I’m afraid I have to disagree with you there. The guys put themselves in harm’s way, but I don’t think that’s irresponsible. On the contrary I find it very admirable.
Let’s rewind a bit. Someone was abusing some young girls. Now no disrespect to our many talented young people on this site, but they’re just kids. And what he actually said was that all Muslims should be killed. One of the girls is a Muslim. Can you imagine how terrifying that must have been?
So some decent guys decided, correctly in my opinion, that this was unacceptable and attempted to assist in preventing any further harm to the girls. As we discussed before, sometimes a woman intervening can de-escalate a situation. But the perp in this case was demonstrating that he was happy to threaten women/girls. He displayed all the signs of snivelling cowardice so it was perhaps correct to believe he might back down in the face of some other guys.
That tragically wasn’t the case.
But I’ve not seen anyone, and especially any women, suggest that there’s a duty on men, and only men, to always risk themselves to assist women and only women
So I think your thesis isn’t backed up by evidence. But I’m more than happy to consider any specific challenges you may have to my analysis. So feel free to correct me if, and where, you can show I’m incorrect.
Catcalling is harassment because the catcaller is imposing unwanted contact on the victim. The only person who has power to make the interaction stop is the catcaller (or an outside authority literally hauling the harasser away). The victim cannot shut their ears off or force the catcaller to go away. To avoid getting catcalled, women’s only option is to basically never set foot in public again.
Catcalling is also an unambiguous action–one person shouts at another. It’s something that *happens*, that one person concretely does to another. There’s no inference of motive necessary.
“Gaze harvesting” is not harassment because a) it’s not a real thing, and b) if it *were* a real thing, the so-called “victim” 100% has the power to stop his gaze from being harvested. He just has to not stare. That’s it. He can go anywhere in public he likes with any number of staggeringly beautiful women present, and his own self-control is the only thing he needs to be perfectly safe.
“Gaze harvesting” is not an unambiguous action; a woman is simply existing and visible. She does not *do* anything to the man, nor does she force him to do anything. The very concept of “gaze harvesting” is 100% based on making a guess at the woman’s motive, regardless of anything she actually says or does.
And to the more recent post: Those girls (kids, minors, non-adults), did not “use” the men who stood up for them. One man took his own initiative to scream at a couple of teenagers who were minding their own business, and other men took their own initiative to try and get him to knock it off. It is baseless and unfair to say that either of those actions are in any way a result of being “used”. Adult men made their own choices and it was in no way the fault of underaged girls.
