Injustice System Open Thread

Philando Castile and his mother Valerie

In the wake of the outrageous if not exactly surprising acquittal of a police officer for the murder of Philando Castile and the mistrial in the Bill Cosby rape case here’s an open thread in which to discuss and vent. No trolls, MRAs, Trump fans.

Horrible news, and as you said, horribly unsurprising.
This article is also sad, but well worth reading especially in its discussion of victim blaming and toxic masculinity, from the surviving children of a domestic abuser and murderer. “We didn’t recognise that he was dangerous’: our father killed our mother and sister”
https://www.theguardian.com/society/2017/jun/17/we-didnt-recognise-that-he-was-dangerous-our-father-killed-our-mother-and-sister?
The hopeful thing about it is what amazing men the sons turned out to be, despite growing up in an MRA fantasy of the ideal family life.

I’m too worn down and tired to even deal with this now. I have no confidence in the justice system. I have no confidence that white people who worship any form of authority, will ever stop kissing it’s ass long enough, to think hard and long about the evils they’ve perpetrated.

This country, and its people, are just horribly, horribly wrong, and I can’t deal with this shit right now.

Thanks for sharing that. It was just…wow.

Buffalo Headroom (it doesn't have to make sense)

I keep wanting to be optimistic about things…but shit like this is the reason I’m pessimistic about the human race. I have a deep feeling in my gut that we probably won’t get better.

Honestly, this doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. Power structures like the courts will almost always support those with more power (or wealth, depending) rather than trying to obtain a just outcome. This makes the few times justice is actually served all the more impressive, ultimately. I just wish that it weren’t the case.

The outcome of both trials didn’t suprise me, exactly, but the Philando Castile trial deeply, deeply angered me.

I guess I can go into a full-scale analysis about this, but I’m with Ikeke. I’m just extremely exhausted by it all.

Enough.

I’m so sad I don’t know what to say. I still remember Castile’s girlfriend’s (Diamond was her name?) cries in her livestream video. She makes me weep deeply, in despair.

Neither of these outcomes have surprised. Like Peevee said, they angered me, but no surprise.

On another note, more related to the Bill Cosby case and cases of famous people in general, I get so tired of people blaming the victims of these people for “betraying” us. If anyone as betrayed us, it’s Bill Cosby/Jimmy Saville/Jimmy Page/Mike Tyson, etc. I know you all understand this, it just makes me so mad. Such blatant victim blaming!!

lkeke and PeeVee – Take care of yourselves; pull some hugs from the barrel and look at some kitties on the internets.

I’m also angry, disappointed, and all the other things about this and the other police murdering people of color trials.

Then I saw Makroth’s link and I’m just: Fuck.

Hey, other white people? THIS IS WHY WE CAN’T HAVE NICE THINGS!!!! You know? Like Justice.

Well, crap. I was really hoping for a glimmer of good news there, but apparently not. I’m just going to fall back on this again:

The entire penal system needs to be bulldozed and started over from scratch, frankly. The original purpose of the police amounted to suppressing unrest among the lower classes, and the U.S., the additional duty of slave-catching was added.

I’m not surprised about what happened with the Castile case, and that is why I usually expect to die whenever I go outside. There is a very good reason why I live under the assumption that I am on borrowed time.

It is a warzone. Being black in the U.S. is extremely dangerous.

I try to be optimistic about things too, but it’s hard. The only (very small) positive I can see in the Cosby case is that at least the prosecutor’s office was able to go to trial in the first place-there are so many rape cases in the US and around the world where there isn’t enough evidence to even bother prosecuting. Part of me can’t help hoping that if Cosby could be brought to trial, maybe someday we as a society will be able to actually convict a powerful rapist.

And it just seems to be getting worse and worse. I mean, what the fuck is this shit? How is that a thing that happens now?

As is often the case these days, the only things I have to say in reaction run afoul of the comments policy.

I’m with Dali on the bulldozing thing though.

(computer troubles again, so I’m making myself rare anyway, I guess)

Color me unsurprised at the verdict. And color me unsurprised by the NRA’s response. Fuck this country.
