Three white supremacists have been charged with attempted murder after one of them fired at a group of antifascist counterprotesters after a speech by neo-Nazi celebrity Richard Spencer at the University of Florida in Gaineville yesterday.
The Miami Herald reports:
Just before 5:30 p.m., just as protesters outside Spencerās speech at UFās Phillips Center were wrapping up, Gainesville police said the trio started heckling some anti-Spencer protesters with Hitler chants, Nazi salutes and threats. At one point, cops said, convicted felon Tenbrink pulled out a gun and the brothers encouraged him to use it.
He fired a single shot that missed the group, police said, then sped off in a silver Jeep. An off-duty Alachua County Sheriffās Office deputy spotted the car 20 miles out of town around 9 p.m. and arrested the group. The Fears brothers are held on million dollar bonds in the Alachua County jail. Tenbrinkās is $3 million.
Surprise, surprise: Two of the three were amongst the alleged “very fine people” marching with their fellow white supremacists in Charlottesville.
Tenbrink, 28, and William Fears, 30, were spotted at Charlottesville, the site of the largest white nationalist gathering in years that erupted in violence. Fears identifies himselfĀ on Twitter asĀ āCharismatic leader of a White breeding cultā andĀ tweetedĀ āblood and soil,ā the notorious Nazi slogan.
This is terrorism, plain and simple. It’s appalling the story isn’t getting more attention in the media.
Here are some tweets with more details on what happened.

And these three aren’t the only violent white supremacists who should be getting a lot more attention from the press — and the cops.

The ProPublica piece is a long one but I think a necessary read for anyone concerned with the rise of a violent fascist movement in US.

My thoughts exactly.
Meanwhile, everyone in the White House continues to lie about Trump’s shockingly callous treatment of a grieving Gold Star mother and the congresswoman who has stood up for her.
Specifically, this entire John Kelly story is fiction. Not one bit of it actually happened. pic.twitter.com/eGSQU0S3wc

Rachel Maddow has a pretty convincing theory on why Trump doesn’t want to talk about Niger: that the 4 US soldiers died in part as a result of the Trump administration alienating the government of Chad, which pulled its troops out of Niger after Trump put the countryĀ (a longtime ally in the war on terror) on his alleged non-Muslim ban list for an extremely stupid reason.
Maddow connects the dots on how Trump adding Chad to his travel ban may have gotten soldiers killed in Niger https://t.co/PYk203GxVM

In a whole other arena of terrible, things are even worse in Puerto Rico than official reports acknowledge:

@Gussie Jives:
I agree vehemently, because, you know.
Generally speaking I view people who want to make it illegal as misogynistic monsters and treat them accordingly. This is, I’ve been told, an extreme position and also I should care about their feelings. About their feelings:
The best claim in their favor is that they are ignorant about every single thing concerning abortion. The history. The science. The actual statistics. It’s actual societal impact (which I can’t help but feel is their actual issue).
Which is of course an argument that their feelings and they themselves should fuck right off and get themselves properly fucked, because ignorance and a feeling of “Whaa-whaa-whaa!” is not a reason to kill women.
People who (honestly) propose limits on abortion are generally ignorant and looking to find a middle ground between people who want to kill women, and the ones who don’t. But they shouldn’t be allowed to take that middle ground of 16/18/20/22 weeks, because it’s leverage for the forced birthers, and also, why should we even be able to force women looking for an abortion at week <insert arbitrary number here> to carry to term?
What about this non-sapient, non-sentient, non-neuroresponsive foreign body makes it special? And what about it’s assumed specialness makes it okay to force women to risk their lives to bring it into this world?
And if your argument is ensoulment, I’ve got here an ensouled magnum bottle whose singular desire is a high impact encounter with your teeth, and you can’t deny the desires of something ensouled, can you?
And now, for something completely different:

While I’m generally of the opinion that dogs are smarter than cats, if forced I’d have to acknowledge that it is a comparison of “bag full of rocks” vs. “bag full of hammers”.
I’m reading that Spencer is now due to speak in Poland (but Poland might not let him in). Also that Hungary kicked him out.
They may hate immigrants, but they hate Nazis worse.
My dog is all of 13-14lbs and she terrifies all the guys that Iāve had out to do work on the house with the near-rabid barking and snarling. The lady who did the grouting in the kitchen didnāt get barked at nor a snarl though.
I told her she needs to get some other women together and start a business. I would hire them to do all sorts of jobs around the house and my new plumber is a woman – she is so awesome and funny even when unclogging things with grossness clogging them. I canāt be the only person whose dog is sexist and prefers women do stuff around the house.
I thought Hungary had elected a bunch of Nazis to form its government recently? The Atlantic certainly seems to think so:

@Msexceptiontotherule:
A question, if I may: is it a shelter dog?
The reason I’m asking is because I’ve heard many tales about shelter dogs who are generally cool but they have issues with men, assumed to be caused by abuse. (By men, as is known)
@Surplus to Requirements, Observer of the Vast Blight-Wing Enstupidation:
Have a care, you’re looking to be assailed by avowed centrists who’d feel terribly put upon by that article’s insinuation that responding to an invitation directed at neo-nazis would mean that you are, in fact, a neo-nazi.
From the article:
I knew a white supremacist who worked in India, doing translations, earlier than that. (Him trying to be yon intellectual racist at me was always delightful, what with his near-high-school education and name-dropping philosopher’s names at me in conjunction with some unrelated bit of statistics and I’d just ask: “Cite?” (Him arguing that colonialism was a net gain gain was met with “My actual British friend said that as self deprecating humor, but let me grab a new beer, and then I’ll deal with you” whereupon he showed what the racist’s superpower is: ‘Always be in another room’))
Nope. The one dog we got ( Dennis – from an aunt who couldn’t care for him any more) absolutely hated women. He’d not bark much but he’d growl so frequently it was like sitting in a car any time a woman came into the house – or he’d bark constantly if one went into either of the neighbour’s gardens if he were out the back. He was well trained, absolutely fine with the kids (both sexes), fine with me, but my partner got to the stage where she’d not stay at home alone with Dennis , just in case.
After a few months trying we had to find him a new home – passed him on to a mate who’s older and a “committed bachelor” (he’s not, he’s gay, but in his time you were a bachelor so far as the world was concerned and thats how he prefers it to still be. His call.) They were very happy for years. Dennis lived to a good age. Sweet natured lad too, so long as there were no women about. š
Yes my dog was a shelter rescue from one of the local county system known for a high kill rate. She bonded with me right away, other people…some people she tolerates in time and others she just doesnāt ever. Sheās my first ever dog and was 4 months old when I adopted her, the shelter didnāt know anything about her background thus I donāt know what life was like for her before then. Honestly it could just be that men sound scary to some dogs, not intentionally just the voice depth and timbre of speech in men. If itās a smaller dog that could intensify the experience.
Yes Iām guessing on the last bit though she was with me during the last part of a severely abusive relationship and would try to protect me even at her size – he never hurt her which I think she figured out, if she was in my lap he wouldnāt hit me so she spent lots of time on my lap. The way dogs will do everything for their human, selflessly…I can never repay that debt to her, sheās a special dog for sure.
@Feline: I would have agreed about the relative dimness of cats and dog until I got my current cat who is of great intelligence. So there are always exceptions.
He is sexist to, but it’s men he hates. He so rarely has to deal with them because the majority of my family and friends that visit are all women. When men come to read the various meters he gets really aggressive. He hates my dad (sensible thing) too.
Since everyone is discussing dogs…last summer, my spouse was driving home around midnight, and a dog happened to be standing in the middle of the street. Spouse stopped the car and opened the door, and the dog jumped right in the car.
Brought dog home, dog had a collar with her owner’s name and phone number on the tag. Dog was a relatively small, white (mostly) mutt, and obviously older. Spouse called the owner. The woman said, very sleepily, “This is the 3rd time this month!”
Apparently, this dog – Daisy was her name – was in the habit of escaping her owner’s house and wandering around at night.
We kept the dog until the next morning, then spouse brought Daisy back to her owner. We kept our bedroom door shut that night, but I could hear Daisy scratching at the door, trying to get in. Our cat took refuge in the garage.

Despite the new policy, I bet the MRA/Incel/etc garbage is left in place.
Since when did this become a site where people think dogs are smarter than cats?
Re: Cat Intelligence vs. Dog Intelligence
Watch when a cat yawns, then tell me just how big of a brain can fit into a skull that’s 85% eyes and teeth!
My cat is better at ACTING smarter than the dog, I’ll give him that.
Well, corvids are incredibly intelligent, and their skulls are small and most of the room is all eyes and beak, so … š
Bigger than Alex the Grey Parrot’s, I’ll bet. Obviously, it’s not the size, it’s how you use it.
A friend of mine had, at one point: two cats (an overweight tabby named Henry, as in Henry VIII, and a sleek black cat named Sinbad), two dogs (a german shepherd named Shannon and a big spaniel named Chudleigh), and a budgie. They also had a very large back yard, thankfully. As in ‘riding lawnmower’ large.
Chudleigh (yes, it was a very English family) was the intelligent one and the escape artist of the bunch. My friend said he’d been sitting looking out the front window when he saw Chudleigh run across the front yard despite having been supposedly locked in the back. The spaniel got up to the side of the road, stopped, looked both ways up and down the street, and then dashed across the road.
My kitty (well, one of my kitties) died yesterday. He was very clever, very independent, a bit of a pest. Very affectionate, but only on his terms, when he wanted it. He’s the sort that would be out until two in the morning, then paw at the window until I woke up to let him in. I’d get a meow and then he’d expect some food before he’d let me go back to sleep. He was sort of a jerk, but he was also my only friend for the first months home from the oil patch, before I started working in the lab. He was the first one to know something was wrong with me when I had a medical emergency a few years ago, and when I was back from the hospital he refused to leave my side until I was better again.
He didn’t paw at my window night before last, he wasn’t clever enough to notice that there was poison in the food that was left out by some awful person. Someone’s been upset at the animals coming into their yard around here, apparently, and a few pets have died. He wasn’t clever enough to recognize it. I’m glad at least that he made it home to his sun rock before he died.
Cats and dogs are both very smart, they have to be to survive in a human world. Just, you know. Not quite enough.
Sorry for being a downer! Just had to say.
Omg, Scild, I am so sorry!
There’s a special place in hell for people who willfully poison pets. This makes me so very angry.
Is Dave okay?
Thanks, PeeVee. I am relatively sure that’s what happened because he was not the first pet to be killed by poison over the past few months. A dog died a while ago in the same suspicious circumstances. Someone’s angry about animals snooping in their yard, and apparently feels that justifies subjecting them to a slow, agonizing death.
Ugh. Humans really are the worst animals.
EDIT: @damoflances, Dave is likely just dealing with migraine stuff. He’s still tweeting regularly, so he’s out there! Patience <3
@Scild
OMG! I am so so sorry!!
All too often it seems that the defining characteristic of humanity is not our ability to reason, it’s our ability to be cruel.
@Scildfrega
I so sorry to hear that. I hope the person responsible is discovered.
I’m so sorry Scild. It just hurts my heart to hear that.
@Scildfreja:
D: What a jerk! No kitty deserves to go that way.
