I think I understand how you feel. I’m a black non hetero female whose favorite pastime is reading and I like to believe I’m a halfway decent writer. But whenever I leave NYC( I have friends who went to college in other states and stayed there)sometimes I almost feel like a non-person. I went to NYU but ended up dropping out because of personal/mental issues, so I have almost three years of college but no degree. If you care for my opinion, I find you incredibly intelligent and entertaining. Like I said before, I’ve been lurking for years and you are one of my very favorite newish commenters.(and you reminded me of hotep’s and made me laugh. I had forgotten they existed)

It seems like nowadays(at least to me)being intelligent is not valued by a large part of American society. Sometimes it actually seems frowned upon, especially if you’re a woman(or black or in our cases both) I’ve had many people call me elitist and pretentious just for saying I enjoy books more than TV(especially when I say I prefer the Game of Thrones books to the TV show)So know that you’re awesome and just keep doing you. I didn’t know about that because I didn’t watch that show, but the moment he lost was when he expressed a similar sentiment on Real Time.

Bill Maher (along with oh, so many other white male atheists) is what really makes it difficult for me to identify as an atheist.

I see this sentiment a lot among progressives and I really don’t get it. All the word ‘atheist’ entails is not believing in supernatural entities. I think giving the word to the overprivileged asshole types of atheists who are ime, a vocal minority, not even close to a majority is just conceding that they’re right in their attempts to bully people out of atheist spaces for being something other than a cishet white neurotypical male. They said atheism is supposed to be a safe space for privileged white men. The fuck if I’m gonna concede that.

I also think it fuels some tendencies I see in progressive spaces to bully atheists and use the Dawkins/Harris/Maher fanboy types as a justification. I’ve seen a lot of silencing of progressive atheists. I’ve also seen a lot of denial in progressive spaces that religiosity is privileged and that oppression targeted towards atheists is a thing that happens. For example, I read a story about a woman who lost custody of her kids because she wasn’t taking them to church. There are still school districts in the US that disallow atheist student clubs or push prayer even though those things are illegal. People can still be ostracized from their communities for being openly atheist. Lots of people don’t face any oppression for being non-theist, but those who do deserve to be stood up for the same as any other victim of marginalization and when progressives act as though ‘atheist’ is a dirty word, that really makes it more difficult.

Sorry if it sounds like I’m attacking you, not my intent and I’m not mad at you. It’s just an issue I’m opinionated about so I went off on a rant.

Reports are coming in of what sounds horribly like a terrorist attack in London.
A van mounted the pavement and ploughed into pedestrians on London Bridge. Shots have been heard (probably from the police) at Borough market and people have been stabbed.

People are on Twitter offering tea, shelter and beds/sofas.
