What a miserable weekend. All we can do is keep resisting. There are more of us than there are of them, and we have basic human decency on our side. A lot of people came out today across the country to show solidarity with the victims in Charlottesville, and there are more rallies planned.
On to the tweets:
I need white people to stop feigning surprise with their "this is not america" nonsense.
Yes it is, boo. Where you been living?

But that is in part of the motivation with these guys; more precisely, they’re angry that women can and do say no to them. See this thread:

reimalebario : darkly, they want more nazis. They prefer their opponent to be nazis too.
Urgh, I am also dismayed that it took this long (and the murder of a white woman) before GoDaddy stopped hosting that hate site.
There’s a huge problem with a lot of tech companies defending Nazis as ‘Free Speech’, even though they aren’t the government, and therefore have no obligation to let anyone spew hate speech on their platform…
I’m not going to thank anyone for saying “Nazis are bad”.
That’s like the guys who say “But I’m a nice guy, I don’t hit women.” No – that doesn’t make you nice, it makes you a human being.
@Bacon People seem to be getting very mixed up about the meaning of “free speech”. Free speech means anyone can hold/express any opinion they want without persecution for it. So far, so fair enough; without that basic right, you are living in, well, a repressive police state.
“Free speech” does NOT mean you are automatically entitled to a platform and a polite audience (which seems to be the current interpretation). You have a right to say what you want; the people you say it to have the right to exercise THEIR free speech and tell you they think you’re full of shit and they don’t want to listen to you and here, have a rotten tomato in the face.
I really think we need to get away from the “you must listen to me politely because FREEZE PEACH!” mentality and start encouraging people to exercise their free speech right to say “Nazis, fuck off.”
Surplus:
It barely even counts as a dog whistle. “Cherish our history” is straight up saying “this wouldn’t happen if you would just leave Confederate statues alone”. It’s a despicable statement, under the circumstances.
Disclaimer : don’t get yer hopes up too soon, this might be fake, so grab a bag o’ salt or two or twelve.
So there’s an article on the Daily Stormer claiming Anonymous are now in control of the site and will allow it to exist for another 24 hours before shutting it down permanently.
I’m not quite sure what to make of it, it might be entirely made up. Read it for yourselves, for once it’s an article on the DS that doesn’t need to come with all the content warnings ever – even the comments are shut down, so no worries even on that side.
This comes along with the ultimatum from that hosting service (not too fucking soon, assholes), and it weirdly mentions “standing behind the Jewish people”, which seems a bit weird to me because for once the Nazis have been toning down the anti-semitism (mostly to make more room for black hate, but still) – the fact that Your Anon News and other prominent accounts associated with Anonymous have denied any involvement makes the whole thing sound like Anglin’s just trying to make up a new Jewish Conspiracy (TM) against his rag.
To a lot of tech companies, I think “free speech” actually means “it’d be really expensive to police what people do with our platform.”
Let’s see what the new German legislation does. That might give them a few headaches.
@Sinkable John:
The Guardian has quoted an anonymous Anonymous source as suggesting that this is a stunt by the Daily Stormer themselves to distract attention.
EJ : expensive, and employee-consuming. As in, people who actually police comments and videos burn out at an absolutely horrible rate.
Then again, if everyone were actually moderating it, maybe the worst dredge of manking would stop using the internet as their personal sewer.
(the one I talked to was the moderation team for Dailymotion. If you though people would not upload pedophile video in a public video sharing service, think again)
@EJ
Yeah, that “24 hours” thing reads to me a lot like they’re tryna make that situation with the host look like they’ve been hacked instead.
Not to mention the part about “we tracked down Anglin and our allies are on their way to his location”. Part of me wishes there is indeed a bunch of hackers reenacting and modernizing the post-Nuremberg nazi hunts of old, but right now that looks a lot more like Anglin’s own fantasies.
I’m really disappointed that the asshole who planned the rally didn’t have a bag of shit thrown at him during that press conference I’ll take him running away like the coward he is though. Also follow Yes you’re a racist on twitter if you haven’t already. That account is starting to identify everyone who was at that rally and one dude already lost his job.
@Ohlmann
Yeah, it gets bad. I once moderated content that needed to be safe for all ages and the only thing that makes you want to open up that flagged content is knowing you’re protecting kids. I’ll never view the world the same way again. And you think you know how bad it gets from coming here, but believe me, it’s worse. I voluntarily come here, but there’s no way I would voluntarily subject myself to completely unfiltered Internet content without good reason (like moderating again), nor is there anything to mock in that really bad part of humanity that most people thankfully never get exposed to. The shit from the past couple of days is really fucking evil and awful, but there’s an even worse evil out there. Though there’s likely some overlap in the creators of the shit we’re seeing around Charlottesville and the content I’m referring to.
Sinkable John:
That bit looks like an attempt to convince the SPLC and others that he really is in Nigeria.
Anonymous have hacked it !

@kupo
Agreed. There is awful shit that moderators have to deal with. Given the seriousness I’d moderate such a site if I got to publish the stuff that was legal to publish elsewhere. For social shaming purposes. Being paid to do it would be even nicer but society is not there yet.
I’ve stepped up the shaming on Facebook. My parents have nothing to say about white supremacist marching and protestors being hit with cars. My father decided now was the time to shame Starbucks because of immigrants and TB.
https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=2114079568617949&id=100000477795648
I think this is what I need to do on my blog. Write about what my family is posting. It feels right, like that’s a strategic benefit I’ve been looking for.
Or have they? I think you might be right that Anglin’s behind this as the forums are still up.
@kupo
I remember reading some stuff about this a few years ago… big companies like facebook outsource their moderation, and the companies that do the actual grunt work have high staff turnover and instances of PTSD.
This was probably the article:
https://www.wired.com/2014/10/content-moderation/
Roll on automated filtering systems that don’t suck, and more effective means of punishing the egregious assholes.
@Pie
Yeah, an the stuff I saw I know was mild compared to what’s out there. The thing I was moderating was proprietary, a closed system, and difficult to use. No way to mix it with the rest of the Internet, so all the content was made within the closed system. With something where you can import content from other places or export the content out, I’m sure it’s way worse.
This is probably true; people are usually quick to accuse others of things they are guilty of themselves, and the alt-right, neo-nazis, and white supremacists have been rather prolific in their accusations of “false-flag operations” every time one of theirs does something especially illegal and obvious….
*Possibly useful info for Brit Mammotheers*
Sorry for the O/T, but just got back from a course. Learned something I though I should share.
You’re all no doubt aware you call 999 for the emergency services. What I didn’t know (and apologies if you already did) is that if you dial 99955, the operator will put you through to the police but no-one will speak to you. They’ll just listen and run a trace on the call.
I’m sure you can envisage situations where that could be useful.
Not a chance. This is exactly what the dumpster was elected for. The 30+million who voted for him specifically and exclusively because they liked his bigotry, and the 30+million who were practicing “Synchronized Denial”, but were willing and able to excuse his bigotry.
This bigot base is going to continue to find ways to justify not condemning the nazis. These people have been practicing victim blaming their whole lives, they’re not going to stop just at the moment when they see a chance to actually destroy the people who don’t look like them.
Merck CEO dumps trump, quitting manufacturing council over dumpster’s refusal to condemn white supremacists.
It looks like “the markets” have figured out that the cheeto’s words have no relationship to any impending action.
Daily Stormer clearly not “hacked by anonymous”. Their front page looks just the same as before, with one newly posted article claiming a hack.
Source HTML of the front page has none of the usual “I hacked this” signatures, or anything indicating a real hack by an enemy of the site. Real hack would have removed much more of the site’s hate speech.
This “hacker” even left up the slur-filled excuse for the death of Heather in Charlottesville.
This is their response to being told “find a new website host” by GoDaddy.
Eugh. What a terrible weekend. I’m just glad nothing else has happened.
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one to shout out loud at the tweet that said “You’ve been calling us feminazis for years and we haven’t turned into nazis.” I had to laugh at it.
As for the discussion on their “false flag” nonsense being projection of their own guilt – I’d break it down a little more than that. I mean, yeah, Anglin’s clearly lying to try to scapegoat Anonymous for the Stormer losing its hosting (yaaay) but it doesn’t really matter what he says or how he says it. “False flag” is just the easiest. He’s just communicating to his people that it’s the fault of The Leftists, and they shouldn’t be trusted. No coordination, no planning, no intelligence required.
It’s why I roll my eyes whenever I see them talking about how they’re “outwitting” us. Their stupid chanlord operations and nazi marches are unplanned, running on the most basic flailing instincts. You know what you get when they actually start planning stuff? You get a bunch of loser MRAs asking strangers where the pet shop is, or whatever it was Roosh’s Global Worldwide Douchebag Meeting nonsense was. They aren’t planners, they aren’t masterminds. They’re hateful bigots who succeed through intimidation and violence.
That’s why social justice is achieved through planning and patience and coordination. They call themselves supermen, true alphas, the pinnacle of human achievement, but they’re so far from the truth. Humanity does best in using quiet contemplation and teamwork.
They fall apart when they’re tested. We come together.
Sorry, I’m a bit scattered today myself. Bit of a ramble. Good morning, everyone, happy Monday.
@Alan
I was led to believe the number for emergency services was 0118-999-881-999-119-7253.
Edit: @Scild
Happy monday! Here’s hoping for a better week. Today I start my new job!
