What a miserable weekend. All we can do is keep resisting. There are more of us than there are of them, and we have basic human decency on our side. A lot of people came out today across the country to show solidarity with the victims in Charlottesville, and there are more rallies planned.
On to the tweets:
I need white people to stop feigning surprise with their "this is not america" nonsense.

But that is in part of the motivation with these guys; more precisely, they’re angry that women can and do say no to them. See this thread:
When I say that this is a movement of men who are desperately mad that no one will fuck them, I am actually not just making fun of them.

Otrame, Mike sounds like a wonderful companion. My condolences to Sandra and Axe all of us who have lost a friend or who are seeing that loss looming on the horizon (mine is 13 now …).
Seems it’s taken seeing yer actual Nazis on the street, tooled up and flag-waving and murdering someone, for some people to change their tune a little about the trump maladministration in general and the “alt-right” in particular. I do wonder who wrote that speech for him (and made it so starkly different to his normal speech-patterns and vocabulary). Any news of Bannon, is he busy reassuring the righty-whities that this is window-dressing and it’s really business as usual?
Nice to hear that about your captain, Valentine.
It’s horrifying to see people contorting themselves to blame antifa or Black Lives Matter or the radical left or say that protesters were hitting the guy’s car and he was fleeing them or “I don’t support the KKK but they weren’t hurting anyone until the left showed up.”
Why isn’t it ok to just unambiguously condemn the KKK? If David Duke is for it, be against it. How is not that fucking simple?
@BS and his four fluffy kitties:
Because then they’d have to admit that evil can come from people like themselves. This is a difficult realisation for people to come to. People who know more about psychology than I do can speak about othering and fundamental attribution error, but on a human level it’s a pretty difficult thing to have to admit to oneself, especially for the privileged.
OT, in kitty advice – has anyone got any tips for moving house while keeping a cat as stress-free as possible? I am moving house at the moment and my cat is a bit distressed.
First he was excited about all the new cardboard boxes, and now things he is used to are going in the cardboard boxes, which is no fun and also a bit worrying. He is quite a nervous boy anyway as his previous owner mistreated him and also moved him a few times, and I think he has worked out something is happening and he doesn’t like it. He wee’d on a box last night and then spontaneously attacked my leg and scratched me really quite hard 🙁
If there is anything I can do to make it a bit less stressful for him, please let me know!
Violet: Getting it over quickly?
That or very, very slowly.
I tried both approaches this year; it took them a month to get over the move. Which sucks because we’re about to move again.
Well, I lost the entire weekend and part of yesterday reading that necro’d thread. I think it’s beyond necro’d and become full-on zombified. I completely missed the thing in NC, even!
Adding to/taking from the kitty condolences. Poor Catbeast is back to not eating after having injured himself (he’s recovered now and was chowing down until yesterday) and now cries all the time and won’t rest much, either. He seems to be obsessed with getting on the counters in the bathrooms* which he isn’t allowed to do anymore. Poor thing just wanders from the hall (in front of the hall bath) to the master bedroom and cries. Not sure what to do about it; he’s too wobbly to be allowed to try jumping up there anymore.
Kidbeast is leaving to go back home tomorrow. It was a much nicer visit this time; a year of maturity (they’re 14 now), the memory of their cousin’s visit earlier this year *shudder* and the fact that it was only three weeks instead of eight really changed my outlook on the matter!
*As far as the vet and I could figure, he must have fallen badly in the master bathroom; unless someone is in that room or the master bedroom, things that go on there can’t be heard in the rest of the house and vice versa.
SFHC, please don’t go away again. I adore you.
Axe, condolences on you grandma. Much <3 to your puppers.
Everone else that I didn't name: hugs, support, and warm thoughts sent you.
@Violet, I don’t know if there’s much more you can do than give him lots of love and attention. If you’ve boxed up stuff, nothing smells like his family anymore, so he’s living in a place that isn’t really his. So he marks territory with clawing and peeing. Poor little fella :C If he’s got a blanket or pillows that are his, letting those stay out might help him out a bit. I’m no animal expert though, that’s just a guess.
What he said. Even more, they’d have to admit that evil can come from themselves, personally. They’ve voiced support for the KKK, for the Alt-Right, for the Republicans. That’s their tribe. They’re in that team. That’s something to keep in mind, there. They can’t condemn the Nazis because they’re on that team.
They’ll be able to condemn the fascists when the social and emotional costs of betraying that team are lower than the costs of staying. At that point, they’ll be especially full of condemnation, to signal to their new team that they’ve made the switch. As someone linked in another thread, they’ll sing the I-Was-Not-A-Nazi Polka.
It’s our job to push the social and emotional costs of staying on Team Nazi as high as we can. I think that was WWTH who was saying that elsewhere, too. Being nice hasn’t worked. We’ll have to use shame.

And when otherwise stable people say that it’s ok for nazis to bring assault weapons to a rally which is being held for the purpose of ginning up support for exterminating other people… “because fear”… it’s gonna take a LOT of shame to get to them.
Reading comments on my usual haunts is really disturbing. I am amazed and utterly, utterly appalled that so many people are unashamedly supportive of nazi’s!
We did win WWII right? ‘Cause it sure as fuck doesn’t seem like it.
And now it’s time for me to try to pretend the rest of this hellish world doesn’t exist for a while.
So…does anyone here play PoE?
Regarding shame – Jack Posobiec got a flurry of attention when he was retweeted by Dolt 45.
Then he went on Twitter himself to frantically deny that he was alt-right. It was pathetic and somewhat entertaining.
He’s still a blob of glup, but he’s afraid to be known by normies as one.

Thought it was cool, then had a sad, then back to cool. We’re pet elves, people! 😀
Peeking in to share an improvised dinner made from kitchen scraps, which turned out surprisingly good. Can recommend!
This has a fake meat base (soy protein, in my case), sautéed im butter with onions, garlic and green peas. I put a good amount of allspice on the “meat” right after I put it in the pan, and then added some sesame oil when the pan got dry. When the protein had cooked through, I added a can of drained black beans, and pearl/giant couscous (boiled with veggie stock). After a quick stir, I added Japanese soy sauce and rice vinegar, along with berbere spice and salt. The last addition was a cup of boiling instant mushroom (chanterelle) soup.
Two things! First: berbere is an Ethiopian spice mix which can contain pretty much whatever, but will definitely have at least cayenne/chili powder, nutmeg, ginger, coriander, paprika, cloves and cardamom. Mine also hade lemon.
Second: not sure what kind of relationship people have to allspice. Because of the weird English name, I think many native English speakers think it’s some kind of generic spice mix? Really, it’s a kind of pepper with a very special taste. It’s common in traditional Swedish cooking, but even more instrumental in Jamaican food. Many traditional Jamaican dishes use allspice, most notably Jamaican jerk chicken. The pepper goes by many different names, for example myrtle pepper or pimenta. When a Jamaican recipe calls for “pimento seeds” it means whole allspice peppercorn.
Hitler was an asshat.
There is only one good reason to replay 2016: to try to avoid having another disaster in 2020.
Here’s the thing. I don’t think anyone has really come to terms with what a disaster Trump’s election was. Luckily he’s so scatter-brained and buffoonish that most of the things he wants to do won’t happen. But the single most lasting consequence of his election with be total control of the federal court system for the next 30 years by packing it with young radical right-wing activist judges. I would not be shocked to see Social Security and/or Medicare crippled by a Supreme Court ruling in the next 10 years. There is also the danger that — between White House policy and Supreme Court rulings — they will be able to bring about a level of voter suppression that will be a bulwark against the tsunami of millennials that threatens to wash them away. I won’t be around to see all that, but it still scares me.
People need to understand that the deck is stacked against Democrats in 2018, and not be too discouraged when the bums aren’t thrown out. My big concern is that the Democratic Party will split between the mainstream and the progressive wings, and the sides will not reunite for the general election — and the Republicans will win the White House and Congress and be able to make their dominance permanent.
The instant unpopularity of the name “Hillary” I will quite confidently attribute to the misogynistic attacks on the first “First Lady” who didn’t obsequiously play the “good helpmate” role. I still think the biggest factor in her failure to win the White House was that all the negative coverage she got — nothingburger scandals and all — gave people who really didn’t want to have a woman president an excuse for not voting for her.
Bernie was a good thing as long as he was acting as a spokesperson for progressive wing of the party. Then he began to think he might win the nomination, and he turned into a megaphone for the Republican program of damaging Hillary. They were telling the moderates that she was a wild-eyed lefty crypto-communist and telling the lefties that she was a corporate shill and basically a Republican (and this is where Bernie was a big help). I supported Hillary because I thought that Bernie couldn’t win — I know, the polls, but nobody had really tried to attack him yet, and there was a shitload of oppo research available — and that she was far tougher and better qualified to deal with the Republican vandals who would almost surely retain control of Congress. There was no way any of Bernie’s program was going to pass this year’s Congress, so the only real issue in the election was whether the Republicans would be allowed to savage the non-rich in this country.
I thought i’d share this:
https://twitter.com/FanSince09/status/897294476850249728
I’m willing to be even more hesitant with my opinions on Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders if it’ll encourage SFHC to stick around. She contributes more to this site than yet another post-mortem of the 2016 election would.
It makes me very sad that so many Bernie supporters are determined to accept the absolute worst of right wing talking points in order to discredit Hillary, and that so many Hillary supporters are determined to accept the absolute worst of right wing talking points in order to discredit Bernie. I don’t get it. When did leftists become just as gullible as Republicans? Why is this a thing?
That is honestly what Trump sounds like right now, if you can stand to watch CNN anymore (he’s live right now, whining about how “unfair” the coverage of Bannon is – I had to mute him)
The fact that he can be shamed into doing what amounted to ass-covering is a good sign, but it still sent the proper dog whistles to the Nazis that he’s still “on their side.”
Society needs to keep up the pressure. Seeing these guys take heat within their personal lives is a good sign. Need more of that.
There’s a 7-congressperson letter asking President Trump(1488) to fire Steve Bannon, Stephen Miller and Sebastian Gorka. It’s only Democrats signed on to it, but at least some people are trying.
There is a 30+ sponsor House Resolution requesting the firing of such white nationalist aides as SB, SM, and SG.
Alex Jones has his usual idiot take on things. “Those ‘Nazis’ were actually Jewish actors.” No, they weren’t.
I thought v Gorka had already been canned; how’s he still there?!

@Axe yay for pet elves!
@everyone else, I don’t really get the whole Bernie thing (I’m British and TBH I don’t understand how the American political system works ie what is primaries? What is a byGOP? Why is the person who got the most votes not the winner?) but I notice some of you mentioning how he trashed Hillary and I just wanted to say I disapprove of people trashing their rivals. To me this is a worrying trend in politics which is directly connected to the amount of aggressiveness we have in the world today. I want to hear about what makes you the best candidate, not why your opponent’s the worst.
Also we are having a similar “he would fix everything and water would become wine” thing going on at the moment in the UK with Corbyn, and actually he is not Jesus he is just a guy – his presidency wouldn’t have been perfect. Not possible.
