Three white supremacists have been charged with attempted murder after one of them fired at a group of antifascist counterprotesters after a speech by neo-Nazi celebrity Richard Spencer at the University of Florida in Gaineville yesterday.
The Miami Herald reports:
Just before 5:30 p.m., just as protesters outside Spencerās speech at UFās Phillips Center were wrapping up, Gainesville police said the trio started heckling some anti-Spencer protesters with Hitler chants, Nazi salutes and threats. At one point, cops said, convicted felon Tenbrink pulled out a gun and the brothers encouraged him to use it.
He fired a single shot that missed the group, police said, then sped off in a silver Jeep. An off-duty Alachua County Sheriffās Office deputy spotted the car 20 miles out of town around 9 p.m. and arrested the group. The Fears brothers are held on million dollar bonds in the Alachua County jail. Tenbrinkās is $3 million.
Surprise, surprise: Two of the three were amongst the alleged “very fine people” marching with their fellow white supremacists in Charlottesville.
Tenbrink, 28, and William Fears, 30, were spotted at Charlottesville, the site of the largest white nationalist gathering in years that erupted in violence. Fears identifies himselfĀ on Twitter asĀ āCharismatic leader of a White breeding cultā andĀ tweetedĀ āblood and soil,ā the notorious Nazi slogan.
This is terrorism, plain and simple. It’s appalling the story isn’t getting more attention in the media.
Here are some tweets with more details on what happened.

And these three aren’t the only violent white supremacists who should be getting a lot more attention from the press — and the cops.

The ProPublica piece is a long one but I think a necessary read for anyone concerned with the rise of a violent fascist movement in US.

My thoughts exactly.
Meanwhile, everyone in the White House continues to lie about Trump’s shockingly callous treatment of a grieving Gold Star mother and the congresswoman who has stood up for her.

Rachel Maddow has a pretty convincing theory on why Trump doesn’t want to talk about Niger: that the 4 US soldiers died in part as a result of the Trump administration alienating the government of Chad, which pulled its troops out of Niger after Trump put the countryĀ (a longtime ally in the war on terror) on his alleged non-Muslim ban list for an extremely stupid reason.
Maddow connects the dots on how Trump adding Chad to his travel ban may have gotten soldiers killed in Niger https://t.co/PYk203GxVM

In a whole other arena of terrible, things are even worse in Puerto Rico than official reports acknowledge:

But also… who is raping all those men? Men, that’s who. Sounds like men have a big “raping people” problem, just like feminists have been saying since forever. Congratulations to your director: the first step in solving a problem is admitting that it exists.
@ Peptastic:
Sorry, I’m not buying it. Because:
“Indeed, after the university refused to let Spencer rent back in September, in the wake of the terrible events in Charlottesville, Viriginia, he threatened to sue. The University of Florida had little choice but to relent.”
The operative words are in the first sentence, there. They already refused him once, on perfectly acceptable grounds: the physical safety of their students and property. And if Spencer wanted to argue, in a court of law, that the First Amendment protects terrorism and incitement to murder…UF should’ve called his bluff. It would have been good for Florida and the country to see that hateful little traitor get humiliated by the law in its majesty, instead of our having to rely on random vigilantes with a decent right-hook. And it would have been a darn sight cheaper for them, too. “The expenditure…is the measurable cost of the First Amendment…” My ass. And by the way, what if his fellow-traitors HAD actually been able to hit the broad side of a barn, and SUCCEEDED in killing somebody? Would that have been an acceptable part of the “measurable cost”?
@Valentin
It could also be ringworm – a pale circular patch with a raised red outline is a pretty classic presentation. If it is, be careful, as it can jump from animals to humans very easily (my sister once caught it off a wild bird).
@Lea
And that as the ‘pinnacle of humanity’, they should be gifting the rest of us with their genes, whether or not we want them. Especially if we don’t want them. They seem to like that part way too much.
These people, to any rational outside observer, are also obviously not the pinnacle of anything other than a waste of the energy a sperm put into fertilizing an ovum.
If there’s a way for IG to never show profiles again while searching, I’d like to learn what that is. OT
But today I found out that once personal trainer who had his rant on anti-fat acceptance go viral is a full blown MAGA/Trump 2020!!!/Fuck-your-feelings asshole. Ugh. Found his profile from searching for a friend and he’s just despicable. I don’t expect anything from someone who’s buddy-buddy with Tomi Lahren. Trash will always be with other trash.
And I’m sure NOTHING be heard from him or the likes of him regarding nazis inciting violence & being murderous because “the left is more violent!!! Hillary’s emails!!!! Snowflakes are triggered!!”
Back to topic: about that breeding cult thing (ugh, UGH I hate those words together. Nasty) I hope that gets investigated.. It sounds so dark and insidious.
@Violet:
Sure, and men who stay home and get blind drunk should expect to get burgled by people who take advantage of their being passed out cold to break in and steal their stuff. It stands to reason.
Would just once like to see men who complain about being victims of some other crime wake up to the sort of dismissive shaming and incredulity that rape victims typically get.
I can’t believe my buddy Tom stole some cash from my wallet when I was passed out! I thought he was my friend!
Uh, you went over to Tom’s place and drank so much you passed out? Wasn’t that kind of irresponsible of you?
What the hell does that have to do with it? The guy just up and TOOK my MONEY!
Well, were you doing something to make him think that you wanted to give him some money? Have you ever given or lent Tom money before?
I may have but so what? He has no business to just TAKE it without ASKING!
Hmm, are you sure you’re not just regretting having given Tom your money in a fit of drunken generosity? It’s really just your word against his, you know.
sfhc
thanks ))) I will take him in the vets this morning and maybe take my self to pharmacy after just in case I have ring worm….
@Valentin, I hope you are enjoying your shore leave aside from hurricanes and kitty problems.
TMI warning for ringworm:
In case you’re unaware, this is a common (and happily rarely serious) skin problem for some humans and animals. You may know it as, I think, ŃŃŃŠøŠ³ŃŃŠøŠ¹ Š»ŠøŃŠ°Š¹.
Anyway, despite what we call it in English, its actually a fungus (or a group of them), not a worm. A lot if the time a vet or doctor can diagnose it just by looking at the sore with a Wood’s (blacklight, UV) lamp. Sometimes they have to look at skin scrapings under a microscope, or send to a lab.
Generally, like the mites that Shadow play mentions (they also do microscopy of skin or hair for this), it can usually be treated successfully with a cream.
In either case, its important to
clean up the hair and skin that cats shed, especially where they sleep, (everywhere?) so they don’t get reinfected by it.
Mites shouldn’t spread to you, but ringworm can, so keep eye on your own skin. If you don’t see or feel an itchy spreading sore or group of them, especially on bits of you that you touch cat with, you should be fine, and if you do, your pharmacist should probably be able to give you a cream for it.
Same story as for cat: don’t share towels; wash your sheets, clothes etc separately from anyone else’s, wash your hands after touching cat.
Your kitty is a cutie.
croquembouche
yes I know about this one š my friend experienced this after she get it from the dog. then I get it from her after. of course, then we were children. if it is ringworm it will be quite bad because he always rubs his face on everything ? but this morning actually it already reduced – always what happens when you have to go to doctor or vets. but he has other problems. for example he lost his voice – he can purr but not meow. and makes vomit each day.
@kimstu
Right? We’re expected to take the feelings and problems of White MAGA Voters with the utmost seriousness, but maybe we should start victim-blaming them every time they whine about something. PARTICULARLY when they use the word “rape” in a completely inappropriate context, like “divorce rape”. If they want to co-opt that word and bandy it about so lightly, they should have to suffer the same contempt and dismissiveness that actual rape victims so often get.
“Oh, you feel demographically threatened? Well, what did you expect? Maybe you shouldn’t be wearing that recessive skin pigment.”
“Somebody scratched FASCIST on your new Confederate flag pickup truck? That’s what you get for taking it out in public. Vandals will be vandals!”
“I know you don’t want to pay child support and lose the house and kids, but your ex-wife is a valuable, respected member of the community. More importantly, she can swim slightly faster than other ex-wives. Don’t ruin her future.”
@wwth
That’s a good idea. I’m not sure he has contacted the school, I’ll suggest it.
@moggie
Hahaha – yes. Rape is a male problem that just gets constantly framed as a female one, the same way racism from Nazi scumbags constantly gets framed as the problem of black people. No. Women have to deal with the consequences of the rape problem, not the problem itself.
@all
Thanks for listening xx
I feel a lot better today because I remembered that I need to feel sorry for my director because he is a stupid, weak human being who is full of hate because he’s allowed his fear to overmaster him. He will never even be able to admit the existence of his anima, let alone draw strength from it (I did a lot of Jung when younger haha) Thus he will never evolve and will choose to remain stupid and weak. And that’s sad.
Not quite as sad as the damage he might be doing to other people though, and I’m debating what to do in terms of the group.
I rang my friend for an update on the kid. No news. He has emailed, but suspects mother has cut off the kid’s access to email and is probably forbidding him to come to the group (it’s a voluntary support group for trans teenagers, so she can withdraw him without questions) He’s officially reported it to everyone he can think of. Fingers crossed, I guess.
Anyway I feel a lot better. As for men…I guess I just have to think of my feminism as a kind of “asshole filter”. In the end, if someone doesn’t want to date me because of my views, that tells me all I need to know about them.
I love “asshole”. Everyone has an asshole, and that makes it one of the world’s few completely gender neutral insults š
@Violet,
So sorry – what awful stuff you’re dealing with! Pls feel free to vent here any time. Take good care of yourself.
@Valya,
So nice to hear from you! Hope you’ve found your loved ones all safe and well. Your kitty is gorgeous, and I hope he’s ok.
If I may add to the excellent advice already given above – vomiting sometimes is ok for cats, but frequent vomiting is often serious and needs attention (we learnt this the hard way).
I wonder if it’s worth it finding a better vet? If it’s even feasible, that is.
Let us know how it goes <3
ETA: saw Violet’s latest post right after I posted this – glad you’re doing a bit better!
mish )))
I hope you are okay too!
yes I just returned with first cat (there are 3 and 2 will go today later and tomorrow morning). I spoke with different doctor, woman this time, and she said this is virus and red on his fur is discharge. she says vomit is because he coughs. she gave me some antibacterial tablets for side effect of virus and I will continue painkillers. and then she said bring another cats to check them.
she said it can be normal because 2 cats we rescued and they only recently received vaccination, so if he carry this virus before then vaccination will not stop fully. she said probably because he is stressed.
I asked about ringworm and she check his skin and find scabs but she said this is not ringworm and there is no problem there. they are from old fleas, which now gone because I gave flea treatment already. lucky because he sleeps in my bed!
@Valentin
Good to hear š It’s nice when it’s something fairly simple. May kitty feel better soon.
On a completely unrelated note:
Anyone know of any decent games?
My usual plays to relax are Starbound, Stardew Valley (kind of silly, but infinitely relaxing and sweet), Sheltered, and Craft the World (think Dwarf Fortress with less tantrums and randomness). I like the sort of find/craft/make games – not much combat, it’s boring as hell, so I’m looking for things along those lines – that don’t need a mega PC to run. š
@Valya,
You’re a good cat parent! My three are rescue babies too, and they do often have health issues. This latest vet sounds good; very thorough and smart. Hope this works out for the kitties.
Enjoy your time on the land, and I hope that your niece is doing ok?
Yikes, flashback — it’s so disgusting the number of fleas that fall off a cat after you give it treatment!
I suspect there’s an error in translation there, or some nuance that didn’t get through, because anti*bacteria*l does nothing against a *virus*.
Both my cats were sick (almost died) at the shelter, got better at their foster home, were fine except for a minor eye infection when I got them… then got sick again within a couple hours when I dropped them off at the shelter to be sterilized. Stress definitely triggers a response.
mish
I didn’t yet get to visit (( so not so good. but also they have a kitten now! so maybe this will help. I still have one month and half before I go back, so I hope I will have time. usually I only see them once each year.
@shadowplay
I am very very happy it’s not ringworm. in my apartment: 2 cats, 1 kitten, 2 people, 2 chinchilla. it would be very bad!
numerobis
it’s okay I understand that there is no for virus, she said because there can be second infection in his throat, because of discharge from his nose and from vomit and she suggest two weeks antibacterial will help improve this. and painkiller is anti-inflammatory. all just to reduce stress so he can eat some food and grow strong.
I didn’t see how fleas fell off him. but maybe that is good. ?
Is it just me, or is there something especially adorable about cats tucked into bed like people? Something about that little face poking out over the covers is just the cutest thing! Kinda like swaddled baby animals.
Speaking of animals…
On marvelous recommendations from fellow Mammotheers, I spent large parts of the weekend binging BoJack Horseman and wow that show is as well-written as it is bleak. The episode “Hank After Dark” was particularly apropos given both Donald Trump and Harvey Weinstein. Obviously inspired by the Bill Cosby allegations, they broke down the pattern of excuses and victim-blaming to the nigh atomic level, a pattern that repeated itself like clockwork for Trump and Weinstein.
And watching Todd cluelessly ruin his good idea for a driving app for women in season 3 was as facepalming as it was darkly comedic. I just finished season 4’s “Hooray! A Todd Episode!” and it was pure gold! I gotta say, the episodes that take a break from the self-destructive title character are a welcome relief. I just hope we get some more Princess Carolyn-centric episodes; curious as to how her type-A personality developed.
Hello.
The ProPublica piece was interesting and quite frightening to read. The ones in the article are not the usual facho-behind-the-keyboard which are often exposed here, and it is not particularly reassuring, especially when almost nothing is (legally) done against their crimes while they are boasting all over the place what they are doing and what they are advocating. I mean, the danger they represent is clear, why nothing can not be legally done against them ? They clearly have a terrorist behavior (training, hate advocating, violence picking…).
Glad nobody have been hit by the shooter. But what is next ? Will people need to go to a protest with bulletproof vest and helmet ?
OT : Steam is still “lagging” too much when it has to deal with offensive groups
It is painful to have to use this platform to use some games (i recently had to suscribe in order to get Blood Bowl 2 to play with a friend). I wonder if Gog is better (but their catalog seems smaller, alas) ?
Have a nice day.
This can never be. You see, when women hurt men, it means women are awful. When men hurt women, it also means women are awful because our awfulness is the only reason men hurt women.
Obviously I’m being sarcastic, but I do think that this is the way that a significant portion of men and even some women think.
I’ve been rereading the very long and very troll filled threads on this site in the wake of Elliot Rodger’s shooting rampage and it’s just astounding the number of people who basically said “how dare women fear men, we’re not all like that! However, I totally understand his pain. It’s really tragic for men when hot blonde women don’t themselves at them.”
That time was also I think when regulars started taking a really hard line on ableism. If anyone’s wondering why we’re so meany pants about that here, blame the dozens and dozens of people who showed up in those threads to very helpfully inform us that it’s not about misogyny, he was just crazy.
@weirwoodtreehugger
Your last point (about people here not tolerating ableism) is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately… about how this is one of the very few places in real life or online like this (Shakesville being the other example I have). As someone who’s been institutionalised before, and who deals with mental illness, I’m forever trying to tell people that “mentally ill” does not mean “bad” and it really hurts. The stigma and misconceptions about mental illness really do hurt real people in tangible ways every day, and I hate seeing “crazy” used as a lazy insult or a way to discredit people.
Long story short, I wanted to thank everyone here for taking a hard line on ableism. It is so nice, and welcoming, and humanizing to be a part of this community because of that.
So, like DF without everything that makes DF awesome? š
š Pretty much. It’s DF without quite as much micromanaging and having actual graphics. Still fun though.
Dwarves in Dwarf Fortress have actually been remarkably stable since the Needs release. Toady put in a ton of psychological needs, some of which have no way to be met. As a stopgap measure to prevent tantrum spirals being completely inevitable, he made dwarves a lot more mellow. I haven’t had a tantrum since that release. …Mind you, I’m a skilled player so I didn’t get many beforehand, but it still makes me sad.
@The Adjunct Sometimes we mess up, but we try.
I found out last night that my son has been swallowing some of the ‘antifa is soooo violent!’ talking points. Turns out he does spend some time on 4chan. My husband and I did try to refute some of it. Any advice on how to deal with this? Strangers online I can refute no problem, but I”m having a ‘freeze’ reaction, maybe because I feel that the stakes are higher. Thoughts on best approach (or even worst ‘what not to do’ ones)?
