Memorial Day 2017 Open Thread

An open thread for Memorial Day. A day for Americans to remember those who have given their lives for their country.

And a day for a man who’s never sacrificed anything in his life to make a buffoon of himself at Arlington National Cemetery.

Axe,

Which is why I brought it up

Oh. I thought you only brought it up because so saw people selling them, as you made no mention of the photo in your original post.

Yeah, the tradition has been around for a long time, lol. It’s been such a staple in my area for so long, I suppose I don’t really have a strong feeling about it one way or another. ?

Fresh ginger is grate…d… Old wrinkly ginger my mom tried using in a stir-fry recipe… not so. I’m still working on convincing her that wrinkled, but not “bad”, bell peppers really don’t need to be used for anything other than compost.

Also, I prefer the “heavy object” method of “grating” ginger. Just hit it a few times with a mallet, maybe fold it over and mallet again, then chop fine. You can remove the skin before if you must. Most of the time a good fine chop will do as well as grating it.

Whoops, double post, sorry

@PeeVee,

Ta for that link. I knew the poem that originally inspired the poppies but wasn’t aware that the tradition of wearing them was started in the US! Weird that now it’s apparently a bigger thing in UK, NZ, Aust & Canada.

(I am hogging this thread. Am dizzy with relief at having a little break. Must. Stop. Posting)

@PeeVee
The USO folks got me thinking about it, the OP pic got me to ask about it here. I was unclear tho. Sorry 🙂

I knew I’d get in trouble with this crowd if I used that word. Ach du Lieber!

Thanks for the amusing link.

OMFG, no, I can’t even… Why are we celebrating a holiday that glorifies imperialist violence in the name of defending white male capitalist hegemony? Like, could you all just not? This is the height of white privilege, that we are glorifying and commemorating the deaths of people (mostly white, male republicans from rural areas) who fought/are fighting to preserve western hegemony, but there are unnamed, completely innocent black men and women being mangled by the cops EVERY SINGLE DAY, and no one, least of all the armed forces or the government, even wish to acknowledge this. Fuck this.

It’s all good.

All this garlic talk makes me think about garlic bread. ?
I don’t know if you guys ever tried it but I like to boil garlic and use it to make garlic paste. I mash it until it turns into a puree, add olive oil, salt, parsley, spread the mixture on bread slices and roast them. I sometimes add cheese too. Tastes like heaven.

A little garlic tip from Spain:
If you’re using raw garlic and you don’t want the hot taste, remove the little growing shoot in the centre. Not worth it if the garlic will be cooked.

Speaking of poppies, I spent most of the last episode of Blackadder wondering how they were going to make certain death funny. I never expected this.

Is it off-topic if it’s an open thread?

I just watched the Wanted arc of Steven Universe online, and am blown away with new revelations and questions!

[SPOILERS]

I could do nothing but gape when the Miss Grundy gem (Zircon) revealed that Rose Quartz may have been framed. It sounds like there was a conspiracy among the Diamond Authority, and a possible civil war may be at stake.

Everything happened so fast up to and including a lasting consequence for Steven’s actions.

@Oogly

So much to take in. Strong hints at Lion’s origin. How long before Lars reappears, if he reappears? Will White Diamond ever show up?

@BritterSweet
White Diamond by narrative structure has to appear by the climax of this series. The show had made parallels of the Diamonds grieving over the loss of Pink Diamond with the Crystal Gems grieving over the loss of Rose Quartz. Pearl with Blue Diamond and Garnet with Yellow Diamond seem to have similar ways of coping with loss. It would be interesting if the show pulled a Wizard of Oz and have White diamond be like Amethyst and be a complete and utter hedonist when everything on homeworld portrays her as this unspoken being of authority and power.

@valentine: elephant garlic! Someday I’d like to plant a clove of that.

My job search is not going amazing, but it’s only… 3 weeks in. I’m going to go to every software engineering Meetup in this entire state.

Garlic and ginger are both vital essential crucial staples. (ooohhhh garlic mashed potatoes with fresh roasted (or lightly deep-fried) whole cloves very finely chopped and mashed into it … swoon). Mayonnaise comes from Mahón, Menorca (as per the name).

White poppies, for when you want to acknowledge the day but without any appearance of supporting jingoism. They’re probably pretty controversial here even now – are they a thing in other countries much?

Mish, those photos are wonderful!

@KL, you are hilarious. Also, you appear to live inside your head. The things you claim to hear are coming from inside you (you should probably get out more).

Nikki:

If I end up having to dispose of it, I’d like to donate it and its backstory (how my great-uncle fought the Nazis and captured it) to a museum. Is this the right thing to do?

Maybe contact your great-uncle’s regiment? They might be interested.

I am from the UK and for a few years my mother would wear a red one AND a white one. I have never heard a pacifist arguing against honouring the dead, just against honouring war.

I quit mayonnaise and coincidentally lost a lot of weight but I will always have a soft spot in my stomach for it. I have one small jar of garlic mayonnaise on my birthday which I consume lavishly without reserve on everything savory until it is gone. The garlic makes it extra special.

I think the most white people food ever is lutefisk, as served on my family’s Christmas dinner:

Boiled potatoes, boiled white fish and thick white sauce, seasoned with salt and ground allspice. I actually like this, while others take it more as a tradition for tradition’s sake.

Come to think of it, I could try adding the plate with some whitefish sashimi and sauerkraut, for more pale blandness. I used to enjoy garlic sauerkraut, but nowadays I much prefer regular sauerkraut, even though I still like garlic in many other foods.

Adding to the garlic discussion here. This has become one of my favorite diabetic recipes for chicken. Garlic, curry powder, AND ginger. Yes, please!

@Artic

Lutefisk is good, but Icelandic Hakarl, which is basking shark flesh pickled in its own juices and left to dry, is even better as an example of White People Food.

comment image

It comes from Iceland and is served at a feast called the Þorramatur, which is held during a holiday meant to honor the god Thor; this holiday is called the Þorrablót.

For Asatruar like myself, blot are our equivalent to sabbat festivals for Wiccans. I know some specifics about Icelandic culture because they are the primary practitioners of Asatru, or, as they call it, Forn Sed – the worship of the old Norse gods.

Therefore, I have studied Icelandic cuisine to an extent and it is the most white you can get, which makes me very happy indeed.

If you guys gave me a small loan of a million dollars, I would move to Iceland and build a small castle, paint it blue, and call myself an Ice Princess and wear fabulous regal blue dresses all day while exclusively serving Icelandic food.

I want to break all the cultural boundaries. They say we black people don’t like cold weather, Spartan food, or the sea: Iceland has all of these. I desire to live there. It would be perfect.

Anyway.

Hakarl goes best with Brennivin, an Icelandic spirit nicknamed Black Death.

Hakarl has a strong urine flavor because of the ammonia it’s steeped in. Basking sharks basically urinate through their flesh; I don’t know the specifics because I am not a marine biologist.

It is advised that you not inhale through your nose while eating it.

More Icelandic food:

Svid- boiled sheep head with potato and turnips.
comment image

Literally just some meat and fucking potatoes. Eat it with your face jaws.

It looks back at you while you eat.
comment image

The sheep head is judging you, like the eatable beast in Douglas Adams’s “Restaurant at The End of the Universe”.

Liver sausage.

I actually like liver. It’s one of my favorite foods.
comment image

So, yes.

If you gave me a million dollars I would relocate to a fantasy style castle in Iceland, where it is exclusively freezing and damp and near the ocean, and I would invite you all to supper, andwe shall eat boiled sheep’s eyes and potatoes and drink Black Death and then make praises to Thor and Odin and Freya and so on.

It’s either that or Oop North in England for me. I hear the English Boiled beef entrees are quite good and relatively mild in flavor, which suits my tastes perfectly.

Icelandic snack food:

Harðfiskur, dried fish.

comment image

You eat it as it is.

Condiments? A little butter, if you are feeling extra sumptuous. Otherwise, chew on that bare salted dried fish.
