A female Marvel comics editor posts a milkshake selfie — and fanbabies throw a fit

The Milkshake Menace

By David Futrelle

Like the titular character in The Princess and the Pea, the members of the Great Internet Lady Hating Machine have developed a truly impressive sensitivity towards the slightest perceived discomfort. And so it shouldn’t really come as that much of a surprise that a small army of perpetually outraged comics fanbabies are currently losing their collective shit over a milkshake selfie.

On Friday, Heather Antos‏, a Marvel comic editor who just happens to be a woman, tweeted a selfie featuring her and a bunch of her female co-workers enjoying some delicious beverages together. “It’s the Marvel milkshake crew!” she announced to her Twitter followers.

She was immediately swarmed by a squadron of fanbabies furious that such “fake geek girls” had made their way into Marvel’s inner sanctum.

https://twitter.com/DiversityAndCmx/status/891978745715843072

According to Antos, the private messages she got in response to her tweet were considerably less polite. “[T]he internet is an awful, horrible, and disgusting place,” she wrote, noting that she woke up Sunday, two days after she posted the selfie,

to a slew of more garbage tweets and DMs. For being a woman. In comics. Who posted a selfie of her friends getting milkshakes.

And yes, the fanbabies are still going at it today. For many of Antos’ “critics,” the selfie proved a perfect excuse to rant about Marvel’s alleged “anti-white, anti-men agenda.”

https://twitter.com/MonsieurBallin/status/891666775015694336

https://twitter.com/Red_Vanguard/status/891918378352472064

One fellow wrote out a mini-manifesto explaining how the eeeevil SJWs were destroying comics.

https://twitter.com/W00dlee/status/891874744802398208

The critics filled their angry tweets with an assortment of buzzwords that will be instantly familiar to anyone who followed GamerGate.

https://twitter.com/DiversityAndCmx/status/891875572741230592

https://twitter.com/CanuckCon/status/891822485305516038

https://twitter.com/darling_kun/status/891850198552653824

Not that the fanbabies didn’t have their own “narrative” to promote. One of the central tenets: that so-called SJWs only pretend to like comics.

https://twitter.com/thebechtloff/status/891705124405604357

https://twitter.com/DiversityAndCmx/status/891674600475676673

Some saw the all-female selfie as a threat not only to men but to … white people in general, predicting an imminent White Genocide of Marvel characters.

https://twitter.com/thebechtloff/status/891515050502107136

It didn’t take long for things to get creepy.

https://twitter.com/thebechtloff/status/891503206282522624

Naturally, the reactionary fanboys turned on those who offered solidarity to the Milkshake Crew.

https://twitter.com/johndavidson83/status/891799233275322368

https://twitter.com/Daddy_Warpig/status/891857865140445184

And others tried to dismiss the whole thing as fake:

https://twitter.com/DoctorDooomile/status/891683546246643712

https://twitter.com/DiversityAndCmx/status/891985792591122432

https://twitter.com/laughingdrag/status/891834215377096709

https://twitter.com/DiversityAndCmx/status/891984421519314944

https://twitter.com/Stmpy_Mch/status/891916686953136128

Happily, at this point the “virtue-signalers” are winning. A wide assortment of non-reactionary comics artists, sellers and fans, female and male, have been showing their solidarity with the Marvel Milkshake Crew, filling the #MakeMineMilkshake hashtag with tweets like these:

“Unfathomably convoluted X-Men storyline”

How long has this boy been a Marvel fanboy? When has X-Men NOT been extremely convoluted?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, anyone who uses the phrase “SJW” without irony or sarcasm is just a bigot.

For the life of me, I can’t imagine my interest in comic books ever being threatened by something as banal as a woman drinking milkshakes.

How fragile is their love of comics when it’s threatened by milky beverages and X chromosomes?

This is the same Marvel who hired Nick Spencer, a man with no comic experience, to turn Captain America into a Nazi.

So in short, fuck these fucking fake geek guys.

Comics themselves were irrelevant, SJWs wanted another notch on their bedpost of Moral Victories. It was never about content, just control

Projection, I say
I say again: Projection
This is what you want

4 – I’m pretending Marvel Comics are racist against white heterosexual men, despite that being both untrue and impossible

Truly, it is so
It is why Marvel’s true tale
Is nazi glory

Seriously. They are literally writing in their comics that the Nazis won the second world war, and it took a special artifact to change that. In essence, that as far as Marvel is concerned, the Nazis should have won that war. And still we have people saying Marvel is “racist” against white men.

8 – Waah! Women in comics aren’t drawn solely for me to imagine applying indignities too! This is the worst thing that could ever happen to anyone! Waaaahhhhh!

Fictional, or real

Hang on, are these bozos complaining that X-Men might become a vehicle to highlight prejudice and oppression?

Well heaven forfend that should ever happen.

The oddest thing is that the editor posting the selfie isn’t even on the “controversial” books. She is on the Deadpool / Star Wars side of things mostly as assistant editor, and her main book (that she is main editor for) is Gwenpool. What has she has to do with anything these people blabber about?! O.o

I wonder if these men vow to throw away any books, mangas or comics when they find out a woman created them?

When has X-Men NOT been extremely convoluted?

I was getting confused by Marvel before it was trendy!

Seriously, I didn’t have a clue what was going in the 70s; and back then there was just the one version of everyone.

weirwoodtreehugger: chief manatee

I’m not even into reading comics and I know that superheros typically fight villains that are authoritarian and oppressive and often very wealthy. I call fake geek boy on the “fans” who think that classic superhero stories were merely escapist power fantasies where manly male heroes punch and kill things just to display their totally awesome superpowers.

“There’s social justice in comics now! waaaaaaaaaaaa!”

Holy hoppin’ hitlers you guyse! Comics have been about social justice since forever, you dimwits! Learn to read theme and actually dig into what a story is about!

I seriously think they engage with comics on an eight year old level. They’re about Captain PunchFist and the Skullkicker Crew, fist-punchin’ and skull-kickin’ bad guys, and any deeper interpretation is just librul ivory tower faff.

I mean jees, guys! come on!

Once again, aren’t you people exhausted? Like being an adult is a lot of work – you have to get up and deal with the world?

This is a random person you barely know, posting a photo with some friends…and you spend the entire weekend frothing? It was nice out this weekend. I got to take my puppy to the park. Just go out and breathe?

(Note. I know it is physically impossible for many of these men to stop and holy hell are they vile, but sometimes just listening to them get all atwitter make me exhausted for them).

I just can’t. I mean first, she works on what they consider to be holy ground while they read comics, have the meanings of most fly right over their heads and then loudly complain.

Some days I just can’t with these reactionary children.

I’m sure a lot of readers here are in the same boat or know someone who is — been playing video games and reading comics since before most of these people were born or could read, but of course, I’m a “fake geek girl” invading a male space. I obsessively collected and read Gen13, for example, because it had a female editor and that inspired me. I remember when they made Sarah Rainmaker a lesbian and shitlords wrote in to the editor’s page screaming about it, but most people were like “get over it, hoss”. If they’d had the internet…

Fuuuuuck. Theeeeese. Jeeeeeeerks.

In my teens (late 90s), anime/video games/comics were all shared in my circles, and everyone seemed to feel welcome. The a-holes kept to themselves; I would never have become a voice actress if things were the way they are now. (I won’t be sharing my identity here, obvs.)

Will they ever hush up? Feels like it’s just getting worse.

Also, laughing at the idea that the X-Men, just recently, started being extremely convoluted.

Remember when comics were about superheroes and not a safe space for feminists to create female characters

No, because I was born quite some time after 1941.

Our Towns reveals the true identity of Wonder Woman’s real Mom. She is Elizabeth Holloway Marston. She’s not 1,000; she’s 99 come Thursday. One dark night as the clouds of war hovered over Europe again, Mr. Marston consulted his wife and collaborator, also a psychologist. He was inventing somebody like that new Superman fellow, only his character would promote a global psychic revolution by forsaking Biff! Bam! and Ka-Runch! for The Power of Love. Well, said Mrs. Marston, who was born liberated, this super-hero had better be a woman. Wonder Woman was created and written in the Marstons’ suburban study as a crusading Boston career woman disguised as Diana Prince. Meanwhile, in a small Connecticut town, Wonder Woman’s Mom has disguised herself as a retired editor who lives in postwar housing.
