Confederacy and Chill: Friday Morning Tweet Catch-up

This is the “beauty” Trump wants to save

By David Futrelle

So it’s been a busy week, and I haven’t done one of these for a few days. Let’s play catch-up. I’m going a bit heavy on the joke tweets and cute animals today because otherwise I think I’d have to curl up in a ball on the floor.

mildlymagnificent: thanks! The reason they’re not calling it a hate crime is because there were no swastikas or anything on the scene. I guess it needs to be in your face obvious to even consider

You may have to take it directly to the state Bureau of Investigation to get a real effort made.

Fun recent tweet (not me):

Last year I did a ton of archival research only to have a conference reject my paper for: “failure to cite a statue.” Harsh but fair!

I just read your original post. Internet hugs.

When 7/7 happened (i.e. 7th July 2005, terrorists took bombs onto London Underground and a bus during the morning rush hour), I was living in London and it took me a while to process how I felt.

Take care of yourself, and feel free to ask for help here, if we can help.

The alt-right has recently been pursuing a strategy of staging rallies through extremely liberal neighborhoods in order to provoke confrontations.

Well, two can play this game. I think some of the reddest areas of the country could do with a little fly-in protesting, too.

For instance, Arizona (maybe it’d be a good idea to picket the Arpaio-style “tough sheriffs”. Or else the way women and children are treated by Mormon fundamentalist sects in the Colorado City area).

Idaho would another option. The state GOP has been allowing a sect of Pentecostal fanatics in the state to deny life-saving medical care to their own children in the name of “religious liberty”. It’s about time that issue got national attention. Anyone who is upset by “sharia” but not by that is a flaming hypocrite.

My concern that Bannon may have jumped ship so that he can hold onto as large a following as possible and carry them over to future political candidates.

As it stands now, when Trump fails, he can say ‘I thought he was our man, we all thought he was our man, he couldn’t do the job’. And now instead of going down with the ship and getting the stink of failure on him, maybe he can rally the so-called deplorables and sell himself as their leader to the next conservative candidate who wants to capture that demographic.

Or maybe he even runs for president himself…erp.

I don’t know how many times I can thank all of you, but thanks! I might suggest to the people at the temple about contacting the FBI about investigating. I found an article that describes it in more detail. http://www.sfgate.com/crime/article/Alameda-synagogue-vandalized-by-rock-thrower-11942554.php

ETA: I just realized I have away my location with the article. I’m going to keep it up anyways

Congratulations on your newfound self. May this bring you all the happiness you deserve.

Re: The other political happenings

After all the stream of horrible things that has been America for far too long, I dare say this makes me giddy. I don’t want to get my hopes up that we might see the light at the end of the tunnel. I’ll accept this satisfying day though.

This two-year-old Gawker article got boosted into my sight recently, and I actually agree with Sam Biddle’s conclusion:

Tear down every statue of every other general, father, son, and daughter of the Confederacy, but leave up the insane goofy hell-rictus of Nathan Bedford Forrest, the most fitting monument to the ugly idiocy of southern history.

Best thing ever.

Also; Stephen Colbert’s take on it the other night was HILARIOUS!

The Confederates don’t deserve tasteful, dignified monuments of marble and bronze, they deserve horribly-sculpted, garish fiberglass monstrosities!

Bannon’s out! I’ll bet dollars to donuts that his angle will be “Trump’s a Secret Democrat Globalist, Just Look at His Son In Law.” He’ll try to pin all the blame on the Democrats, ’cause they’re the real racists, don’tchakno.

I wanna blather about Canadian news a bit as well though, ’cause it’s sort of related! Ohmigod you guyse Rebel Media is disintegrating. Almost all of their staff is running away, their money is drying up, they’ve lost most of their advertisers, and they’ve got nowhere to turn to!

(For those not in the know, Rebel Media is Canada’s own Alt-Right media, shamefully from my own province. For the past few years they’ve been swimming in right wing money, building up the Alt-Right, spreading islamophobia and fascist tension, and being general right wing jerks.)

They sent a “reporter” to Cville and that reporter caught the car assault on video – in the middle of her ranting about how terrible the “alt left” is! Now they’re in national news as a source of the fascism, and everyone’s scrambling to get off the ship while it sinks. It’s hilarious watching them squirm. Their fetid leader, Ezra Levant, is in the fun position of repudiating the “Alt Right” and claiming that they never supported that sort of hate, while they’ve been a major media outlet for exactly that for the past three years. Our own Federal and Provincial Conservatives are scrambling away from them, even with the fact that some of our local Conservative MLAs have been reporters for Rebel, and our federal CPC leader’s got a Rebel Media Director as a campaign manager.

To make it even better, a disgruntled former employee of Rebel was fired and recently released audio tapes of a recording, in which Levant bribes him with “hush money” to not talk about how Rebel operates. And then proceeds to tell everyone how they operate, and how their whole mission is to squeeze as much donation money as they can out of gullible angry white people, then get their email addresses from petitions so they can sell them on to advertisers.

Even more betterer, they not long ago announced a “Rebel Cruise” – a cruise ship with Norwegian Cruises or something. Rebel Media personalities would give talks and stuff as they toured wherever they were gonna go. Charging thousands of dollars more than a normal cruise, too. And now that the cruise is almost ready? The cruise company has cancelled their reservations and told them that they’re not welcome. Who wants to bet whether those people will get refunds?

It’s so heckin’ delightful, guys. I am giggling with glee. I mean, it’s still a horrible mess we’re all in, but they are disintegrating like a flan in the cupboard. They’re now asking for donations to build a whole new right-wing YouTube/Twitter for themselves where they won’t get persecuted by those darn evil commie pinko leftists, i.e. civil society.

A toast to Rebel Media! May you rot in your ineptitude and evil.

You’ll have your day, too, American friends. You’ll see Breitbart crumble, you’ll see their grand schemes collapse with the most wonderfully pathetic whumph sound. You’ll see them wriggle in shame and skulk back into the shadows.

And don’t think that this isn’t your day too! Shamefully for Canada, Rebel Media’s had a lot of responsibility in broadcasting the hateful messages that have created the Alt Right. They’re as influential as Stormfront. Moreso, if you ask me – Stormfront has always been related to the Nazis, but Rebel’s never put it on their banner. And I guarantee that the name “Rebel” was chosen specifically to appeal to a certain segment of southerners.

The fascists have lost a major recruiting tool, one of their biggest. Rebel’s collapse is a victory, my ducks! Enjoy it! They’ll be back in another form I’m sure, but their loss will take a huge amount of wind out the alt-right’s sails.

It’s a good day!

Awesome news about that Canadian Wingnut thingy going belly-up. I must see that video of that bigoted “reporter” yammerin’ about “evil violent Lefties” only for a “violent Rightie” atrocity right by her disprove her point. There’s got to be a video!

Bannon is good news.
I have been overwhelmed with joy at the wide assortment of people from all walks of life who have come out against Trump. (PZ Myers posted an anti-Fascist statement from Johnny Cash’s children that actually made me cry with happiness.) And all the CEO’s from the biggest American companies resigning from his business committee – whooot!
First, it is showing Trump that sliding the US officially into white nationalism, fascism & Nazism isn’t the cakewalk he thought it would be. Yeah, USA!!
But, I was afraid that if Trump got pushed out, his rabid followers would call it a coup and rise up to defend him. They would never accept that it was because he had violated his obligations to America and the Constitution. I feared civil war (and these people have been panting for a race war for decades.)
But if people like Bannon keep getting pushed and turning against him, they will splinter his followers, who are not the most organized gang to begin with.
I do expect we will see random acts of terror (which will be ugly) but no organized opposition. Takes a load off my mind.
JS

All these developments I’m hearing about is pure awesome. The Far-Right/Neo-Fascist/Neo-Nazi menace is finally “goin’ down”!

Jabba’s….well….everything falling apart; Far-Right media falling apart; Bannon fired; the Far-Right fractured; Trump “allies” bailing; everything!

This is certainly a great day to be alive and Progressives need to keep up the good fight!!

Let me guess; It’s the “nut” in Wingnut.

Avoiding the wrong words takes a lot to get used to. I understand the reasons, here. I’m trying. Some things take a while to catch and stop. It’s so tricky. I’m avoiding the obvious stuff like “crazy”, “nuts”, “sane”, “stupid”, etc. but sometimes something slips through.

Again; I’m sorry.

I would appreciate more responses to my comments that weren’t solely “You violated the Comments Policy”. No offense, but it’s frustrating. I’m trying to do right and I’m new here.

I read a nice thing today that restored my faith in humanity a little bit.

Gymnast Ragan Smith and her coach Kim Zmeskal learned 24 hours ago that the music in Smith’s new floor routine had a small snippet that was taken from a movie but has roots in confederate culture. I don’t know what the movie or the music was. Neither of them was aware of this until it was pointed out. So they immediately reworked the music to take that bit out. This was right on the eve of night one of the US championships, which was just tonight. So it’s kind of big deal to change the music. But they did without pause.

These are white Texans, so it could’ve gone very differently.

It’s always nice when people who are famous – well famous if you’re a gym nerd like me anyway – turn out to be decent people instead of assholes.

Also, Ragan killed it on her floor routine and ended up getting one of the highest scores in the world on that event so far this year.

A small thing, but it made me happy

So, I’m a Tennessean and when I do rarely ‘go home’ I actually have to drive past that Nathan Bedford Forrest monstrosity – there’s no other way that doesn’t take hours extra and challenge my very poor sense of direction. It is enormous, it is impossible to miss. It offends on political, moral and aesthetic grounds. Its only positive purpose, that I can see, is to remind people that no matter how much progress is made, there are still haters who hate so much that they will devote time and effort and money into demonstrating their hate. But even that has limited value, so please don’t say we deserve it, I hope we don’t. And I hope the next time I have cause to go down that road there’s a lovely row of Lombardy poplars or leylandii or pine that partially (eventually to completely) obscure the view.

@WWTH

Does anyone else have the page jump around whenever there’s a post featuring a lot embedded tweets? It’s driving me up the wall. Especially now that practically every post is about twitter.

Any way to fix it? I’m viewing the site on Chrome.

NoScript does the job if you don’t let WHTM run scripts, but at the cost of being able to edit comments. Of course if you have to edit a comment you can turn scripts on for the site from the menu easily, edit, and then turn scripts off again.

Nuh. At the time it was just a smooth downwards glide path.

I checked just now and it’s gone back to hiccups up and steps down. But it’s still going down, no, up a bit, no, down a bit … having a bit of trouble getting below the 862000 mark.
