Hopefully when it comes to most of them, its a sign of their extreme ignorance about what relationships are actually like. I hope that people like Tec63298 don’t have a lot of children, only because I don’t want them to have access to young impressionable minds that they can mold. They may have a slight point…. only in that yesterday evening, in our current heatwave, I found myself on my knees fanning one of the cats with a tea towel, and realised I was essentially that guy you see in movies, making sure the Pharoah is kept nice and cool. This was while the other cat was snuggling down onto some wrapped bottles of ice, and the third was sitting in front of an electric fan that I can’t help noticing I wasn’t sitting in front of myself.

We’re still 17 cats off being ‘normal’, though.

I’m a little surprised that both of you are suspicious of white people you see everyday, Don’t you both live in NYC?(Well I know Fran is in Long Island but I thought Long Island was very similar to NYC. Fran please correct me if I’m wrong.) And Axe, didn’t you just list a bunch of neighborhoods in NYC in a very recent comment? I assumed that meant you live here, but you should also please correct me if I’m wrong.

Yes, the numbers for white people voting for Trump across the country were something like 65% for men and 53% for women but Hillary Clinton won over 90% of the vote in NYC. I honestly don’t know one person in NYC of any race or religion who voted for Trump. I know of 1 or 2, but it’s less than one in ten total and women and people of color hate him even more. But in specifically NYC, it seems most white people did their part in this election. If only they could always(or even usually)do their part in everything important besides the election, NYC would be a wonderful place. As of now NYC is genuinely awesome but it’s also genuinely shitty in a bunch of ways

Also, about the segregation of America. NYC is one of the most mixed up cities in the whole world. There are people from almost 200 countries living here speaking notably more than 100 languages. I know that’s not even close to the norm in this country but it proves it’s completely possible and to me proves it is a good thing.

In my experience many people who come here at a young age, say for college, do tend to come from much more segregated areas of the country that have white neighborhoods and black neighborhoods, etc. But when they come to NYU and meet people from literally dozens of other countries in their classes for the first time, most of them seem to realize “wow these are people, just like me”. Even some who start out prejudiced.(of course there are outliers though)

Now of course I’m not trying to claim New York is some wonderful utopia lacking in racism. I’ve had to deal with tons of systemic racism bullshit and even slurs(Oreo is the one I hear most often, it means black on the outside, white on the inside. But I’ve been called a half-breed and even a ni–er although that last one’s become much more common recently)and other forms of direct racism periodically over the course of my life, but that has increased absurdly in the last 6 months(I may have been called more slurs in the last six months than I had in the 32 years before that and it seemed incredibly rare in high school and college, to me at least. It’s gotten progressively worse since college IMO, and now we’ve gotten to this absurd point)

Lastly and most important by far is the NYPD. I think they are definitely the most racist institution in the city and that’s saying a lot because almost all American institutions are racist in some way or another( I’m talking about institutions run by the federal state or city governments) but the NYPD are so openly racist and seemingly bloodthirsty it actually terrifies me.(some of my calmer friends agree with the openly racist part, but tell me “they seem bloodthirsty” is a bit much and I’m being melodramatic. They may be right, cause I can be melodramatic and not realize it. Does anyone else have an opinion on the bloodthirstiness of the NYPD, cuz I’d be curious to hear it.)

That’s the only incredibly openly racist group I had noticed in this city until recently. Again, anyone please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, especially Fran and Axe, but also anyone else. Especially people who live in NYC or are NYC adjacent(Yonkers, Westchester, etc.)

I was only in america twice in my life – so maybe i make judgement wrongly. It was only Philadelphia and charleston. I just observed in charleston how lashing gangs came and one group of three or four will go forward on the bay and that group will be white and then one other group will go aft and that group will be black. In panama they send what they call ‘panama crew’ where 20 people come to your vessel to help put wires for locomotives on the locks. And this group also mix like black and white and maybe also latin. And they all laughing joking together without separating. And in cartagena i observe similar.

But like i say, my experience of other countries very limit. Just usually to port workers – stevedores or agents. But all countries we calling on this route have big history of racism and empire. Australia & new zealand, south america and USA. So i just observing. But maybe also because i reading more about american racism i just imagining more or look more close on this.

Yeah, seriously Utah? Of all places? That’s fucking absurd! The state has one of the highest percentages of white people in the country! I think it’s in the top 5.
