Three white supremacists have been charged with attempted murder after one of them fired at a group of antifascist counterprotesters after a speech by neo-Nazi celebrity Richard Spencer at the University of Florida in Gaineville yesterday.
The Miami Herald reports:
Just before 5:30 p.m., just as protesters outside Spencer’s speech at UF’s Phillips Center were wrapping up, Gainesville police said the trio started heckling some anti-Spencer protesters with Hitler chants, Nazi salutes and threats. At one point, cops said, convicted felon Tenbrink pulled out a gun and the brothers encouraged him to use it.
He fired a single shot that missed the group, police said, then sped off in a silver Jeep. An off-duty Alachua County Sheriff’s Office deputy spotted the car 20 miles out of town around 9 p.m. and arrested the group. The Fears brothers are held on million dollar bonds in the Alachua County jail. Tenbrink’s is $3 million.
Surprise, surprise: Two of the three were amongst the alleged “very fine people” marching with their fellow white supremacists in Charlottesville.
Tenbrink, 28, and William Fears, 30, were spotted at Charlottesville, the site of the largest white nationalist gathering in years that erupted in violence. Fears identifies himself on Twitter as “Charismatic leader of a White breeding cult” and tweeted “blood and soil,” the notorious Nazi slogan.
This is terrorism, plain and simple. It’s appalling the story isn’t getting more attention in the media.
Here are some tweets with more details on what happened.

And these three aren’t the only violent white supremacists who should be getting a lot more attention from the press — and the cops.

The ProPublica piece is a long one but I think a necessary read for anyone concerned with the rise of a violent fascist movement in US.

My thoughts exactly.
Meanwhile, everyone in the White House continues to lie about Trump’s shockingly callous treatment of a grieving Gold Star mother and the congresswoman who has stood up for her.
Specifically, this entire John Kelly story is fiction. Not one bit of it actually happened. pic.twitter.com/eGSQU0S3wc

Hey @realDonaldTrump I know how much you love calling out FAKE NEWS so here’s your daughter-in-law quoting a transcript that doesn't exist. https://t.co/TheR8FGrWY

Rachel Maddow has a pretty convincing theory on why Trump doesn’t want to talk about Niger: that the 4 US soldiers died in part as a result of the Trump administration alienating the government of Chad, which pulled its troops out of Niger after Trump put the country (a longtime ally in the war on terror) on his alleged non-Muslim ban list for an extremely stupid reason.
Maddow connects the dots on how Trump adding Chad to his travel ban may have gotten soldiers killed in Niger https://t.co/PYk203GxVM

In a whole other arena of terrible, things are even worse in Puerto Rico than official reports acknowledge:
Real death toll in Puerto Rico is probably 450 — much higher than official count https://t.co/msCyhMDyyQ

But our country still has its heroes. Along with Rep. Wilson and all those working diligently to save lives in Puerto Rico, there is this dude:

I honestly don’t know; there are just so many variables. In the UK burglars generally just want to remain undetected. A lot of times they’ll leave even if they find a house is occupied, or if they hear they’ve alerted someone. So an alarm that might attract further attention may well be a deterrent. But that’s generally the case with acquisitive crime anyway unless perpetors are especially desperate; confrontation is the last thing they want.
Of course if someone has entered with more nefarious purposes in mind then they may be more determined.
One thing to remember is often burglars are just as scared as the residents. A not uncommon unpleasantness in burglaries is for the burglar to defecate; but that’s usually down to nerves than any deliberate intention at soiling.
Although there are ‘proffesional’ burglars, most are just opportunistic. Most people are burgled by someone who lives within a few doors of them.
I’m saying there that I’m not psychic. I can’t know what a burglar has in mind. Even if I personally knew the person, I don’t think anyone I know would break into my house and steal my things. If someone I knew actually did that, it would make me question how well I knew them and I would have no idea what else they were capable of doing. Even if I personally knew them, I wouldn’t know that they were only going to take my stuff.
People who break into houses don’t wear badges that read “Only here for your stuff” or “Going to rape and kill you.” I don’t actually know that the person is only going to take my stuff. I don’t know what is in that person’s mind.
Apologies; I actually misread that sentence 3 times.
Still, I just don’t see how lethal force is the very first option a person jumps to. You’re describing not stopping your attack until the other person is dead because you think it’s a possibility they might attack you. I’m saying take precautions to defend yourself but only use lethal force if necessary.
Yikes. I remember a news story a few years back, someone got burglarized when they weren’t home. But the thief very helpfully left his driver’s license there so he was caught quite easily.
I love stupid criminal stories.
You should take up lawyering, you hear loads. Unfortunately usually when the prosecution is opening the case against your client.
PS: Hope you don’t think I was having a go at you before; I’d hate to think I’d upset you.
This is a matter of boundary-crossing – the door is a literal, physical boundary and also a psychological and social one. Someone who breaks in is violating my boundaries, very obvious ones that nobody on earth could claim to be confused about seeing. What else are they capable of doing? They’ve ignored this boundary – what other, more squishy boundaries are they willing to cross?
I can’t know. And I’m vulnerable. Someone who saw me and immediately took a header back out the way they came is going to get away okay. I’m not going to go chasing them in order to kill them. I’m not actually a violent person.
But if someone comes toward me, even one step, yes, I will retaliate to protect myself. What other boundaries is that person willing to cross? I have no idea and I have to presume the worst. I’m not going to get into my personal situation, so you’ll have to just trust me when I say that I am an easy target.
Actually, someone is more likely to survive a gunshot from me than anything else, because I load my shotguns with birdshot, which is unlikely to kill. Although I have considered alternating birdshot with slugs, with the birdshot being the warning and the slug being the lethal force if the person still decides to come at me with a faceful of shot. Meth is a major problem in my area, and someone high on meth might very well do that.
@Policy of Madness
I really wish that whole shotgun taser idea panned out,
on paper it was like the perfect mix of ranged stopping power and less lethal force it would have been perfect for your fist shell.
Alan,
No worries. We’re good.

So now the GOP wants to make abortion illegal if you have one after the 6-week mark. Six. WEEKS.
So, Alan, you say a doggie is an almost-guaranteed way to chase off burglars? Any size yapper, or just the biiiiig ones?
(Needs to get a pupper at some point, once the finances stabilize a bit more.)
Victorious,
That’s fucking absurd. The GOP needs to be STOPPED.
Victorious-That’s ridiculous! Few women even know they are pregnant at that early stage, let alone prepared for an abortion. Abortions are expensive, time off from work is needed, abortion centres are few and far between, and there are already loads of hurdles in the way. There is no way people are going to get an abortion before six weeks!
Uggh, I wish we could pass pregnancy on to the men in the GOP. But then again, that may still not work as they’ll just make themselves exempt from it. Like they tried to do with the healthcare repeal.
@MissEB47 That’s intentional. “If we can’t completely outlaw abortion, we can at least make it as close to impossible as we can!”
That and they’re probably trying to get abortion in front of the Supreme Court again, hoping for a different outcome.
Their next move will be imposing a mandatory 5 1/2 week waiting period for abortions.

Pepper spray/Mace/etc. intended for use on humans and tasers are limited to law enforcement in Canada. However bear spray is sold in Canada. Here in Saskatchewan we seem to hear a story every month or two of someone using bear spray to attack people.
I have to agree with the comments that gun fandom in the US is pretty much entirely aimed at white people. This includes the gun press and gun advertising. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an African-American in a gun ad, and AFAIK all the writers for the gun magazines are white. The closest thing you get to a POC in the gun press is Arab-American cop and gun writer Massad Ayoob.
So, hey. I lurk a lot, but generally speaking… when some obvious asshole troll decides to necro a thread, is it more appropriate to engage or ignore?
@ DMW I think I know which thread you’re talking about, and for this one in particular I’d say ignore. It doesn’t even look like it would make a decent snack for Katie. And there are other trolls before the latest one who also tried to necro it but it hasn’t worked for them either.
Mmk, thank you! c: I will go back to watching old horror movies at very inappropriate hours.
Incoming bad joke alert warning:
It’s been raining cats and dogs.
I just stepped in a poodle.
(brought to mind by the talk of dogs as burglar deterrent.)
@ redsilkphoenix
It seems to be as much about the ‘alarm’ qualities of the dog than the biteiness. You don’t technically even need the dog; just the sight of a kennel or dog paraphernalia is often enough.
I would still recommend getting a doggo though; pretty soon you won’t have enough money left to buy anything worth stealing anyway.
(Half your household budget will go on tennis balls)
BritterSweet-Yep, it sure is. They know that outlawing it would be unconstitutional, so they throw as much shit in the way as possible. It’s funny how denying women access to medical care is totes ok, while these people totally lose their minds at the mere mention of gun control.
I seriously can’t believe it either, except I can. Makes me more determined to vote in 2018, though. And I’m glad it’s getting cold enough that I can start wearing my pussyhat when I leave the house.
