So it’s been a busy week, and I haven’t done one of these for a few days. Let’s play catch-up. I’m going a bit heavy on the joke tweets and cute animals today because otherwise I think I’d have to curl up in a ball on the floor.

There's a real possibility this does all end with Trump shooting somebody on Fifth Avenue.

Maybe it would be more believable if GOP didn't speak out against racism the same day the got caught racially gerrymandering in Texas?

mildlymagnificent: thanks! The reason they’re not calling it a hate crime is because there were no swastikas or anything on the scene. I guess it needs to be in your face obvious to even consider
Hugs, HorrorFan. I’m sorry.
@HorrorFan
You may have to take it directly to the state Bureau of Investigation to get a real effort made.
Fun recent tweet (not me):
LibrarianShipwreck @libshipwreck Aug 17
Last year I did a ton of archival research only to have a conference reject my paper for: “failure to cite a statue.” Harsh but fair!
@Horrorfan510
I just read your original post. Internet hugs.
When 7/7 happened (i.e. 7th July 2005, terrorists took bombs onto London Underground and a bus during the morning rush hour), I was living in London and it took me a while to process how I felt.
Take care of yourself, and feel free to ask for help here, if we can help.
@Horrorfan
Hugs, and stay safe !
The alt-right has recently been pursuing a strategy of staging rallies through extremely liberal neighborhoods in order to provoke confrontations.
Well, two can play this game. I think some of the reddest areas of the country could do with a little fly-in protesting, too.
For instance, Arizona (maybe it’d be a good idea to picket the Arpaio-style “tough sheriffs”. Or else the way women and children are treated by Mormon fundamentalist sects in the Colorado City area).
Idaho would another option. The state GOP has been allowing a sect of Pentecostal fanatics in the state to deny life-saving medical care to their own children in the name of “religious liberty”. It’s about time that issue got national attention. Anyone who is upset by “sharia” but not by that is a flaming hypocrite.
My concern that Bannon may have jumped ship so that he can hold onto as large a following as possible and carry them over to future political candidates.
As it stands now, when Trump fails, he can say ‘I thought he was our man, we all thought he was our man, he couldn’t do the job’. And now instead of going down with the ship and getting the stink of failure on him, maybe he can rally the so-called deplorables and sell himself as their leader to the next conservative candidate who wants to capture that demographic.
Or maybe he even runs for president himself…erp.
@Horrorfan510, I’m so sorry :C solidarity with you and yours, friend. Stay safe!
I don’t know how many times I can thank all of you, but thanks! I might suggest to the people at the temple about contacting the FBI about investigating. I found an article that describes it in more detail. http://www.sfgate.com/crime/article/Alameda-synagogue-vandalized-by-rock-thrower-11942554.php
ETA: I just realized I have away my location with the article. I’m going to keep it up anyways
@Horrorfan510
I’m truly sorry. I hope you are safe, and they find who did it.
@oogly
Congratulations on your newfound self. May this bring you all the happiness you deserve.
Re: The other political happenings
After all the stream of horrible things that has been America for far too long, I dare say this makes me giddy. I don’t want to get my hopes up that we might see the light at the end of the tunnel. I’ll accept this satisfying day though.
Horrorfan:
Oy, I’m just doing pre-shabbat internet when I read your note. From your location description, I briefly thought it was MY shul, and contacted our non-Jewish security. Not us. Unfortunately you.
שמור על עצמך
(Guard your safety)
I’m late as usual, @Horrorfan, but my condolences as well for the dreadful incident that’s happened. If I could offer you a snack over the internet, I would. (Pretty sure there’s something in my room that’s kosher.)
Best thing ever.
Also; Stephen Colbert’s take on it the other night was HILARIOUS!
The Confederates don’t deserve tasteful, dignified monuments of marble and bronze, they deserve horribly-sculpted, garish fiberglass monstrosities!
Awesome news about that Canadian Wingnut thingy going belly-up. I must see that video of that bigoted “reporter” yammerin’ about “evil violent Lefties” only for a “violent Rightie” atrocity right by her disprove her point. There’s got to be a video!
Dreidl:
Shabbat shalom! Thanks for the thoughts!
Troubelle:
Thanks! I don’t actually keep kosher though, but if you happen to have some Passover popovers…
Everyone else: thank you! My family and I have been safe so far.
All these developments I’m hearing about is pure awesome. The Far-Right/Neo-Fascist/Neo-Nazi menace is finally “goin’ down”!
Jabba’s….well….everything falling apart; Far-Right media falling apart; Bannon fired; the Far-Right fractured; Trump “allies” bailing; everything!
This is certainly a great day to be alive and Progressives need to keep up the good fight!!
@Horrorfan510
Hope you stay safe and they catch the perps.
*EPIC HUGS*
@Spuki
Read the comments policy. Yet again… -_-
Let me guess; It’s the “nut” in Wingnut.
Avoiding the wrong words takes a lot to get used to. I understand the reasons, here. I’m trying. Some things take a while to catch and stop. It’s so tricky. I’m avoiding the obvious stuff like “crazy”, “nuts”, “sane”, “stupid”, etc. but sometimes something slips through.
Again; I’m sorry.
I would appreciate more responses to my comments that weren’t solely “You violated the Comments Policy”. No offense, but it’s frustrating. I’m trying to do right and I’m new here.
I’m sorry for the tone of the last part of the last comment.
I’m reading and studying the Comments Policy.
I’ll try my best to not come off as a jerk.
@Spuki
Well, it ain’t the “wing” 😛
Look, I’ll spare us both the whole confrontation . Just, if you think this is frustrating for you… Ya know?
I read a nice thing today that restored my faith in humanity a little bit.
Gymnast Ragan Smith and her coach Kim Zmeskal learned 24 hours ago that the music in Smith’s new floor routine had a small snippet that was taken from a movie but has roots in confederate culture. I don’t know what the movie or the music was. Neither of them was aware of this until it was pointed out. So they immediately reworked the music to take that bit out. This was right on the eve of night one of the US championships, which was just tonight. So it’s kind of big deal to change the music. But they did without pause.
These are white Texans, so it could’ve gone very differently.
It’s always nice when people who are famous – well famous if you’re a gym nerd like me anyway – turn out to be decent people instead of assholes.
Also, Ragan killed it on her floor routine and ended up getting one of the highest scores in the world on that event so far this year.
A small thing, but it made me happy
It’s okay. I read the Comments Policy and thank you for helping me out. I’ll try to be more careful. Thank you. It’s great to be here.
So, I’m a Tennessean and when I do rarely ‘go home’ I actually have to drive past that Nathan Bedford Forrest monstrosity – there’s no other way that doesn’t take hours extra and challenge my very poor sense of direction. It is enormous, it is impossible to miss. It offends on political, moral and aesthetic grounds. Its only positive purpose, that I can see, is to remind people that no matter how much progress is made, there are still haters who hate so much that they will devote time and effort and money into demonstrating their hate. But even that has limited value, so please don’t say we deserve it, I hope we don’t. And I hope the next time I have cause to go down that road there’s a lovely row of Lombardy poplars or leylandii or pine that partially (eventually to completely) obscure the view.
@WWTH
NoScript does the job if you don’t let WHTM run scripts, but at the cost of being able to edit comments. Of course if you have to edit a comment you can turn scripts on for the site from the menu easily, edit, and then turn scripts off again.
@mildlymagnificent, Scildfreja:
Just out of curiosity, did the Rebel subscriber graph look like an exponential decay curve or something different?
Nuh. At the time it was just a smooth downwards glide path.
I checked just now and it’s gone back to hiccups up and steps down. But it’s still going down, no, up a bit, no, down a bit … having a bit of trouble getting below the 862000 mark.
