By David Futrelle

BAM! Two more Republicans have announced they’ll be voting no on moving forward on Trumpcare, for a total of four. So it looks like the bill is DONE.

DISCUSS! Celebrate! No trolls,  Trump fans allowed!

UPDATE: McConnell is now pushing REPEAL ONLY. Seems like a desperate move, but we need to keep calling and protesting!

@WWTG

I wonder if it will finally cause police shootings to be taken seriously

Nah, they’re just blaming it on him being muslim and/or a diversity hire. No systematic problem here, No siree.

@WWTH, I’m exactly the same. I feel super uncomfortable around police, and my cousin’s a mountie. And I’m in Canada. I’m pretty sure I’d never leave my house if I lived in the States :C I really hope things improve down there soon.

@ weirwoodtreehugger

I don’t say it often because I don’t want to come off all what about the white people, but I always feel uncomfortable when cops are near. Even knowing that I’m of a demographic that’s the most unlikely to be targeted for police violence (white cishet and mainstream middle class looking), it just felt like the more we militarize police forces and the more we fail to hold them accountable when they hurt or kill civilians, the more likely that they wouldn’t be satisfied only targeted marginalized populations. It doesn’t feel particularly good to be right.

Ditto. I have even less to worry about (white cishet middle-class-adjacent, plus male), but that was something else in all the statistics about police being largely immune to prosecution – it’s mostly, not only, crimes against marginalized peoples. They could still gun me down and get off scott-free. It’s an extra layer of personal fear.

Still nothing compared to the rage that they’re already doing so against my neighbors, but just an extra coal on the fire.

Did we already talk about US HB2796 ?

It’s a pretty horrific bill with support from both parties. It is based on some flawed ideas that sex is an exact reflection of DNA & that DNA data is government property & that sex and gender are interchangeable. It is definitely a thing we should all be calling our reps to oppose.

@Scildfreja: And then you read about all the institutional sexism and bullying in the RCMP, and the racism and homophobia at CSIS

Ugh….

(links provided for anyone who isn’t familiar with these Canadian problems, not specifically for you Scildfreja.)

@WWTH: That is awful, and my heart goes out to her family and friends and community. I worry that you are right though, that suddenly something will happen now that a white woman has been killed.

It’s like… It would be good if something happens, but if it happens in such a way that helps white people more than PoC… Which is probably what is going to happen. Ugh.

@OP: Reading that nearly all the no’s were because the bill wasn’t mean enough is really discouraging.

I also hope people start writing really elaborate situations where the senator for Alaska is the only one who could possibly profit and just give them to her. We see what happened, there.

Ugh, I know, right? Not that I could talk about anything like that with the family. They’ve gotten very “The police in the states are turning into a gang of thugs, but the RCMP is perfect how dare you say anything bad about them”. It’s so disheartening :C

And I’m all “But the musical ride! And Due South!”

But then I read about all of the allegations and it makes me sad for the people who were trying to help other people, and ran foul of a horrible place to work.

@dikdik: Holy shit that bill! That looks awful!! I’m not seeing where it talks about DNA data being government property though. If you have a link, would you mind sharing it?

mildlymagnificent: Both my mother and I have been trying to get my husband to try the cherry thing for years, especially now that he can’t have NSAIDs (he had a heart attack a couple years back and is on daily aspirin). I’m not saying he’s stubborn, but, as my mother has said about my own father, he is Never Wrong.

And I’m all “But the musical ride! And Due South!”

I mean, if they just wanted to be an equestrian group, I imagine no one would have any problem with them!

(Am I the only one who is totally into dressage? Charlotte Dujardin blows my mind.)

I lived near Stockwell station in 2005. My opinion of the Metropolitan Police, and more broadly all armed police forces, is not a secret.

I’m very fortunate that, as an able-bodied white cishet man who has no enemies, I’ve never had to choose between my personal safety at the hands of non-uniformed killers and at the hands of uniformed killers. I acknowledge my privilege.

Oh, wonderful, in addition to their over 2 hour long official meeting. Trump and Putin met secretly for an hour at the G-20 summit with no one else but Putin’s translator in the room.

While this looking awful for Trump is nice, I’m horrified at how dumb the President is. So much power in such tiny incompetent hands.

To validate the failure of both Replace and Repeal (i.e. demonstrate that, actually, no, most people liked Obamacare, didn’t want it to be repealed, and are happy that it isn’t going to be), the #Resistance might want to host a few celebratory rallies.

PaganReader - Misandrist Spinster

Hey, Moran is one of my senators. Does that mean I have to vote for him next time around?

@Joekstar: I don’t think you need to go so far as to vote for him, but send him an email thanking him for protecting the interests of his constituents. Reward them when they do…can’t say well, let’s go with not terribly.

What Tosca said. Email him to say something along the lines of “Thank you for doing right by your constituents. Now keep it up.” And keep contacting him about your opinions on stuff.

Make sure you specify why you’re happy he voted no, he was one who wanted it to be more harsh.

As a leading conservative, Mr. Lee was always skeptical that the bill didn’t go far enough in repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act, though Mr. Moran emerged as a surprising opponent.

The Kansan said he still wants to scrap Obamacare but that he couldn’t support the bill because it neither repeals the 2010 law nor addresses health care’s rising costs.

“We should not put our stamp of approval on bad policy,” he said. “Furthermore, if we leave the federal government in control of everyday health care decisions, it is more likely that our health care system will devolve into a single-payer system, which would require a massive federal spending increase. We must now start fresh with an open legislative process to develop innovative solutions that provide greater personal choice, protections for pre-existing conditions, increased access and lower overall costs for Kansans.”

-source

Seriously though, why no single-payer? Works better than what the US currently has up here, in Canada… (Not saying it’s perfect, just way less expensive for people who need care.)

ETA: I can’t contact anyone unfortunately, dikdik, since I’m not from the US. But I’ll share how terrible that bill is on my FB feed, which is about as much signal boosting as I can do…

@ abars01

the #Resistance might want to host a few celebratory rallies.

I doubt I’ll find anything to party about until there’s Democratic majorities in both houses and a Democrat in the White House.

Maybe some moments of quiet celebration, and treating ourselves to something beyond the regular self-care, but anything beyond that feels too much like setting ourselves up to an 11/9 moment.

Insurance Industry making tons of cash, the lobbies and politicians that keep pushing propoganda that Single Payer Healthcare is the devil and too expensive but murdering children in another country for kicks is just a okay.

Seriously though, why no single-payer?

Cos women and browns would be helped by it, so white men won’t allow it. Also cos a woman and a brown pushed in that direction, so coffin nailed

propoganda that Single Payer Healthcare is the devil and too expensive

Personally I believe that’s just a cover story. The actual reason is that they are: a)bought and paid for and b)self-centered spiteful little bastards that don’t want even one cent of their money going to help anyone else.

Ooglyboggles

@Jesalin
Yeah I see it as the cover story too, that’s why I said that they keep pushing the narrative that single payer is the death knell of the nation. That way they can get people who you’d think know better parroting bs like “we can’t afford single player we’re too big. Now the Drug War, that’s something worth our time.”
@Axecalibur: Middle Name Danger
And the best part about it is the fact that despite this country leading in the biotech industry, it’s also the worst in caring for the health of its people. The irony is rich.
