Happy Indictment Day! Open thread

Lock him up!

By David Futrelle

Three, three indictments in one! Three former Trump campaign officials are in the hot seat today. Former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort is the big name on the list (along with his pal Rick Gates), for such fun things as conspiracy against the U.S. and money laundering. But even more intriguing is the GUILTY PLEA of relatively unknown Trump foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos, whom Mueller has presumably flipped, who seems to have been doing some active COLLUDING WITH THE RUSSIANS.

So here’s an open thread to discuss the news and any other indictment fun that transpires today.

NOTE: Sorry to have gone missing for so long. I’m still dealing with a combo of health issues that have made it very difficult to work. Thanks again for your patience and support.

Basically, the US is now the small town in “The Lottery”. We’ve been entered against our will. Every day, we go through this gruesome and senseless sacrificial ritual. Every day, several innocent citizens are chosen at random to be thrown into the volcano to appease paranoid, angry white guys and satisfy the NRA’s voracious appetite for profits.

Just like in the story, nobody seems to know why we do this, or how to stop it. Those in power are silent. We’re told we have to put up with this because of a 225 year old sentence on a piece of parchment. We’re told not to question the parchment, or the guns. We’re patted on the head and told the angry men slaughtering us are just suffering from “mental illness”. We’re told, by the Law and Order crowd, that laws are useless because some people disobey them. We’re told not to “politicize” shootings, unless the shooter is brown. We’re told that the solution to this raging inferno is to toss more matches around.

It doesn’t help that the Bible is filled with violent revenge fantasies. So many Dominionists believe Christian righteousness is all about smiting enemies, and that feeds right into the NRA’s agenda.

@WWTH

I honestly think that Jesus himself could come down to earth and tell Republicans to get rid of their guns and they’d just call him a hippy libtard and renounce Christianity.

Jesus: ‘Considering the first Commandment, I think it’s time you all got this gun problem under control.’

Repub#1: WTF? Who the hell died and made you boss?

Repub#2: He’s probably a Muslim in disguise, trying to weaken the great United States of America! Look at him, he’s not even white!

Repub#3: Why do you hate us Christians?

Jesus: *gives up and becomes an atheist*

ETA: Oh bloody fucking hell.

Jesus: “What’s a Muslim? I’m Jewish.”

Repub #3: “AAAGH!”

Repub #1: “ALEX JONES WAS RIGHT!”

Repub #2: “THE POWER OF HITLER COMPELS YOU!”

Then he gives up and becomes an atheist.

Disappointed Jesus having to live in a red state needs to be a comedy TV show like, now.

Huh? “Thou shalt have no other gods before me”? Not really applicable, unless you think people are literally worshipping guns. Ok, you might have a point.

They’d need to invent new numbers just to keep track of the death threats.

@Moggie

Good point.

For some reason I thought ‘Thou shalt not kill’ was number one. It does work in its own way though.

How’s that different to any show with a female lead? =P

Oh no! The top four are all basically variations on “KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!”. Priorities, you know?

All in all, it’d probably be milder, just due to a lack of rape threats.

I thought it might be vision related. I had it tipped towards him though.
Weird about Jjj’s timing. Morbidly fortunate in that the immediacy makes them look worse.

@WWTH
He has the puma stare and I only saw brief snatches of it for the first week. After that he would come into the yard a little and then run away as soon as I looked at him. “Spooky” popped into my head for some reason.

I know, it breaks my heart. I hope his kidneys get their function back. At least he’s more comfortable.

@Alan, @Moggie,
Ohmygodyes read Good Omens! I have a comic strip version of the scene where Crowley & Aziraphale get drunk & discuss why earth shouldn’t perish. Makes me laugh to the point of tears. There’s also a tv series in production right now with David Tennant as Crowley ?
@Jenora, yes absolutely – Small Gods is where it’s really fleshed out

Re Jjj’s post – I read it completely differently so that’s weird. Didn’t see anything trollish at all. I’ve gone back and re-read several times to clarify, too.

There would be so many headsplosions from that…probably quickly followed by many, many death and rape threats.

I’m interested. What do you see in Jjj’s post?

It looked like a comparison between MRA’s getting upset at shooter stats, and an unsourced “u feminists” not being upset at infanticide stats. So there’s the weird insertion/assertion about mothers killing their children and feminists not being upset about the fact of it.

I think I can see how it might be a badly worded attempt to point out that MRA types need to just accept the problem, but it does set off my alarms. It would be nice to be sure.

@Mish:
Not sure which comic you’re talking about, but Phil Foglio (of Girl Genius, amongst other things) did a couple of Good Omens comic pages as part of an Alzheimer’s fundraiser, based around the scene that involved talking about the sword:
http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/funextras/stories/goodomens.php
Granted, I think he made Crowley look too demonic there. Crowley really should be more ‘the banality of evil’ incarnate.

But aside from Small Gods, there was a fun discussion between the gods in The Last Hero about why you never put things like ‘chocolate’ on the list of ‘thou shalt nots’ in your religion. Which ended up with the bard screaming at his god at one point over exactly that ban, and one of the other gods just turning to another and saying ‘See? Told you.’

And then Feet of Clay, which involved a golem being something of an atheist, complaining about the gods. After getting struck by lightning, the golem commented, “I don’t consider that a particularly convincing argument.”

Yeah, he had fun with the idea.

Monstrous Regiment holy book was alive, kept in ring binder, every so often new “___ is an abomination unto Nuggan” bits would show up.

Babies, dwarfs, rocks, cats, crop rotation, the smell of beets, and the color blue were among the many abominations before the end of the book.

It looked like a comparison between MRA’s getting upset at shooter stats, and an unsourced “u feminists” not being upset at infanticide stats. So there’s the weird insertion/assertion about mothers killing their children and feminists not being upset about the fact of it.

It was less aggressively misogynistic than what we usually get here, but for me I start giving a side-eye at “u feminists” all on it’s own. Or actually at “They say how dare u demonise”. That’s just me though, and I acknowledge that my prejudice against people who can’t be arsed to write legibly might be irrational. Although I’ve yet to see anyone defy my expectations.
But looking at this:

But no one ever says all men are mass shooters, just that most mass shooters are men.

?

I bet u feminists dont get upset when it’s said that mothers are more likely to commit infanticide. In fact MRA types, mostly father rights groups tend to bring up the gender infanticide to make a point on how mothers aren’t automatically better parents.

he states the following
“But no one ever says all men[…]” ⇔ ‘feminists should blithely accept that mothers are inherently more likely to commit infanticide’
although he is a bit coy about it. But basically, it’s a false equivalence created in order to set up a more expansive bad-faith argument, although he didn’t read the playbook well enough to understand that he should fetch agreement with the false equivalence before hitting with the “therefore…”, which in this case was a blown wad about “father rights” “MRA types” having a point we should listen to.
It’s somewhat convoluted, but the disbelieving smiley is what cements it, as I see it.

Also, as a rant it’s hardly more than a sputter.
