Donald Trump, Cover Boy; Martin Shkreli, Future Prison Inhabitant: Today in Tweets

See ya, pharmabro!

By David Futrelle

In today’s Tweet heap: Donald Trump makes the cover of Newsweek but would perhaps prefer that he hadn’t, Martin Shkreli is convicted, a man is attracted to his wife even though she isn’t skinny, and some beavers want to tell you a really funny joke.

Onward!

And yes, that’s a real cover:

Pharmabro is going to jail:

A dude gets a lot of praise for publicly admitting he’s attracted to his “curvy” wife. Then twitter says, wait what?

like they applaud Trump when he gives a speech without insulting anyone.

Eh, when did that happen? Did the teleprompter break down or something?

@Alan, that was basically every cable news outlet gushing about how “Predisential” he was during the State of the Union, because he used complete sentences and didn’t directly insult anyone.

They basically hold their breath in awed reverence when he doesn’t fill his diapers, really.

There’s someone in those tweets talking about Pharmabro’s charity and research and calling people sheep. Even if that is true, it excuses absolutely nothing.

Yeah I kind of agree with the curvy wife posts. Loving your spouse unconditionally is no grounds for a medal

Someone surely has a gif for “Not Being An Asshole” Award… let me see…

Unfortunately, image-googling for “Not Being An Asshole” was fruitless, because the internet is full of assholes.

Coming out of temporary retirement to say fuck that Tripp bro so much. That’s really the worst kind of objectification, in that it allows the dude to objectify women and neg them at the same time, while also congratulating himself on totally not objectifying or negging women. What a gross fucking individual. And fuck buzzfeed for giving a platform to this garbage.

End of statement.

Ps. Thank you, Roscoe, and congratulations, Dalillama.

EDIT: Worst Tripp since Linda?

I’ll preface this by saying that impartial juries are a hugely important part of a justice system, and media circus trials can be a complication to actually getting a fair conviction

That said, I had to chuckle when I read how difficult it was to get a jury for Shkreli that wasn’t massively biased against him. Kind of brought that on himself, really.

I’ve noticed a bit of a pattern with people like Shkreli. There can be somewhat of a “fundamentalist” economically conservative outlook among some people in business, in which you assume that anything non-profit or government funded is always intrinsically worse than something produced by a for-profit business. That means, essentially, doing whatever you can to make more money will end up eventually moving the world in a positive direction.

Of course, reality tells us that nothing really works like that. Non-profit schools have always been better (on average) than for-profit schools, by almost any conceivable metric (like whether they produce good people to hire). US federal government funding more or less created the Internet and modern computers and handheld devices. I think that’s why some of those “fundamentalist” types get pushed in a conspiracy-theory-minded direction.

David, no offense, and I know you’re suffering migraines from medication withdrawal, but these ‘Today in Tweets’ posts come off as somewhat vapid to me. I can find little of value in an assortment of amusing tweets that I could have just found on Twitter anyway. Couldn’t you do some more of those ‘Resist Trump Today’ posts you used to do? I used to actually do the things you recommended in them (at least as far as was possible for an Australian), and that made me feel like I was making a difference. Without them, I haven’t been quite sure what to do with respect to #Resisting, which makes me feel as if I’m just sitting on the sidelines hoping things turn out for the best.

I hope Shkreli is put in a government owned prison for a couple of weeks and then transferred to a private for profit prison. We’ll see if he still thinks that privatization is always better.

Glad to see Shkreli getting some sort of justice.

This goes back at least as far as one of the most pernicious quotes in the original Ghostbusters — Ray Stantz’ line about how much he liked being at Columbia and how much it’s going to suck now that he and Venkman and Egon have been shitcanned:

You’ve never been out of college. You don’t know what it’s like out there. I worked in the private sector. They expect results.

@abars01:
I understand that you don’t like the Tweet posts, and I think it takes some courage to state that outright in a polite way!

That said, I, personally, enjoy them and I’m guessing I’m not the only one… if your proposal is “when you’re feeling better, please make more posts, and make some of them #resist-flavored again”, I’d be okay with that. But on most sites, I see “UGH WHY ARE THERE SO MANY POSTS ABOUT TRUMP” and on others, I see “why are there so few posts about the political climate” and I just think we have to remember that it’s up to the owner of the blog to decide what they write.

A lot of the readers here don’t use Twitter (for good reason), and this is the only way for them to catch up on that here-today-gone-tomorrow Twitter business that many of us enjoy. ^^ In short, I understand your frustration, but it’s not… entirely… about you. No offense!

FWIW I like the tweet posts. Saves me having to delve into Twitter.

I agree with you so much. Also hugs.

@Austin Loomis

The reverse can also be true. Many people in the private sector have found ways to “cheat” and cut corners, but that’s often accepted at (some) companies. Everyone knows there are people who like to party in college who do the minimum of what’s required to finish. The private sector has high standards because people in the private sector are highly educated and like challenging problems, not because they’re scamming people out of their money.

Even if, for instance, you’re a self-taught coder, you still probably benefit heavily from the non-profit educational infrastructure and public libraries. What if (GASP) the government paid you so you didn’t have to worry about loans or money while highly motivated and capable people could teach you to code better?

In general I hate it when men’s response to discussion of how there is tremendous pressure on women to conform to rigid and unrealistic beauty standards is to say they’re attracted to curvy/thick/fat women. Or women of color. Or women who wear glasses, have short hair, have tattoos, etc. Dudes, your boner is not the point of that discussion. Expanding or changing the definition of beauty does not address the issue that women’s worth is defined by our appearance. The fact that some men like “a little something to hang on to” does not stop women from starving themselves to fit into a size zero. It does not stop doctors from giving substandard medical care to fat women. It won’t stop the multi-billion dollar weight loss industry from peddling products that are dangerous at worst, useless at best and it won’t mitigate the pressure on women to waste our money on those products.

Male allies who want to help should do things like oppose discrimination against fat people. Or chastise their male friends when they say shitty things about women who don’t conform to beauty standards. Centering the conversation around boners? That’s not ally work.

I enjoy the silly posts. Twitter is exhausting, and I appreciate you finding the amusing/interesting bits so I don’t have to.

I was pretty fat as a teenager (I’m a guy, btw) and I ended up slimming down after becoming less sedentary. I think it’s possible that people might be heavier than what’s healthy for them, though lots of fat people are healthy the way they are. Still, the shaming made me feel horrible and didn’t help me become healthier, though I know people (mainly women) who’ve dealt with really serious eating disorders. It’s awful that most people don’t take bullying, discrimination, and eating disorders seriously.

I’d reject the idea that there’s some essentialist evo psych sexual preference programmed into men for thin bodies, long hair, etc. But what your own personal sexual preferences are don’t give you demerits or brownie points on the social justice issues.

I don’t really use Twitter, so I like these Tweet-mix posts. I actually have been needing to skip some of the Tweets in the “normal” posts lately because somehow even when misogynists are always constantly repeating the exact same things, they manage to one-up each other on how horribly they can phrase them.
