In today’s Tweet heap: Donald Trump makes the cover of Newsweek but would perhaps prefer that he hadn’t, Martin Shkreli is convicted, a man is attracted to his wife even though she isn’t skinny, and some beavers want to tell you a really funny joke.
Onward!

And yes, that’s a real cover:

I hope they surprise Shkreli and increase his sentence by 5000% overnight

A dude gets a lot of praise for publicly admitting he’s attracted to his “curvy” wife. Then twitter says, wait what?
strong contender for least fave type of male feminist is "man who thinks liking a curvy woman is revolutionary" pic.twitter.com/BzDhhiSHNA

People are applauding this man for loving his wife unconditionally like they applaud Trump when he gives a speech without insulting anyone. https://t.co/Bh7E4tGmyD

Hey David, I’m so glad to see so many posts – you must be feeling better! You just post whatever you want. I’m grateful to you for making this space.
I do find thoses posts perfectly valid. The fact it find political news not reported by french site do help me.
Twitter has always been a confusing mess to me and I stay away from it as far as possible, so I quite like these little daily collections! (I admit I sometimes lack the context to understand exactly what’s going on because I’ve been out of the loop lately, but that just means it gives me stuff to check up on.)
As for the Tripp dude – honestly, I’m sure he meant well. I want to believe that he made the post to show open support for his wife and other people on the curvy side, that there were no bad intentions involved.
It does still come off as though he’s oh so proud of being ‘not like other men’ because he has the grace to consider curvy/fat women as deserving of his boner (though I’m gonna be honest and say that his wife looks pretty damn thin to me, maybe because it takes far more than a few belly rolls for me to consider someone fat).
But I don’t wanna be too hard on him. There are lots of people out there who are far more deserving of my wrath.
@JS
A:TLA has you covered.
(Cause the text is a bit small, “You’re right, Toph, let’s go find him and give him a medal. The ‘not as much of a jerk as you could have been’ award.” followed by Zuko wearing said award)
Shkreli calls it a witch hunt? I don’t know about that… does he weigh the same as a duck?
And yet women are expected to love their spouses (men) unconditionally and not be shallow bitches who prefer men over a certain height/who have a certain hair color/etc. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Bingo. The answer is not to expand the “Socially Acceptable to Fuck, and Therefore A Worthwhile Person” box, but to get rid of it altogether.
Because all women are worthwhile. All women should be socially acceptable, not just because they bend over backwards to please some shitty checklist.
Ugh. I just can’t even with the defending this dude. Tip: just because other people are bigger dicks doesn’t mean this dude isn’t a dick. Also, I don’t give a flying fuck what his intent was, but I’m pretty sure it was self-serving; either to pat himself on the back or to promote his wife’s blog.
I couldn’t find the link, and for that I apologize, but it seems that Tripp has also posted some racist tweets in the past as well. Christ, what an asshole…
Exactly. And just because I know there are broflakes who would immediately squeal “but am I not allowed to have preferences?!?!?” I have this great desire to remind them – dear broflake, yes you can have preferences. No, that does not mean people you desire have to desire you or give a gnat’s fart for your opinion, good or bad. Don’t forget – you don’t have to get it on with anybody at all unless you want to and they happen to want to too. (unlikely though that may be in the case of the mai-boner-is-all broflake)
@kupo
Oh, I’m not trying to convince anyone else not to rip him a new one. I’d like to believe he wasn’t actively trying to be a dick, sure, but I don’t know what his intentions were and ultimately it still resulted in dickish behaviour.
No one is obligated to care about his intent or to go easy on him just because he might not be the worst the internet has to offer.
Although if Schnookums is right and Tripp has a history of being an ignorant dickbag, it stops being a one-time thing and the dude no longer gets the benefit of the doubt from me.
OT: Related to gamerbros and brogressives, Nick Robinson, a relatively prominent figure over at the games website Polygon, apparently has a history of sexually harassing women in the games industry.
Yeah, I don’t blame women for giving the side-eye to men who claim to support feminist causes.
@History Nerd
These people piss me off. I absolutely hate willful ignorance and intellectual dishonesty, and this mindset embraces both of those.
They’ll whine that paying $5000/year* in taxes to pay for healthcare** is unfair and robbery and health care should all be private so people can choose what they want. Said private insurance costing $20000/year* is perfectly acceptable because private business is supposed to make money.
*Dollar amounts are just to illustrate the point and (probably) aren’t accurate.
**Or any other public service.
If you talk about state universities or community colleges, the cost middle class people (or their parents) pay in taxes is much lower than what you’d pay to go to a private school with no scholarships. Private school scholarships are essentially a form of socialistic wealth redistribution based on your ability to pay for school, so comparing public with non-profit private doesn’t make too much sense in this case.
I think conservatives’ problems with universities tend to be more social than economic, though. I think they know their economic arguments will get torn to shreds. Schools used to have quota systems that ensured that most people attending would be white able-bodied males (yes, you did get preferential treatment if the school thought you were “healthy” without doing any medical evaluation, and that policy continued until the mid-1990’s at certain elite private schools). The popular argument now is that more diversity is psychologically harmful to special snowflake white able-bodied males and makes them do worse in their classes. So they’ve progressed to open and explicit bigotry, unless you really bend over backwards to find a “civil” way to describe what they think (no matter that they’re not “civil,” it seems).
You can think of “small government” as a euphemism for saying that default social arrangements should continue without any challenge.
Blackrising, I can count on one hand the number of times a guy declared his love of fatties without turning out to be a complete dumpster fire of person.
1. I asked a guy friend what he found physically attractive and larger women was one of the traits he listed.
2. I have a friend who tends to blurt out random things when he’s feeling especially awkward and one time “larger women are beautiful” was one of them. (He has also blured out, “my cat doesn’t sit on laps” and “I hate situps” )
Everyone else has either been creeping on me, looking for some sort of “fat chick cookie” or they were gearing up to fetishist the hell outta me.
@dslucia
Well that put a stop to my binging of Car Boys.
@Oogly:
I actually just finished watching Car Boys the other day. I was watching it more for Griffin than anything else, anyway, but yeah, it’s a pretty ugly situation, and it’s especially gross because the implication is that he was using his position as “one of the good ones” to be a slimeball behind the scenes, all while being part of one of the few gaming websites that openly tries to be inclusive. EDIT: I mean, as they all seem to do, so I guess it’s probably unnecessary to specify that.
I do appreciate the way that Polygon and the people associated with him have been handling things so far, at least.

No, but it can be a starting point for it, for fat admirers of all sexes. Of course, some FAs just flip the script and denigrate people who are “minus-sized,” which isn’t at all helpful.
@Cleverforagirl
Yeah, turns out the dude really is a flaming trash person.
I saw a couple of his and his wife’s tweets on twitter and…they both seem to be racist/transphobic assholes.
So much for what little faith in humanity I had left. *sigh*
Blackrising, whenever someone leads with, “I like fat chicks” you can usually brush them off as a trash person.
I hate ‘human interest stories’. They’re always shit. ‘Local man doesn’t despise wife for her landwhaledness’. Nobody asked him. Well, Buzzfeed asked him. But nobody asked Buzzfeed to ask him
That Uranus tweet made me laugh out loud when I read it, thank you Dave for finding it.
Shkreli will probably never serve a day. He will drag out the appeals process for years until he finds a judge stupid or venal enough to dismiss charges. If he does serve time it will be at some country club minimum security place.
Does this make you angry? On behalf of all of us who’ve been infuriated to see palpably guilty defendants walk on technicalities — GOOD. Will it make you rethink the process? Unlikely.
@Steven
Who’s this? It’s unclear…
What Axe said. Who is this directed at, Steven?
