John McCain announces that he’s now a “no” vote on the Graham-Cassidy anti-healthcare bill, and gets hailed as a “hero,” proving that the standards for “heroism” amongst Republican senators is pretty damn low. But if McCain is your senator, you should probably call to thank him for this minimal act of human decency.
Meanwhile, millions of Puerto Ricans remain in dire straights, without power and water — and, sadly, without much media coverage. And Mexico City continues to dig out from last week’s earthquake.
Here’s Johnny:

And now to Puerto Rico, a place the media seems to have largely forgotten:
Puerto Rico's population is larger that WY, VT, ND + AK combined. and it's entirely without power.

Leftists didn’t kill it; it was killed by the sheer incopetence of Milo ‘n’ pals, who failed to fill out the paperwork to reserve rooms or even contact some of the touted speakers to tell them they’d been invited. It’s almost as if they never intended the event to happen in the first place.

Ok, technically none of those were kitties.
I don’t see why universities should have to allow hate speech on campus. It creates a hostile environment for students, faculty and staff who are members of the group/s targeted by that hate speech.
Let’s not forget that Milo publicly outed a student as trans at one of the schools where he was invited to speak.
Apparently you believe the right to a platform to spew hate speech is more important than the right of students to be safe where they live and go to school. Good to know where you stand.
Oh, and both my k-8 and high schools had a policy against hate speech. Neither students or employees were allowed to engage in on campus. So I don’t believe that it would be illegal for universities to deny speakers a platform on campus due to hate speech.
Police brutality against peaceful protestors, Trump’s war on the free press and Trump’s demands that privately-owned organisations fire people who spoke out against him.
What are three things I’ve never heard a Free Speech Absolutist™ even pretend to care about?

That sounds like a RAM problem. I don’t actually know anything about RAM problems, but I’ve heard a similar situation described, and I’m pretty sure it was a RAM problem in the end…
Right after one of M$’s sneaky trick “up”grades to W10? Would be one hell of a coincidence.

Damn, I got off lucky at my college. The worst thing our College Republicans did was hold those Affirmative Action bake sales. (For those who aren’t familiar, AA bake sales are like regular bake sales, only you get a discount if you’re a visible minority. Because it’s SO UNFAIR for these minorities to get SPECIAL PRIVILEGES, boo hoo!) Pretty mild for an “edgy” stunt, IMO.
I was already in Windows 10! This was just one of those “just a quick update plz?” things they try to push on you every few days.
Hey, wanna do a Windows update real quick?
Like, now?
Or if you don’t wanna do it now, you could just hit snooze and we’ll do it tomorrow!
Bruh it’s been 24 hours, wanna update now?
Bruh it’s been another 24 hours. Update?
Hey! So, I have an update for your Windows here. Wanna do it now?
Time for your Windows update! You CAN still hit snooze but you REALLY should update now.
BRUH that’s another 24 hours right there. Update now, yeah?
YOU SHOULD UPD-
Update now? It will only take 10 minutes!
Don’t wanna update, huh? Well, the next time you have to reboot, we’re just gonna update anyway, okay?
It’s been 24 hours! Gonna reboot soon?
Come ON! It’s just a quick update!
Bruh you’ve gone 5 days without a reboot. Just do the damn update.
Hahaha, your computer just crashed! We’re gonna go ahead and do the update now.
It’s fine, it’ll only be 10 minutes and then you’re good to go.
Okay, it will actually take 8 hours.
Bruh we broke your computer. Sorry!
Try clicking reboot and update!
What do you mean we just updated?
Yeah but this is sort of still the same update.
Anyways, you need to buy a new computer now.
You say “nothing happens” after you enter your password, could you elaborate on that?
If it goes to a black screen, or just your background, and you have a cursor but nothing to click on, try hitting Ctrl+Shift+Esc to see if the Task manager comes up.
If its an emergency you can use the Task manager to launch things, do what you need and then work on getting it fixed. (Make sure you’re in the detailed view for the Task Manager, hit File > Run New Task, then you can browse to the things you want to open.)
Unfortunately there’s a million reasons Windows 10 will do that, most common would be hardware error (RAM, or maybe more likely Hard Drive), Virus infection, anti-virus fucking up, random malware or junk embedded into explorer.exe causing it to hang, or failed update (which could be caused by any number of the other reasons.)
If your computer has any kind of hardware diagnostics, I’d run that first to see if theres anything wrong with it, or at the very least if you can open the Task Manager, then file > run new task, and type in “eventvwr” (no quotes), then go into Windows Logs and then System and look for errors from “disk” (although, just because there isn’t any doesnt mean the hard drive doesn’t have problems.) Basically when Windows does that kind of thing, especially when an update or something takes waaaaay too long to install, first thing I like to eliminate is the hard drive, since its kind of important to know if its failing or not.
Star Trek: Discovery is debuting tonight, at least on Canadian TV. I was curious to see if there were any reviews yet at IMDB, and there actually are. There are four, including the following:
I wonder if the reviewer realises the original Trek would have been accused of being PC if the term had been in common use in 1966. Not only did they have a black woman and an Asian man as regular characters in important roles on the Enterprise, Roddenberry had the temerity to introduce a Russian character into the cast in the second season. Not to mention the content of some of the scripts.
@IP:
Well, there’s your mistake right there, if it wasn’t a new machine that you couldn’t get with anything better. 🙂
I will never update this machine from 7. Never. They can have my 7 when they pry it from my cold, dead fingers. And any new machine I get I have more than half a mind to blow the W10 off it and replace it with Ubuntu. If I can have my Steam and id Software games (mostly the Quakes and HLs) and emulators on it. 🙂
Meanwhile, I recommend you take your zonked W10 box in to a technician and see if they can do some sort of repair on it. There’s probably some way to fix it using a safe mood or command prompt or rescue disk boot and then some serious wizardry. (Though not using Previous Versions/System Restore. M$ took that away from W10 users so it could rent it back to them for a monthly fee in the form of OneDrive and their online backup service, which the adware that is W10’s Explorer will constantly remind them of.)
If not … I hope you had a good backup.
In either case … I don’t recommend trusting Microsoft again. Ever.
I’m sorry this happened to you.
@IP
Try starting your comp in safe mode and see if that works:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode
If you can get it booted in safe mode, you can try to remove the most recent update and that might resolve the problem for the moment. Then you can check the update and see what it did, and decide if you need it after all. You can refuse updates completely if you like. You’re never required to do it. The next time Windoze tries to push the update on you, reject it.
@Taffer
I’ve given up for the night, but the last few times I’ve tried to start up it’s actually gotten to the desktop only to freeze entirely. I can’t move the mouse cursor at that stage, and the keyboard does nothing. I will probably continue trying tomorrow morning, presumably.
Hey, @David? I thought no other users could edit one’s comments here, you perhaps aside — but I doubt you would have edited my previous one to change “mode” to “mood”. A childish prank like that seems out of character for anyone here but one of the many itinerant trolls that this place seems to attract.
@PoM
Couldn’t get to safe mode, but after many attempts I got to the repair screen or whatever. I tried the process of returning to before the update, but it was just stuck on that screen for a while and then it said the process failed.
Tim,
Thanks for the reminder! I just checked and it premieres tonight in the US too. It’s supposed to be on at 7:30 but I think football is on and those fucking annoying games always run over. So who knows when it’ll actually be on.
I hate (American) football so much!
Anyway, I wonder if the reviewer actually saw the show or if he’s just complaining because he knows the lead is a black woman.
@IP
Do you know what the number of the update was? I wonder if it was the Creators update, since you said you delayed it a while and then it took 10 hours. Creators has alllllllll the issues and the supposed benefits are kind of minimal.
It sounds like this might be your problem?
http://www.drivethelife.com/windows-10/windows-10-black-screen-after-creators-update.html
@IP
I tried to post a link to a problem that seems related to yours and the comment got eaten for some reason, so here is the link again with it broken:
h t t p://www.drivethelife.com/windows-10/windows-10-black-screen-after-creators-update.html
Since you said you delayed installation for a while and then it took 10 hours, I suspect the update is the Creators one, which has tons of problems and almost no upside.
@IP
I tried to post a link twice and it got eaten, so I’ve emailed David to ask if he can release it. It sounds like maybe you’re a victim of the Creators update.
