interesting. She’s a lot more conservative than I thought – she just applies her conservatism solely to herself and figures other people should make their own choices about such things.

from Slate, Joy Reid’s take on “but, but, but… her RAINY YUMWUN !?!?!?!?”

which, if I understand correctly, concerned a U.S. Committee on Foreign Investment, which Clinton was not a part of deciding a trade deal before Clinton was Secretary of State. The “scandal” comes from the donation of funds to Clinton’s presidential campaign by someone who had already sold their interest in the company involved in the trade deal….

d’ I get that right?

And the dumpster fire tweets “… why is the focus not on Crooked Hillary and the Dems?” maybe ’cause you’re the president…?

Also interesting is the FBI probe into Whitefish Energy‘s shocking (and shockingly short-lived) $300M contract to rebuild energy infrastructure in Puerto Rico…. Interior Sec’y Ryan Zinke might be advised to keep an eye on this….

It’s the aftermath of a hurricane: the storm shoves the entire swamp over the town, then people go out one by one and shovel it out of the way.

But the smell will remain for a long time.

Apparently, lying to the FBI is ok if you’re 29 years old:

I mean, cut the guy some slack! A 29-year-old conservative? He’s just a kid! His brain hasn’t finished developing yet!
